My dad when he became a detective in 1969 bought a Colt Detective Special. Carried it until 1989 when he retired. I carried the same Colt when I became a Sherrifs Deputy in 1995 as a backup gun. I was a uniformed officer until I retired last year...my EDC is the same Colt.
The power vs capacity ratio of the .357 Sig is superior to all other semi-auto calibers. And although .357 Magnum comes in slightly hotter loads, you get 8 round capacity at best.
@dkaob8351 I'm pretty sure 10mm can edge out 357 sig, and it's the same diameter, so same round count. The problem is that it's longer, so it needs a bigger frame.
Here in the UK we have very limited edc, but I carry an old Swiss army penknife, for boxes, envelopes, screws and bottle tops. My Yorkshire Tyke attitude would be my most offensive security. Love the channel, especially the black powder vlogs, as I own a Uberti Rem new model navy and the holster item was brilliant. I hope your health keeps improving. You're looking better every film. Thanks. Subscribed at last.
It's would be interesting to do deep dive into the differences between the USA and the UK regarding the history, mentality, and social views of the use of firearms for self defense. My mom's ancestors are from Lincolnshire and would love to go there soon.
I agree with you on pocket knives! I don't know how people function without a pocket knife on hand. I use mine multiple times each day. Great video Mike!
I was raised on a small farm during the 70's. Dad kept most of our guns loaded and out, ready to go. I was allowed to keep my guns and ammo in my bedroom from age 12. I carry 24/7. Even here at my house. My main carry gun, a S&W 642, is on the table right beside me as I type this. And we have loaded guns in every room. I raised my 4 kids just like us was. All survived. Lol. When I'm asked if I'm scared I just reply -"No, not scared. Just prepared !".
Happy Thanksgiving Mike! Great video, I hope you don't get demonetized for this one. I never could warm up to the old Colt revolvers, they seem too long and narrow for me. A S&W is just a better choice.

My first police duty pistol was a Browning Hi-Power. I had to argue with the gun store guy that my department WOULD let me carry it, and if they wouldn't it was my problem. I still have it and still carry it occasionally. I have an all steel commander-sized 1911 I tote as well (but it's only one ounce lighter than my 3" .44 mag and I'm getting up in years). I have several really great carry guns, but the one most often on me is a S&W 442. Heck right now I have a 442 in one pocket, a pre-model 36 Chief's Special in the other, and a speed strip. Here in semi-tropical coastal Alabama pocket carry is probably the best way to carry. Like you, I don't always have one on me at home, but there is one within reach wherever I am sitting.
Mike, great items to carry. A few years ago my Mrs and I broke (vehicle) down in the Nevada desert. It took us 3 hrs to walk out before we could get cell coverage. Later a search and rescue officer told us we could have called 911 and our cell phone would have connected by satellite. They'd have drove in and picked us up...following our signal.
I think a flashlight is an often overlooked EDC item. I was glad to see you call it out. LED and battery tech has gotten so good these days you can carry a really really bright, long lasting flashlight in your front pocket, barely bigger than a pocket knife. I urge everyone, whether you carry a gun or not, carry a light. Do it for a week and you'll find it useful enough in everyday life that you'll never leave home without one.
Always great to watch EDC videos from experienced gentlemen. Absolutely agree with the cash is king and your home arrangements. As they say in Brazil, um homem prevenido vale por dois ("one careful man has the value of two").
A happy thanksgiving to you and yours. I keep cash in small bills, was in San Deago years ago with several $100.00 bills on a holiday weekend and no place open could break them down or accept that large of a bill.
I'm 50 in upstate NY when I was a kid everyone carried a pocket knife too even at school. We kept our shotguns in the truck window during hunting season too, yes, even in the school parking lot. Never was it a problem at all. In the last few yrs the knife regulation in NYC has changed. Now they can carry a knife under 4" blade length and a carry gun too. Switchblades can be carried if hunting/fishing too. So some things have gotten better in the Empire State! I feel bad for those in Europe who live in tyrant countries.
Roger that ! I'm 60. I took my 22 rifle with me on my school bus when I was going to a friend's house for the weekend. Took it to the principal's office when I got to school. Grabbed it after school and got on my friend's bus to go home with him. And we kept guns in our trucks and cars in the high school parking lot too. I even took guns to my art class and worked in their stocks and got graded on them. And most of us guys carried pocket knives at school. No one was ever shot or stabbed ! Lol.
I don't carry expensive because sometimes, even in a justified shooting, guns are not returned by officials. Also back when I had an interest in cars the saying was the first ninety percent of improvement came from spending the first ten percent of the money. I'd rather have two guns rather than one totally tweaked out. In the house I am no longer going to be jumping and running anymore, but all my house guns are rifles and shotguns instead of pistols.
Happy Thanksgiving Mike. I am about the same age as you and also live in Pa. Also like you I wear eyeglasses so i have in my every day carry is a handkerchief for my glasses or nose.
For EDC I carry as little as possible. Until recently I didn’t even carry a pocket knife, and I do now but only because keys aren’t as good on the tape that’s reinforced with strings that Walmart and Amazon boxes sometimes come sealed with so the pocket knife I carry is just a small old timer 2 blade. Maybe 2” total. I don’t fantasize myself a “knife fighter”. I like subcompact for concealed carry. I used to tote a full-size CC.
1911 38 Super if my memory is correct! I remember because I carry one in 10mm! I also have O.C. and a Taser I can also carry. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and friends and God Bless!
I mostly agree with your EDC choices Mike. I also carry cash, but then, I SELDOM use plastic. Never got into that habit. Besides which, if I buy from a man it is between him and me. Banks, credit agencies, and goovermint keep your snoot out of our business! Also, I do not carry a cell phone. I know I know. In my youth (I am a year older then you Mike) I also had a car problem on a lonely mountain road once long before the cellphone days, My solution was to rebuild my engine on the side of that road. Granted it was a VW Baja Bug which is a over-glorified lawn mower but still.... Took me about 4 hours and I never saw another soul. I also carry silver and gold. My CCW choice recently changed to a Ruger LC9 (oh and I also have a state carry license; OR, and also a UT one. Handy that) Keep up the great work Mike and heal up. -Grey Pilgrim
Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for the video. Enjoyed the departure from your normal content, but favorite videos you make are the ones that come with a history lesson.
Great video, Mike. I'm glad to know I am not the only one to use a book, or in my case a box made to look like a book, for handgun concealment/storage.
Happy Thanksgiving Mike. I got tired of a full size.45ACP 1911 trying to pull my pants down so I stated looking for an alternative. I settled on a Taurus G2C in 9mm. This Christmas I will have been carrying it for a year. I used to have different guns for different occasions but my G2C has pretty much replaced them all. I still strap on the 1911 if I get that warning feeling in my gut.
Great video that I much enjoyed. I like your choice of firearms as well as your carry and placement options. Everything made sense. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I live in Commiefornia and the good news and the bad news is that the weather is great. I have 4 leather jackets including flight jackets in mint condition from the Korean war I have not worn any of em for a couple of years cause I don't get out late at night much when it is more 'cold' LOl.. so my 340PD and my 950B are what I carry. Shoulder holsters don't work with western shirts
Love the video! Our carry choices and layers of defense/mindset are as well. It’s nice to see a video on “EDC” that’s not all about polymer pistols, red dots and rails🙂 Thanks again for the great content. Looking forward to see what comes next.
I used to EDC my Polish P-64 (found some really nice CNC'd French walnut grips on ebay for it - completely changed the vibe of the gun), but it was frankly too nice to be living in my pocket its whole life. So, I bought a Beretta Tomcat to fill that role. Less powerful than 9x18 Makarov, but very concealable. Nightstand gun is my Springfield XDs in .45 ACP with a light / green laser. Table gun is my SKS loaded with 125gr softpoints.
Several years ago when you mentioned you carried a 1911 in 38 Super, I commented I carried a Dan Wesson Guardian in 38 Super. Since then, I had a Browning HP 40 converted to 357 Sig. I already had Novak night sights, mag disconnect hazard removed, upgraded trigger, and C&S hammer. There was a feeding issue, so I send it, and my other BHP40 to Mk3. They'll fix the one and add a beavertail and convert the other. While I am waiting, I bought a Dan Wesson Valor bobtail in 10mm, which I will barrel swap to 357 Sig. Great minds think alike I suppose.
Good info, Mike. I always carry a $50 in my wallet for emergencies and it has saved my bacon more than once! I also carry my 9mm hole puncher everywhere that it is legal as well as OC spray, a good folding knife, a clean handkerchief and my cell phone. My carry piece has a light, but I also carry a flashlight during the dark part of the year here in Alaska.
Happy Thanksgiving Mike. I always enjoy your videos. My EDC has been a Kimber TLE II in .45 acp for years. I carry it all day in a leather IWB holder at 3 o'clock even around the house. This includes a spare eight round magazine in my pocket. The only time my 1911 it's not on me is either when I'm in the shower or in bed. Then it sits on the nightstand and I can see the night sites so I can find it in the dark. My wife has a Mossberg 500 12 gauge on her side. She is a small woman but someone breaking in will put her in a state of pissed-off that I would not want to be staring down the barrel of that 12 gauge. I have been thinking about a Colt Detective or S&W J-frame in .38 Special in a pocket holster for places where carrying the 5" 1911 might be questionable from a legal perspective or impractical from an ergonomic concealment perspective. You bring up some good suggestions with your choices. I have always carried a pocket knife since I too was 9 or 10 and still do to this day. Thank you for all your great content. Stay well.
Great point on the pocket flashlight. I was reminded by a fine gun store employee several years ago, that a light on a pistol in a dark parking lot, if used to determine who is there, if followed by the barrel.....is legally assault. I keep a AA powered pocket light that throws 50 yards for at least a few minutes, in my pocket ever since then. BINGO! The 642 was the best thing I ever bought or carried! My trigger is not bad at all. No TJ necessary. Great minds fail alike.
In a video full of great guns, that Hi Power is just something else entirely! What a neat piece. I'd never even thought about being able to convert a 40 into a 357 sig. Talk about combining an excellent modern round with a really great, timeless classic design.
Good video. I’m about the same age as you based on the 1954 in your screen name. I’m a 1953 model. I’ve carried a pocket knife since I was 5 years old. Teachers would use my knife to open packages. For about the last 30-40 years or so, I like the Swiss Army knife. Keep extra money in my two vehicles for emergency use. The only thing I would suggest is a multi tool, mainly for the pliers. My EDC is now a Ruger LCR with +P .38 Special. I have also recently put an AirTag in my wallet in case I it’s lost.
Happy Thanksgiving sir!!!😊 Thank you for ALL the great videos and info you put out there! I can honestly say there I things I thought I knew, that I didn't know correctly or I didn't know at all!!! That knowledge is priceless!!😊 thanks again!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯 My edc for the last 24years has been a charter arms undercover 38special that I inherited from my great grandfather and it was his back up duty weapon for almost 30 years before that!!😊 Or at least 85% of the time. I have a few other tools for the other situations I occasionally find myself in!😊😊 I carry it loaded with swchp 158gr. 😊 Checking in from N.E. Georgia 💯🤘☺️☮️
My experience says call 911 first, state that you had to shoot someone because they tried to rob you etc, you need medical and police give the address then hang up and call your attorneys. Your phone records will be used against you in a criminal/civil case, and they will paint you as callus and caring more about covering your rear than helping the poor guy you shot. Worst case they arrive before you can call the attorney, you exercise your 5th amendment rights and have to call the attorney from jail. Massad Ayoob talks about the race to 911, first one to call gets their story told to the responding police. Criminals will call and report the crazy guy who shot their friend. Also they might have family and friends of the shootee arriving and having the cops to keep the peace, is a good thing.
Mike, thanks for a most interesting video. As I already knew about your HiPower I was pleasantly surprised to learn that all your other self defence guns are revolvers.
That Hi-Power in .357 SIG is very interesting. That's a one-of-a-kind that I'd never even heard of! I'd be interested in seeing a video about that one!
I carry a Smith 442 quite a bit, but I had to put some bigger Pachmyr grips on it because the boot grips that came with it just eat my hand up. Still works for pocket carry with an untucked shirt, and is CERTAINLY more comfortable to shoot. Also, I'm looking into a .38 super Colt myself. Always an itch I've wanted to scratch.
Mike! You know, there's this old biker dude in Nevada, who owns a machine shop forever and a day. There's a video his house set up on dealing with bad people invaders. I think you'd love it, I know! You remind me,.... of me.
Great video, I really enjoyed it. Here in NYS carry insurance is illegal to have. Tried to purchase it once and the company was not allowed to sell it in this state. The flash light is a good idea, will have to find one small enough. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
To your point about not using a self defense weapon with a light on it, as soon as you turn that light on, you have revealed your position, and have given the bad guy something bright to shoot at. I keep a flashlight right beside my nightstand gun, so if I need to investigate a bump in the night, I hold the flashlight far to my left side, and then turn it on, while my gun is at the ready position.
I stick to one pistol for edc all year. I carry a full size 1911 in 45 auto IWB at 3 o’clock. When in the home I keep it in a shoulder holster for comfort. I can’t leave guns all over the house because of grandchildren. For that reason I have it on me 24/7. I prefer to not have a carry rotation because I believe consistency is important.
Happy Thanksgiving. I think a lot of people who keep asking you about your EDC just want to know what you tote. I would call 911 first but the attorney immediately afterward.
Great video, Mike. I share some of your sentiments, but generally keep my EDC consistent year round. That means that my EDC has to be small enough to conceal in trouser pockets or IWB, but still big enough to effectively manipulate. I had a couple of D-frame Colts and a Python years ago. Except for the Diamondback, I tended to prefer J and K-frame S&Ws. I ended up trading the Diamondback for something else back when everyone wanted a semi and the wheel gun market was a buyer’s market. I handled the new King Cobra a while back and have been thinking of an excuse. It feels like the Diamondback but in .357. Or a Viper. The other day I examined a used Taurus 856 with a three inch tube. It felt decent, but either $260 is the average price for a used Taurus 856 or there was something else going on. I am going to look harder at the 856 Ultralite as they’re six shot. I need an airweight pocket revolver and the 856 looks like a good option. Nothing against the 642 but the the internal lock, the lousy sights, and the price don’t stack well in their favor currently. I still haven’t encountered one with a trigger that was so bad that a couple thousand trigger presses in try practice and some range time wouldn’t make better. I’ve still got steel Js that will pocket carry, but aluminum is better for an all day.
For years I've carried a Coast G20 flash light, on a lanyard around my neck. I use rechargeable triple A batteries. This little flashlight is absolutely essential for working on cars or just finding your way around. You don't know how many times someone has asked to use my flashlight. It's just like carrying a small pocket knife. How can a person function in life without having a jack knife is beyond my realm of thinking.
I carried a Smith and Wesson 36 for 30 + years and finally upgraded to the Smith and Wesson 632UC this year. I have been a fan of the .32 H&R mag since the 1980 but Smith and Wesson only offered the J frame in .32 H&R mag in the 90's. Kid's were in diapers and no way could I afford a new gun then. You might think about changing you .38 Spl to .32H&R about the same ballistics with 40 percent less recoil. Prefect for a air weight J frame

I agree about the browning high-power being a better gun than a 1911 in either 9mm or 357 Sig.
Thanks for the tour
Nice sensible gear!
Happy Thanksgiving Mike! It’s like you read my mind, thanks for the video. Enjoy the day…
Good info, Mike.
As a previous commenter has said on other videos. Your videos are the only ones i know i can hit like before i finish it
Thanks for your video!!! It's always great to see what others carry to give yourself ideas. I see we think alike. :) Happy Thanksgiving.
Hi Mike, hope you and your family have a great thanksgiving Sir. Well thought out EDC. At home like you have something near me at all times.
Hi Mike, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
The 38 Supers are floating around in inventory. You can have Novaks install their “Answer” grip safety eliminator. They still do that
Happy Thanksgiving sir!!!😊
Thank you for ALL the great videos and info you put out there! I can honestly say there I things I thought I knew, that I didn't know correctly or I didn't know at all!!! That knowledge is priceless!!😊 thanks again!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯
My edc for the last 24years has been a charter arms undercover 38special that I inherited from my great grandfather and it was his back up duty weapon for almost 30 years before that!!😊
Or at least 85% of the time. I have a few other tools for the other situations I occasionally find myself in!😊😊
I carry it loaded with swchp 158gr.
😊
Checking in from N.E. Georgia 💯🤘☺️☮️
Great Video Sir ! Happy Thanksgiving From Canada !
You remind me,.... of me.
Hi Mike
Great Video !!! Have you and your Family have a Wonderful Thanksgiving Day !!!
That a boy Mike very informative video!
Great video, I really enjoyed it. Here in NYS carry insurance is illegal to have. Tried to purchase it once and the company was not allowed to sell it in this state. The flash light is a good idea, will have to find one small enough. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Hello Mike wishing you and your Family a very Happy Thanksgiving from your custom pistol case maker 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻great vid as always
Wish you good health and a happy thanksgiving!!!
Mike I enjoy all your videos. I really hate what youtube has done to any video that mentions a gun.
Much love for the high power!
Happy Thanksgiving. I think a lot of people who keep asking you about your EDC just want to know what you tote. I would call 911 first but the attorney immediately afterward.
What !?. I figured you carried an 1850 pepperbox.. I remember carrying my boy scout pocket knife in the 70s, and nobody thought nothing of it.
