Robert Crumb’s Misanthropic Diatribe Against Humanity
Вставка

- American cartoonist, Robert Crumb, is not a fan of humanity. Here’s one of his more misanthropic diatribes: “I’m such a negative person, and always have been. Was I born this way? I don’t know. I am constantly disgusted by reality, horrified and afraid. I hate most of humanity. Though I might be very fond of particular individuals, humanity in general fills me with contempt and despair.
I hate most of what passes for civilisation. I hate the modern world. I hate the hordes, the crowds in their vast cities, with all their hateful vehicles, their noise and their constant meaningless comings and goings. I hate modern architecture. I despise modern music. I hate business, having to deal with money. Money is one of the most hateful inventions of the human race. I hate the commodity culture, in which everything is bought and sold. I hate the mass media, and how passively people suck up to it.
I hate having to get up in the morning and face another day of this insanity. I hate having to eat, defecate, maintain the body - I hate my body. Nature is horrible. It’s not cute and lovable. It’s kill or be killed. How I hate the courting ritual. I was always repelled by my own sex drive, which in my youth never left me alone. I was constantly driven by frustrated desires to do bizarre and unacceptable things with and to women. My soul was in constant conflict about it. I never was able to resolve it. Old age is the only relief.
I hate the way the human psyche works, the way we are traumatised and stupidly imprinted in early childhood and have to spend the rest of our lives trying to overcome these infantile mental fixations. And we never ever fully succeed in this endeavour.
I hate organised religions. I hate governments. It’s all a lot of power games played out by ambition-driven people, and foisted on the weak, the poor, and on children. Most humans are bullies. Adults pick on children. Older children pick on younger children. Men bully women. The rich bully the poor. People love to dominate. I hate the way humans worship power - one of the most disgusting of all human traits. I hate the human tendency towards revenge and vindictiveness. I hate the way humans are constantly trying to trick and deceive one another, to swindle, to cheat, and take unfair advantage of the innocent, the naive and the ignorant.
I hate the vacuous, false, banal conversation that goes on among people. Sometimes I feel suffocated. I want to flee from it.
For me, to be human is, for the most part, to hate what I am. When I suddenly realise that I am one of them, I want to scream in horror.”

Not a day goes by without someone intentionally making negative decisions for the wrong reasons.
Someone with sanity at last!
Every single word he said resonated 😅

Sir, have you tried death metal?
I absolutely feel the same, im only a teenager and feel very alone. The thought of having to live in the present and the future is depressing.
I understand these writings. Other commenters seem to miss his point, sad. Its all true, and I absolutely agree with him
Madhouse Earth. it comforts me to think that in most of the universe, absolutely nothing is happening.
It comforts me to think that there are likely civilizations out there much more advanced than ours, with values like empathy and integrity developed over millenia. As Crumb says, not much of that to be had here.
💯 same here
Reminds me of another artistic hero, George Carlin.
I think misanthropy is part of being an ethical person.
I don't want to be ethical. I just want the planet all to myself

The thing he says about trauma and imprinting is so true. I've had certain traumas early on in my life, and ever since then I feel like their prisoner. I think I suffer from PTSD, but more then that, those traumas have had such a huge influence in shaping my life. I wish I could "heal" and move pass them, but I don't know how. Thinking about things rationally doesn't seem to help, because beliefs and traumas often exist in the irrational, less conscious parts of our psyche. I've never met anyone that could help me.
Yep yep I can relate
It's frightening how similar he and I are. No wonder I respect him so much.
Yep, relatable
Desperately l am always clinging to the pitiful wish that within my limited human agency, l shall not increase the sum of evil.
Beautifully well said.

As I get older I relate more to this man.
Although put in a very negative perspective, he does have a point.
Maybe if humans hadn’t chosen to exploit one another we wouldn’t be living in hell right now.
What a based man.
I agreed
Capitalism makes everyone feel this way
Communism and Capitalism can make people feel this way Coporations need to be phased out
This man is so spot on with everything he said. Except men bully women, other way around.
Correct.
Well I have wondered all of my life why I dislike people so much, but I now realize that I am this man reincarnate . I could not agree more with every word and sentiment in this video. And I can remember having one of these thoughts while sitting on the school bus watching the other children on the way to school
Tell us what you really think Mr Crumb
And don't sugar coat it or be subtle
I really like this channel and I agree with most of the observations in each video. but I do feel a disconnect. I’m a middle of the road Aussie man with an average job, but I still see so much to be thankful for. This is not even close to my outlook on life.
Also I loaded up an older video which i then left to watch for later and didn’t see. Was this video changed? Was it originally more personal? I am interested but of course if you didn’t want it out there I respect that too.
What observations do you agree with?
Is this guy still living? I would love to meet a fellow misanthrope and others like us.
Amen.
Wow I can totally relate
Don’t get out the razor blades, he’s got funny cartoons
His work is funny because he understands the human condition.
Well, those are my feelings almost precisely to a T.
Well, that sums it.
I don't agree with everything he's said, but it's generally agreeable tbh.
A wise man once said that it takes a person who hates themselves and the world to write great comedy, which for the most part satirizes the human condition.
That said, the dude spent his whole life concentrating on the things that he hates, and perhaps missed the things worth loving..... very sad.
This man seemed to be severely depressed. I, too, consider myself a misanthrope but I wouldn't say I hate everything about life and living and people. I just dislike most people. Reality, the world, nature, animals--those are reprieves from humans for me.
depression is a consequence and as far as you are aware you have no idea if he is depressed...
Seems legit
I like the music of the object that rings the bells.
Happy Birthday Robert. I'm sorry, I meant shitty birthday Robert. Ain't life a peach.........
I hate reptiles
I am inclined to agree with much of his assessment: the modern societal part. The natural biological part is fine
I too am a misanthrope but THIS was misanthopy on steroids. It sounded more like severe depression (which I know can occur alongside misanthropy). I hate most things but THIS was dark AF.
It's almost as if people want to control everyone else, wait they do...
@@changedname2244Its plain simple
I agreed but he's telling the damn truth about everything.
We need people like this! We need the mad, the angry, the loving, the kind, the enlightened, the dull... Its the fabric or reality... Otherwise there would be no art, no music, no love, no hate... We need it all! The alternative is something dystopian/communist! Thanks for the great content!
I hate to like this, but is so familiar
I blame quality control 😂
Omg I think I've just discovered my other half!
am i Robert Crumb 😆
Agree with almost everything. Idk why he's so negative about sex drive, that's something unhealthy. For me it always has been one of the things that make life more or less bearable, I never wanted to do "unacceptable" things with women though, Idk what he meant, looks like some society indoctrination which loves to demonize anything sex related. He's right though about "domination", even in sex people can't just relax and have fun and don't think about who's dominating who, meh. I also see nothing wrong in revenge, the aggressor should be punished. Everything else - couldn't agree more. Oh, and there're decent modern music out there
All misery starts with sex 😊
Perception is projection.
That's just the new age way of saying "I know you are but what am i" and it contains as much depth.
Old Rob's always needed help. There's some grains of truth to a good number of his complaints here, but he's clearly got plenty of personal baggage colouring his worldview.
3.5% of the population (black males aged 13 to 35). 65% of non-familial violent assaults nationwide. He's still being too kind. Some humans aren't even people.
Bet he was a right laugh at fucking parties 🎈
At least he is self aware - he reminds me of Friedrich Nietzsche. I feel sad for Crumb, he despises what he lacks - power. But ultimately it is only he who disempowers himself. His perception is his greatest victimiser - it is a great tragedy because even Nietzsche's final works showed growth from cynicism into self realisation that the 'will to power' starts and ends with oneself by living an 'aesthetic' life.
"Deep Crisis. Stuck in bed. I hate life." Nietzche wrote that in his diary. I hate how people act like he had somehow transcended anything. Life just sucks.
This is what happens when you're an ex copper that now works at a university. People that hate themselves are always the worst.
What are you saying?
He must be fun at parties
I find it equally embarrassing for you and hilarious that you think that joke is even remotely valid here :)
@@northernbeachesguy3245 No less valid than your response?
I don't think he goes to them.
He wouldn't go to one anyway. I sure wouldn't as humans like to ruin everything.
That's what Jesus said 2000 years ago
Luke 14:26 CSB
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, and even his own life-he cannot be my disciple.
Matthew 10:37 "may provide the interpretational key to unlock what Jesus means by “hate” here: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Yes, we are to exhibit deep affections for our closest earthly kin, but Jesus is saying we must love even them less than we do him if we would prove to be genuine disciples. Of course, it’s also true that I will love my family and friends well in direct to proportion to the depth of my love for Jesus."
Also we know what Jesus considered to be the 2nd most important law of all..
"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He [Jesus] said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. ' This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
Well Crumb old son, maybe you'll be reincarnated as a pot plant and you can just talk to the weeds all day....
What are you saying?
Struth, he had some issues.
The human condition hasn't changed since the Fall .... The apostle Paul , in the first chapter of Romans, makes a more expansive condemnation BUT also points to redemption, through the Lord Jesus Christ...
Yes humanity is disgusting, but that attitude doesn't get you anywhere, in fact it just makes things worse. The behaviour of others isn't your fault or responsibility. You're not responsible. You're not obligated to fix their behaviour. Humans have limited rational agency, and as a consequence of this, limited moral agency, and thus your anger at them should melt away. The worse the crime, the less likely it is they possessed sufficient moral agency. It makes more sense that they didn't know what they were doing was wrong, than the alternative. Think of them like misbehaving animals or toddlers.
Adults are supposed to have a functioning frontal cortex to make sound judgements unless they’re antisocial or otherwise mentally impaired. Plenty of people are malicious and evil, with intent. That’s what’s so powerful about Crumb’s observations. Once you see this, you can’t unsee it.
@@cloudmountaindog8537
I agree that plenty of people are malicious and evil with intent, and possess the rational and moral agency to understand what they were doing is wrong. Those cases are especially heinous and I have no problem applying an eye for an eye, which is further than most people are willing to go.
And I also think a lot of people don't possess the necessary agency.
For instance, it is so obvious to me on a rational level that if I'm asymptomatic and have tested negative for C, and others are V'd against C with multiple doses, then there is no case to be made that I pose a significant threat or risk to them. Yet society was unable to figure this out, or they did figure it out but there is still something blocking them from incorporating it into their worldview. Give me a better explanation and I'll change my mind. Explain to me how such a simple, basic, obvious logical argument could not be understood by a rational agent. My working hypothesis is that their rational agency was somehow impaired by their fear of C.
In the book Ponerology, the study of evil, the psychiatrist talks about how people who act with malicious intent are cloaked by the fact that other people can't conceive of this. Good people, in other words, can see no evil.
what makes it worse is that you constantly have to be reminded that you are basically a puppet in a stupid game where you control absolutely nothing surrounded by highly manipulative individual at all times...
As the bible says none of them are any good, no not one. Thankfully God commands us to love people or I’d have the same hate.
God isn't real. Humans suck ass regardless of whatever your fairytale book has to say.
Isn't the point to question how we have arrived at such misanthropic thoughts about ourselves and humanity? How can thinking this way be good for anyone even if we all could do a little better at certain aspects of our existence. The point is not to devolve into self-loathing but to deflect the voices that fill our minds with hatred for our own species. When I was told (not directly but via societal expectations) I am failing as a parent, just as a "fuck you" I had another child. If you let them tell you to loathe yourself and everything else on the planet, they win and you lose.
People suck and death always wins in the win. Race is real and blacks have ruined the West. Deal with it. I'm not god.
well what do we have here an egoistical piece of shit that will impose this bullshit world to it's children to feed their pathetic ego at that point just don't think just obey because that's what unintelligent humans do they just conform and rationalize no brain to be used there a perfect puppet...
