Dude this footage is insane! Gorgeous points of views and mutiple pov's as well. It's really awesome to analyze how the pro's are rowing and I can really look at the technique.
Nice little vid. What comes across - beyond what you talk about - is how you have understood various complexities of boat moving but are able to distill them down to the basics for a nice concise description on what you’re getting at, without complicating it with extraneous information. Good stuff 👍 I’m a fan of catch timing and agree, get the suspension straight away in an eight and suddenly it feels ridiculously light and easy.
I'm covering for a rower in an 8+ tomorrow at a competition in Banyoles, where this video was shot 😀 It will be my very first experience with sweep rowing,so this video has been extremely helpful. Thanks, see you around!!
I like the format, IE you and or the lads talking to camera whilst walking, and the technical info. I'd be interested to know how many of your subscribers/viewers are real rowers contra how many are "ergers" like myself. If I Was at home in the UK I think it'd be fun to try actual rowing, but there's a huge threshold to overcome between being a "skinnyerger" and actually sitting in a boat with anyone else, never mind 7 others.
Nice work Cam! The technical video is exactly what Aussie rowers need! The view looking down the boat from your head was terrific. Any chance of mounting one on (or behind) the cox for a view up the boat also ? Keep the explanations and demos coming! Cheers, tony i
Love the technical vid Cam! Definitely would like to see more like it 👍 Re: reason being together/ apart at different parts of the stroke, what would you say is the typical cause of the separation? Is it solely different stroke lengths? I.e us tall chaps (I myself am 6ft8) vs others that are say 6ft?
@Cam, what are your thoughts on leaning outwards versus sitting and pulling as straight longitudinally as possible? I am not an expert, but I understand technique coaching has changed over time. Curious for your thoughts.
@@CameronBuchan Do you think there are any material boatspeed losses caused by either aero drag (from leaning out into the non-zero wind) or by mechanical inefficiency with the "forces" not being aligned with the keel longitudinally so for example you lose a little of inertial glide to minor (but non zero) yaw if the guys are basically moving diagonally rather than fore and aft. Lastly, I'd worry about not being able to recruit ALL your muscles symmetrically at 100% if theres unnecessary lean. This could be quite significant if even one glute or a quad quad or ab-side is down 10% on max power delivery. It would probably fatigue the sister-muscle sooner too?
@ most boats don’t go fast enough for aerodynamics to be an issue. Sweep is rotating around a pin so there has to be something going out of line regardless of lean. Impacting any “mechanical forces” you’d encounter. On that same point, you’re going to be asymmetrical due to that rotation around the pin. The body can’t be expected to apply the same pressure across the body, again, regardless of lean.
Hi Cam thanks for this interesting video! I wonder what kind of instrumentation do you have attached to the gates? are you measuring force and angle of strokes? Thanks!! Best
takes time and focus! learning in a boat along with other novices can make it very hard to distinguish your genuine mistakes versus mistakes forced on you by the boat. you really have to grow alongside the crew.
Great video format and content! Some coaches argue that the arm thats closer to the rigger should be extended and not bent, what’s your take on that? Keep up the good work and cheers from Portugal!
Hey Cameron, great video. I'm stroke seat of an Australian schoolgirl 8. I'm having a lot of difficulty with feeling people rush me during the recovery. I am trying to create a good ratio and stay on rate, but it's hard with everyone doing their own thing. We are also placing at different times meaning our catches are all out of whack- and I agree with you, I think that is the most important part of the stroke. Any advice?
At lower rating, the slight pause at the finish was very noticeable, particularly with the forward-looking shots. It disappears in the speed pieces. But that pause is very helpful for acquiring timing in big boats.
Thanks for sharing the video and appreciated watching y'alls technique. Y'all definitely compress more than I do at the catch and tend to have more body over at the catch; whereas y'all are more upright. Nice smooth rowing. Was curious; what is that wire running to the oarlocks?
Hey mate, great video! In the paddling you guys are pausing at the finish - a controversial move as far as I’m aware. Everyone has an opinion on pausing, what’s your’s?
I wouldn't say we are pausing at the finish really. The backs may stay still but generally the blades are moving consistently. I think its whatever makes the boat go faster, pause or none!
Cam do you have any opinions on where to put the inside hand on the grip? Is it advantageous to have it closer or farther away from your outside/pulling hand???
Can you bless our 8 as we endeavour as j15s to beat the j16s tomorrow. We ask that you place your blessings upon us so that we may be victorious in these dark times.

Just wonderful. I'm really enjoying your mixture of authentic vlogs and nice rowing clips in between. Please never stop vlogging👍😁
Sweet new format for the video

Great technique, learned a lot watching the rowers in this video, don't stop these videos Cam!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for putting this video up in time for Lent Bumps!

Perhaps one day! We will see!
Really liked today’s format.
I'm a small time SA kid and I recently hit sub 7 thanks to you. Keep working hard and hope 2020 goes well
Well done Hunter! #yamsquad

He made a video about rowing with people that are different to you quite recently.
Walking and talking to camera very smooth; nice technical focus in the boat; and of course a shout out to the 3 seat - the ejector seat!
Nice video Cameron👌💥. Really enjoyed it
Loved the footage and the commentary Thankyou ... rowing an eight is awesome
Fantastic, really informative and interesting Cam 👍🏼
Nice video. I like the different angles and your commentary. Pair rowing video of a similar nature? Maybe I missed it.
This is the first video I have done like this! A pair one is a good idea!
Great advice!
🍠
Excellent - I'm really interested in the technical aspects of rowing at international level
Really enjoyed it!
Hi Cam, I would like a video talking about how to improve in the erg. I'm 15 years old and in 20 minutes sesión I work in a 2:04. And Great video!
I wrote it bad?
Alot of my videos talk about improving on the erg!
Nice vid cam
@Cam, what are your thoughts on leaning outwards versus sitting and pulling as straight longitudinally as possible? I am not an expert, but I understand technique coaching has changed over time. Curious for your thoughts.
I’d say it’s a “depends” answer. Some people can lean and it work, some people can’t!

Wow beautiful rowing, I'm used to being in a novice 8 and I want that control 😭
Takes practice

That's a whole 'mother video!! I am actually currently experimenting with less bend in the arm!

I think the best thing for your boat, it sounds like, is to sync up a bit more. I recommend talking to your coach for sure!
Your seven person should control this for you and give you time

Thanks Eric! The wires are for boat telemetry, allowing us to have stats for each individual!
Cameron Buchan ah that’s pretty sweet. Never knew that existed.
Great work!

Cameron Buchan clearly a short pause at the finish there
Isso é muito relaxante de assistir.
Cam do you have any opinions on where to put the inside hand on the grip? Is it advantageous to have it closer or farther away from your outside/pulling hand???
Some people argue where to put your hands but I think it is down to personal preference!
cool!!!!
i am japanese rower.
thankssss!!.!!!!!!
How fast do these go on average?
Can really vary on conditions but for steady paddling around 1:40ish/500m
Great

Unfortunately did not get to the blessing in time? How did the mission go?
@@CameronBuchan unfortunately not as we would have liked with some steering difficulties
Listen to me son Jim??? You got clapped don’t lie
Do you prefer 2 x or 2-
I am not so good at sculling so I would say 2-!
How to eight.
Take a stroke at full power
Take 200+ more strokes
Don't screw up, even slightly
Well done, you rowed in the eight
