  • Once again I found myself on a motorcycle launch with [diplomatic voice] much older moto journos, and it got me thinking - is the traditional moto media literally dying?
Keen to know your thoughts in the comments below.

Same age as you and also a young parent mate so I totally get your point. The thing is that older people who have a lot of free time and money are going for moto media as they can produce consistently and successfully without distractions along their riding and other hobbies whereas a lot of younger people are simply swinging their leg over the saddle and riding without much concern for producing content. Besides who doesn't test ride if they have the option so whatever content they consume adds enthusiasm and relevance towards an informed decision but not really make up the entirety of it! In my personal case I see younger audiences love to consume the reviews from older people in moto media so they are also driving demand. I have oversimplified things of course, but that is the crux of it.

Back when i was your age (and younger) say the 90's i would go to the local Lotto/ magazine shop to get my copy of Performance bikes magazine religiously every month! Now i haven't read a magazine in years, it's all UA-cam videos now for me. And to be honest i prefer it that way. As long as you can get yourself a consistent flow of new models to test ride and video you might be able to make some cash doing it.

Yeah it's a bit tricky with my new job to have the time to test stuff on the regular but I'm doing my best to keep the channel ticking along. I actually have a backlog to get edited - just lacking a bit of free time currently.
I think I was mostly shocked that the traditional media is basically the same group of guys as 10 years ago minus the ones who have actually passed. There's nobody new coming in to take over - at least those getting invites to launches - and I think that might be detrimental to motorcycling as a whole in our part of the world
      .

You’re saying people are leaving traditional media behind because now UA-cam and influencers are what people turn to. Doesn’t that just mean traditional media has not adapted and kept up? I know when I had a UA-cam channel I asked the local dealers if I could borrow bikes for reviews they told me to go pound sand. Traditional media companies already have the contacts and resources but you’re saying UA-camrs are eating their lunch? Hmmm. I don’t see why traditional media couldn’t have a UA-cam presence along the lines of 44 Teeth. But I don’t think they want to, that’s the real issue. Just keep on doing what they are doing and all of a sudden their market has moved on. Oops!

Yep you could say that. I've been a member of the traditional local media for a decade now and at local launches there hasn't been anyone new come in who is younger than me in the last decade.
Kinda makes me think that the industry has a bit of a problem with representation don't you agree? The same could be said with traditional car journos - at least here in NZ. You can do both as you say 44 Teeth has done, but the guys doing the journalism either don't have the time or the basic skills to put a video together from what I have seen.

@@OnThrottle oh absolutely. Print media guys won’t have the skill set of 44 teeth, nor would
I expect them to. I can’t see why there couldn’t be some sort of partnership happen where the video guy(s) run a channel for the magazine

Traditional Moto Media: That all depends on how you interpret the term media. TV is downright horrible/90% commercials. Radio is non existent. To me those 2 are the traditional media & nothing else. That being said, then YES, it is dying and a pity. And as for what you're riding in this video, I have NO interest in these over expensive monstrosities called motorcycles whatsoever. Plus: wrong title for your video.
