  • This is a review of the brand new Multipick ELITE Dual Gauge pick kit. Multipick has REALLY been upgrading their pick kits for the past couple of years to accommodate virtually every request from the LockSport community. At the same time they have gone to great lengths to offer innovative new pick profiles and maintain a very high level of quality and finish on their products. Yes, I am a fan boy, but then I am a fan boy of ALL high quality gear, regardless of the manufacturer.

    This is exactly what I would want in a "Build your own" style set. Fair price, awesome case, and no weird stuff, that I'll never use. I really like hooks, but give me a couple rakes too, yeah! Love the tension tool set. Glad they cut down the number of postal tension tools, they all have the same tip, just a little more or less reach into the lock. Would have loved to see some of the wave rakes stuffed in there. But all in all... This is about as close to a perfect set as I've seen!

      Thanks, I felt the same way! There will never be a PERFECT kit, as everyone has unique preferences, likes certain picks over others, or simply has a few custom tools they use, but this one comes REALLY close.

    Honestly I love their picks. Great shapes, great durability, great finish on both handles and tips. A few years ago I bought their original huge pick set and it was worth all the money. But it made me kind of sad that Multipick did not offer any slim picks, no Bogotas and no flat bar tension tools. So last year I decided to send them an email and tell them how great their stuff is but that I'd really like to see some thinner picks maybe a standard Bogota and the most important top of the keyway tension tools and that it would be great to add the Bogota and top of the keyway tension tools to their pick set or at least sell it as single picks / tension tools. Only like 2 days later I received an email from Multipick that they really appreciate my feedback and that they might come up with those tools in the future. Like two years later and I see Bill reviewing their new stuff. It's great to see that they really care about customer feedback!

    You often mention postal box tensioners and we've all heard of the postal hook but for the life of me I cannot figure out what locks these tools are used for. Everytime I search for a postal box lock I either get back cabinet style locks or kinda cool looking 3 and 4 pin locks with yale like keyways, never anything that would require a super deep hook or strange shaped tensioner. I'm so curious about this, I love interesting locks and by the looks of those tools they are probably very fun to pick too but I have no idea because I can't find them anywhere. Please help.

    Another great video from you. It's sort of timely because I beaten up all of my pics or broken them. I'm trying to be a little more patient and less aggressive when attacking my locks. I want to buy a quality kit or build one without all the less useful useful pics that a lot of manufacturers toss in to make it look like you're getting a great value for your dollar. Quality is Paramount. I like the handle to be either dipped or plastic. It would mean the world to me if you could build me the perfect kit around $100. I'm in the USA. I find myself using my pics on commercial door locks, padlocks and low to high end entry doors. I find myself cheating a little and using the Kronos, that thing is amazing. The only flaw in that tool are the pick inserts. They felt like they were made out of recycled Coke cans and didn't last me very long. That's an exaggeration and partly it's because I'm a little rough with the Kronos, I probably created some metal fatigue pretty quickly. As for the ticks that I can't seem to manipulate well, the city rake has provided me with no success. I do like the worms and Bogotas . I don't know if I've earned the right to even ask this of you since it's only my first month in the tribe if it's something you can put together without a lot of effort I would appreciate it since I'm ready to place an order. Cheers, Shawn

      Shawn,
      I don't sell anything or build custom kits, as that would take up most of my time if I did. However, I HAVE had some input in what picks should go into different kits whenever manufacturers contact me and ask. For example, UKBumpkeys asked for a list of picks that were in my kit (as well as other pickers), and their Praxis kit is VERY close to mine. Likewise, when Multipick was designing their dual gauge kit they asked for a photo of my kit, and later followed up with some clarification questions about details. I'm sure my kit is not the only one they looked at, but again, their final product is VERY close to what I use today. There IS no PERFECT kit. Every person has personal preferences about handles, length, pick tip selection and tension tools. I'd advise you to buy a high quality kit (your "foundation"), and add whatever customizations you need to make it perfect for YOU.

    • @eak125
      @eak125 5 років тому +1

      @@justinl9677 you'll have to put something on the handles to make them easier to hold. Unlike the Multipick which you can use right out of the box. I used plastidip and with several coats, it's lasted over a year without peeling.

      Stop by your local locksmith's shop & ask them about their scrap locks. A lot of them have a box of locks that have been replaced at apartment complexes or businesses & they'll sell them for the scrap metal price. Or post on FB asking friends for any padlocks they have that they've lost the keys for. eBay is also a great place to find some. Good luck & welcome to the tribe!

    ive always wondered why they would go to the effort of putting a unique serial number on each pick. besides giving out prizes, it seems like what it really might be used for is identifying the owner of a pick should law enforcement need to do so. if they were used in a crime and somehow left behind then they could figure out who's they were. of course, im sure it could be filed off.. still a little strange.

    so, i got a wafer lock on a broken door chain im want to pick to get it off my door (previous owner, never got the key) and potentially replace it someday, any ideas on some common house hold items i can use as a make shift tensioner and pick or rake? i have no skills and no money to spend on this and no power tools, probably the only useful tool i have are plyers and screwdrivers and a hammer.

    • @fredhenry101
      @fredhenry101 5 років тому +1

      Honestly, if you can't afford to order a $20 set, and you already don't have skills, your best bet is just remove it from the door entirely. Depending on how it's mounted you could:
      Unscrew it, if it's that easy
      Cut the chain if your neighbors have bolt cutters
      Or possibly pry the mount off the wall/door using the hammer, but I don't recommend that.
      Picking is really a specialty skill, and unless you are just an enthusiast or you want the lock for something, you're better off just removing it destructively and saving the effort of picking.

    • @Kotih
      @Kotih 5 років тому

      the chain is already cut, i just want to remove the part on the door which is only unmountable(screws) when unlocked, i dont want to damage the door trying to remove it by force, so the idea was to pick the lock so the latch on the chain falls out and unblocks the screws for the mount. its a weirdly complicated mount where the chain is attached to a plate that slides into a locked slot and the plate covers the screws

    As someone who's bought the deforest diamond picks separately in each gauge from Multipick, I find that they are too flimsy for any extended use. Even the .6mm (PN09 2018) has bent on me yet my Praxis Deforest of the same gauge is still going strong. The .4mm (V09 2018) bent in my leather case without being used. It's a flaw in the cut of the picks themselves. They're just too thin at the neck right behind the head. Just too little material. All my other picks from them have had no such issues (BOG08, BOG09 for example). Hopefully this is something fixed in the 2019 run but they look just as poorly designed in this video.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  5 років тому +1

      There is no question that these are more delicate than other profiles, but these are DESIGNED for Euro keyways and have thinner profiles out of necessity. When I first got these I routinely used them for "bullying" sessions, and ended up with bent picks like you. Once I realized they can't be used as pry bars, I reserve them for more delicate "finessing" in paracentric keyways. I find myself looking a difficult locks and asking myself "is opening this lock WORTH risking a broken pick?". Until we steal some alien technology and improve metallurgy, we have to work with what we have.

    I know I sound like a bumpkeys fan boy and I’m sure these are finished to a better standard and actually have handles, which you really notice after about five minutes of using one without but I do think multipick came at this one way too high.

      @@jdshenanigans9265 they're "reinventing" the disk detainer pick because they aren't happy with the ones on the market, because there are issues in the production that make them less useful or less versatile.
      That said, design changes do not constitute a reinvention. Sure, there are many kinds of wheel, but they all follow the same basic idea: round, axle through the center, rolls.
      Finally the reason there aren't a lot of new designs coming out is they aren't needed. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." These picks sell because they work. You could come up with a new, fancy design for a rake, but why would I pay you for that when a city rake does the same job just fine? Just a waste of money. Until locks undergo a drastic redesign that renders a standard hook obsolete there will be very few innovations in pick design because they aren't really necessary, we already have tools that work just fine.
