"And what he is objecting to in pop culture is the disposable, trend driven nature of it. Crumb wasn't really into much counter culture. He hated rock music in the 60's. What does that tell you? He was always out of his time." I felt the same way too.
It’s mental freedom, the truest liberation. It’s what’s really on the line, what we’re losing, what might already be lost. Saddest part, most don’t know or realize or care. They have no point of reference beyond the pop culture they grew up with, the monotonous suburban surrounds they were raised in. Corporate logos, commercial jingles. Fashion trends, Top 40, top box office. What’s ‘in,’ what’s happening, what’s NOW. Dank memes, trending hashtags, content gone viral. Community life is dying or dead. We’re post-post irony. Anger has turned to despair and isolation. We act like this is normal cuz it is; it’s all we’ve known. We can’t see beyond what’s put in front of us. We don’t want to see, don’t want to look. Above all, don’t want to know. The virtual Amusement Park of modern life is the height of civilization, the height of culture - the height of existence. Written in the LED stars against the blank screen of our collective dream lives.
This is some of the best thing i seen on utube.. I love this guy and everything he resembles, just hearing his speeches make me feel nostalgic, feel something old and peculiar, just have agree to everything he says..
Yea I saw that he was apart of this culture is so anti against. He has on items that reflect a particular popularity at some point. A tad hypocritical but hey who isn't? Still one of my favorite artists.
No it doesn't need to be 'pointed out' because Crumb doesn't collect records for a trend, he does it because most of the stuff he loves was released on that format only. His 'iconic art work' is what he created from his own mind/imagination. And what he is objecting to in pop culture is the disposable, trend driven nature of it. Crumb wasn't really into much counter culture. He hated rock music in the 60's. What does that tell you? He was always out of his time.
Crumb you are doing the same with a straw fedora, gramaphone collection and iconic art work that represent the 60s and 70s counter culture. While that should've been pointed out, I agree with him on pop culture .
Profound and on point. There’s a slight irony here in that what sets off Crumb’s diatribe in the first place is loud, “angry”, “epithet-filled” rap music blasting from a passerby’s boom box. The irony being (at least from my personal point of view) how what eventually became the very “market researched”, “mass produced” money making rap music industry that he is (partly) lamenting - originally began as something that was, at its core, very pure and organic. I grew up in NY in the 70s and was aware of (although not fully conscious) of the emerging culture of Hip Hop (encompassing music - sourced from already existing music which only required a certain sonic aesthetic - “break beats” as they came to be known; also a whole separate DJ culture sprung from it, it’s very own dance scene -aka “bboying”, an outlaw art scene - “graffiti” - and of course “emceeing” or rapping. Which is the one element that caught on more than the others and as a result became co-opted by the very forces Crumb speaks about. However, the beginning of this whole thing was indeed pure. Of this I can attest.
The judgement this guy has for the world followed him to Paris where he found himself projecting his unhappiness from his childhood on everyone at the café.
and its got how much worse? many adults dont even know how to get dressed anymore, especially in the burbs. the dad is wearing the identical jeans ballcap gym shoes and tee as his 8 yr old son and the wife has not a bit of femininity in her, as she is only decipherable from the husband and son in her mom jeans because she is shorter with longer hair and gym shoes, and this is the SoCal burbs of LA, i cant imagine the midwest. very wealthy people leaving their absurdly ugly mcmansions to dine out in posh restaurants in clothes that wouldnt have been appropriate for a post office run not that long ago- even the 80's. no wonder across the pond they shudder at the sight of american vacationers. and manners, social graces? i need to start making any forum posts properly written, its a twitter effect. more people need to speak out, i could take crumb taking this to a 2 hour rant!
Articulated it better than I ever could have. He is SO right.
My thoughts exactly!

The post-post modern world; the destruction of institutions, narratives and mythology has left us with an emptiness in our lives
Excerpts of this are in the start of Simulacra by Johnny 5 and Yak.
self awareness can truely be a curse

He’s talking about becoming a walking label. He doesn’t wear labels.

Long live Crumb.
He's correct. Look at history and look at Japan now. Homogeneity cultures are the best.
