    I was lucky to have been old enough to see the Doors in Detroit in May, 1968. Then, about 35 years later, I got to know Ray Manzarek. We belonged to the same gym in Los Angeles and worked out together frequently. He was a true gentleman, and we had some interesting conversations.
    As for the Rose Parade ... I was a teenager in Detroit watching the Parade every year on TV while the local weather hovered somewhere between 0 and 15 degrees. It was usually like 64 degrees in Pasadena. I was determined to move to Southern California and finally settled in Santa Monica about 20 years later. I've been lucky enough to see the Rose Parade in person, and enjoy the beautiful weather.

      "I am the Master Cylinder, if I only had Felix's Bag of Tricks, I could invade the Earth!" , my Pop's grew up in the shadow's of the GM plants, my grand parents saw postcards of the rose parade and moved out here in 39. What a treasure for you hanging with 'Ray' I saw him in the 70's at an, "Dance on Fire' video release party at 'The Country Club' in the Valley, 'KMET' put it on with the remaining guys, and then three times in the tours Ray and Robbie did which were truly a treat. I too saw them in Jan. 68, incredible daze right? Hangin with Ray, you rock Maan, Happy New Year!

    My family was at the Rose Parade on 1-1-1967, went to the bowl game, USC v. Purdue, then my brother saw 'The Doors' on 'She Bang' in Los Angeles and told all his friends at school, "You have to hear this new band, 'The Doors,' and their song, 'Break on Through to the Other Side.'" Next year, my brother saw the band at the Hollywood Bowl. I met Robbie Krieger after his concert. He's a really nice guy. Thanks, Airbaja, for the clip and fun memories. Happy New Year through the doors of perception.

      Right on, it wasn't a dream, bitchin times right, J/POET? Met Robbie after the show? Far 'f'ing' out! Thanks for sharing this story, antidotes concerning the openness of the Doors are met with a welcome mat here! I was 14 and drummer of a popular band that played around the Hollywood area 1966-67. We were too young to drive and our parents had to take us to gigs and supervise us as in some of the clubs alcohol was served. There was alot of buzz going around the Sunset Strip about Love, the Doors and the Grateful Dead. The Dead were in LA holding their "acid tests" as LSD had not been made illegal until October. Summer '66 was the real "Summer of Love" and it was in LA not San Francisco. The Dead went back to the Bay Area and it was the Doors that "broke thru" while all of us had expected Love to become the American Beatles. I got to hear the Doors in early '67 and they were different. The mood they created reminded me of an "execution" a beheading. It was creepy and the "Lizard King" proved to be the best shaman. The rest is history.

    This is a rare video of The Doors. I never heard of the first song and the TV show. Then, when I listened to Jim Morrison sing, Break On Through, it brought me a lot of memories of my beloved brothers. I thought that the audience were going to give The Doors a big round of applause? I thought their performance was so cool! I also liked their first song.

    • @Airbaja

    Fantastic job. Been a Doors fan for as long as I held a ticket in my hand for the Boston Arena {early show} in 1970. I did not even know their music when I had the ticket. Long story short my cousin ended up going without me. My parents thought at the time that a nine year old was still too young to go to a concert. But I did get the ticket stub and a full report of the show.
    You do a fabulous job with these videos. I appreciate you taking out the time to make them. ~

    Well, in 1967 I was 8...so you're 5 years older than me..in 1969 when I was 10 I wanted a cassette player and so for Christmas my dad went and bought me one and along with it was the Doors debut album (but on cassette tape) "Light My Fire"..I didn't ask for that album but fell in love with The Doors from that day forward and I have been a fan my whole life. I often thought years later. What could have possibly encouraged my dad to choose that for me?? Lol and I'm sure if he knew of Jim Morrison's antics in state and the trouble he'd gotten himself into he may not have..lol he even burned a Cheech & Chong album a friend had bought me for my birthday 2 years later. So I never asked , and he's still around but it's still a mystery.ha

      That's one kool Pop's! By 71 I was on the streets, my Dad was kinda kool, but the lady on the broom ran things, The Doors were my "Life line ".. Here is my guess on why your Pop's got The Doors album with Light my Fire on it. In 69 Light my Fire had crossed-over to mainstream music, Jose Fellisiano had a #1 hit with it, Nancy Sinatra, really KM it was covered by a ton of folks back then, so adults dug it like us kids, if he had to hear it blasting, he knew he liked it. At least that what I thought when I did about the same thing with my oldest son. He wanted a Karaoke box, and I got him Nirvana's first album/ cassette, just came out and I dug 'Teen Spirit', hope I did not bore you, lol.

    Excellent channel I just can't get enough of it, I only saw the doors once here in Dublin where I'm from minus the 🦎 👑 naturally. the doors of the 21 century the tour was called. it was amazing, I was just honoured to be with in the same four walls as robby and Ray. But the best times I remember to do with the doors was when I was late in to my teenage years me and maybe five or six of my closest buddy's would get completely fucked up and go and see a doors tribute band in a old theatre in the centre of the city, the theatre totally resembled the the theatre in the Oliver stone movie in meen the show only got going at midnight and I fuckn loved every minute of it. We used to get so wasted that we used think we were at a doors show back in the day. The singer had the hole morrison vibe down. Not only did he resemble/sound like Jim but he was about the same age as him as well. They were some good ole times.

      As a new band still trying to make it I think they were “forced” to do it the way those TV shows were. Same when they “played” in American Bandstand (the Crystal Ship, little interview and then Light My Fire, and when it started John hadn’t even sat at the drums yet!)

    I wasn't born until March 68. My uncle, 19, had just been killed the week before in Vietnam, and my dad , only 18,was still in shock and denial. My mom, 18 and petrified the world was coming apart too quickly. My 2 aunt's, 16 and 17, were heavily into the music scene and culture, which I benefitted from greatly later as a musician. They introduced me to people I never would've been. Some are now so famous it surreal to me. Anyhow, the Doors always did something to me that honestly, I'm probably lucky I wasn't a teen when they were on the up,being an adrenaline freak and refusing to be topped, although I know better, it would've been a bad mixture. But I've always loved the music and the mystique and legend Jim was making.

    So strange as how, especially here, Morrison the performer, visually, doesn't match the passion and power exuded by his voice. He's a dead-eyed, motionless, emotionless figure, yet with something entirely different coming out from within (Course, here, they were unmiked - Krieger isn't even plugged in). Musically, The Doors were exceptionally tight and beautifully orchestrated. Morrison's singing was, especially for a rock vocalist of his time, VERY different. He was more of a crooner, singing in a romantic style more like Sinatra - which fit the music perfectly! But it was their music that people truly dug - not their stage presence. Today, it's often the opposite, unfortunately.

    • @Airbaja
      @Airbaja  6 років тому +2

      I can dig it, I might add Jim began with his back to the audience, he was a poet who grew into the roll of a lead singer. He was also a major influence on Iggy, who was infatuated with
      Jim. At one point, Ig was going to front the Doors but he was
      too erratic for them, thanks to his heroin addiction.

    Does the original audio exist anywhere, or was it lip-synced? The intensity of the studio recording seems out of line with the subdued demeanor of Jim here.

    They were lip syncing to the pre recorded song. Watch Ray not even hitting most of the keys. I saw a youtube interview with Robby Kreiger saying that the TV producers wanted it done like that and they hated it and wouldnt air band again.....

    • @Airbaja
      @Airbaja  6 років тому +2

      Sorta kinda, the producers wanted it that way because the TV Studio's back then had very poor acoustics. They had to do it four more times, American Bandstand, Ed Sullivan, The Smothers Brothers, and Johnathan Winters Show. I have films of all those on my channel. However, after this show, Jim had Bruce make up a track with out vocals, so he sang live directly into the audio feed through the Soundboard. Thanks for the comment Ross. ua-cam.com/video/pZuN-cH4zTA/v-deo.html

    You might want to learn to spell before you post on UA-cam again. It's "rite of passage," not "right." The words "chicks" and "cops" when used as plurals (as you have), do not involve an apostrophe, nor should "cop" be capitalized. "Vail" is a verb meaning to take off one's hat; you meant "veil."
