    When you are thinking about moving to Las Vegas, it is important to sit back and take some time to think about the pros and cons of living in Las Vegas. I know it is difficult to assess from the outside because you don't live here yet. However, before you make the move, I want to provide you with a video of what I think the pros and cons are of living in Las Vegas.
    There are far more pros than cons about living in Las Vegas. Some of the most common positive things about living in Las Vegas have to do with personal finance. Here in Nevada we are one of only 7 states that do not have a state income tax at all. Nevada also has one of the lowest overall tax burdens among all 50 states in the U.S. Las Vegas also has a pretty low cost of living, especially when it is compared to many other major metropolitan areas. Those few factors alone can have a significant effect on your financial position.
    We also have been very blessed by mother nature here in Las Vegas. We are surrounded by gorgeous mountains, we have Lake Mead to do water sports, and we have Mount Charleston if you want to do any winter sports. We have a lot of open land for outdoor activities and getting exercise. When you begin living in Las Vegas you will see that being physically active and healthy is very popular.
    As far as the cons of living in Las Vegas, some people like to complain about the heat in the summer time. I don't think it's really THAT BAD. We have so much great weather throughout the year that two months of heat really is not much to complain about. For people with families there is commonly a concern about living in Las Vegas because of how poorly Nevada public schools are ranked. Fortunately, there are other options available for education your children other than the education that the government provides. We do have private school options, charter schools, and a sizable population of parents who decide to home school their kids instead of attending public schools. Some people also have concerns about the crime in Las Vegas. This notion that Las Vegas is a high crime is pretty unfounded, since a simple Google search of America's highest crime cities does not show Las Vegas in very many results, if at all. In Las Vegas we have FAR MORE good neighborhoods that are safe for families, children, and anybody else who wants to live here.

    Moved to Summerlin from the DC area and we LOVE IT! We're in our 60s and love everything Vegas has to offer and we don't gamble. The natural beauty of the surrounding areas are fantastic with short drives to the West Coast beaches, the Grand Canyon, ...
    No natural disasters, the weather is phenomenal (cooler outside of the city). And, we have the Golden Knights.
    Fix the school system (seriously) and you have the best city in the US to live in.

    I tell people all the time, if you've been to Vegas and "gambling, drinking, and sex" is all you took from it, then you truly have NOT made the best use of your time there, As soon as you even walk into baggage claim at McCarran, there's hundreds of billboards and tv monitors for Drais, , Blue Man Group, Grand Canyon Tours, etc.... Now I'm not saying Vegas should be everyones cup of tea, but if you didnt do any research on the place before you came out, and thus had a bad time thats on you. OMG it's hot? It is the desert afterall, dont come in the middle of friggin July if its a problem for you

      +Johnny Klebitz LOL. As a local you learn pretty quickly that the vast majority of people are incredibly ignorant about Vegas outside of the strip. When someone who only visits Vegas for the strip says "I love/hate Vegas" you really just take it with a grain of salt because their knowledge of anything outside of Las Vegas Blvd. is minimal at best

    the people in Vegas are so friendly, helpful and nice....much more so than a casual tourist or "outsider" would think. Almost like a small town type of friendly in some areas! That may seem unbelievable to some people, but I've found it to be true!

    I have a friend who lived in Vegas and had his own business, he and his brother decided to sell it and he moved back here to MN. He had his kids in private school there since the schools in the Vegas area apparently aren't that good. But after about 5 years here, he wishes he could go back to Vegas. Vegas seems to be built for the future, having healthy employment gain year to year and low crime.

    • @JacobslifeinVegas

      +arodgefan589 This area is expected to add another million people in the next 10 years. The national population grows at about 1% per year, but the Vegas area is growing at about 2% annually. There is a lot more growth in the future.

    I would like to live in Las Vegas because it’s the driest metro area in the United States and as far as I’m concerned: One day of rain per year is one too many. I would really love the lack of rain. Nothing more depressing than the sound of windshield wipers!!

    Used to live there as a kid.. Me and my wife stayed a few days on the strip a couple years ago, I couldn't believe how big the strip had gotten.. I used to live on the edge of town in an area called the lakes.. we had nothing but desert all the way to the mts. After looking at a satellite view of the neighborhood I couldn't believe they had developed all the way to the mountains, a little area called Summerline I think.. Living in Missouri we have alot of humidity but the heat of Vegas was worse.. Didn't brother me as a kid, loved the beatiful whether..

    Indeed southern Nevada has a lot more good points than bad. Not only does NV have no state income tax but it also has very low property taxes. And yes its hot but its a nice dry heat, I have lived in Louisiana, Florida, and Rhode Island and the north east, the summers there are actually more uncomfortable due to the high humidity and heat. I like the desert landscape also, its very unique. Nebraska, Delaware, and Ohio are just a couple states that are hardly scenic. Great Basin National Park has some of the most beautiful forests and mountains in the nation. Mt. Charleston is also gorgeous and near by. And also as far as bodies of water you have Lake Meade Recreational area, Lake Las Vegas, and also not to far to the south you have Laughlin on the Colorado River. A nice new neighborhood I have found out about recently is Winchester Nevada, which is a neighborhood in Las Vegas.

    • @JacobslifeinVegas
      @JacobslifeinVegas  8 років тому +2

      +FunkMastaMegaFlex Yes sir! There are a lot of well kept secrets out here in Southern Nevada. I didn't realize how popular it was for people who love outdoor activities until I got here, and saw that the geography we have gives plenty of options.

    • @FunkMastaMegaFlex
      @FunkMastaMegaFlex 8 років тому

      +JacobslifeinVegas It does indeed, also one think that I noticed that hasn't been talked about much for living in Las Vegas/Nevada, is how is health insurance handled. I believe all 50 states now offer a government health insurance plan, and if you move to the state how is easy it to obtain and get enrolled? I know in some states like Massachusetts and Rhode Island its actually pretty easy process compared the awkward slow programs their governments sponsor. This would be handy information for those moving to the state and do not have employment. Cuz like the rest of the nation I assume most people in Las Vegas/Nevada get health insurance/benefits through their employment.

    • @JacobslifeinVegas
      @JacobslifeinVegas  8 років тому +1

      Good point. This is the first year since I've lived here that I have not had to switch health insurance for one reason or another. You're right that a lot of people have it through their employer. That is one of the attractive reasons people choose to work in the casinos and hotels on the strip. A lot of them are union jobs, which include health coverage. Thank you for the suggestion.

    Good video! Thanks. My wife and I are considering moving to Las Vegas; I have been a couple of times and I like it. We are hispanic and have been living in US for about 4 years, we both are professionals and I work in the medical field. We live in Miami now, but we also lived in Orlando for six months.
    The company for what I work has office there in Vegas and I have been thinking to move there. So I can keep my job.
    The reasons to be thinking in doing that is that Miami is too expensive, there are tolls almost everywhere and the traffic is terrible.
    We rent a 2 bedrooms apt for 1600 and it's not that nice at all, but work for us because it's near my wife work. We have been thinking in buying a house but most of them cost more than 300 000 and in some areas like Doral may cost more than 500 000.
    We need something more affordable, that's why we are thinking in moving to Vegas.
    We also have an infant and we want to know more about daycares (costs and conditions) and also schools.
    Thanks again for the video.

    I have a question, if you don't mind. My partner and I are looking at Las Vegas to possibly move there in the near future. How is the area with getting produce? I don't mind if it is a little pricey, but is the quality good? Where we live now everything is shipped and either things are not ripe or are sold already rotten. I love fruit and veggies and worry with Las Vegas being in the desert it would be difficult to get them. I know farming areas are near by, but I want to make sure there is a decent selection & decent quality of foods.

    i lived in henderson from 2008 till 2014,6years ,lived in henderson by stephanie & wigwam,very nice area,small town feeling
    and u can drive to las vegas in 15 minutes,
    cost of living is much lower ,much lower than u can think,
    moved here with family,again i said earlier one of the cheapest places to live,school systems real good,
    i moved there as my finance company in dallas texas opened an office in henderson nv.
    after six months the company went through some major financial turmoil and decided to shut the office down
    one of my real close friend was working as a cab driver so he asked me if i would like to drive cab,i did it for a week and met a real nice host who was working at spearmint rhino in las vegas,he encouraged me to apply there,so i did got hired ,and i made almost 5 times more money than the cab or finance business,
    worked as a host in that club for like six months and then they promoted me as a assistant manager,made three times more money than working as a host but lot of stress so after one year ,one of the big poker player who became my friend as he use to visit the club frequently .and would drop more money in a night than i made in a week
    i went to wynn casino first time played poker,and got few lessons from him,and in a month i was making ten times more money playing poker rather than working as a assistant manager,

    great video! my hubby and i love living out here in las vegas!!! We are from Chicago we got sick of the crime, winters & segregated neighborhoods! Here in vegas we enjoy our lives We have so many options for our date nights, eating, fun places to explore and culture!!! We dont drink, smoke, dont do strip clubs or rarley gamble so we wont ever get cuaght up in the pitfalls of the dark side of vegas! We mind our business so making friends is harder but were good , we have each other. People are not as friendly here unless they are tourist& the crime seems to be getting worst! Las vegas is great we just wish some family were here!

    Hi Jacob. It is a random question. I just relocated to Henderson and I do not like the tap water out here. What kind of water do you drink and what water filter do you use? Do you use anything to convert hard water to soft? My skin gets itchy from hard water and my long hair gets out of control

    Hi Jacob, long time subscriber here. Always a pleasure to check in on your videos! We lived in Las Vegas years ago and now live in Phoenix. We love Arizona, but we also love visiting So. Nevada. A couple of quick questions for you...How do you feel about the Raiders possibly moving to LV? Did you follow them when you lived in San Jose? Also, how have you adapted to the wind there? Im sure you've had experience with wind living in Northern Cal, but the Vegas wind seems to cut right through you! Does it bother you much or have you adapted to it? Thanks again for your great channel and all the best to you! Rick

    • @JacobslifeinVegas
      @JacobslifeinVegas  8 років тому

      Having moved to Vegas from the bay area, I can say that I'm more familiar with the Raiders and their fan base than most people. With that being said, I'm less than enthusiastic about the possibility of the Raiders moving to Vegas lol. The wind here is a bit aggravating, but it was brutal in the SF area. In the bay area it's already cool, so the wind makes it feel even colder. You get some of that in the winter and spring in Vegas, but the wind in the summer usually feels nice.

      ***** I love both Phoenix & Las Vegas, but for slightly different reasons. Phoenix is in the Sonoran Desert which IMO is the most beautiful desert in the world. It is also a very clean, well manicured and maintained city in general. The weather is great if you don't mind the heat and the winters are more mild than Las Vegas. Also, the wind in Phoenix is WAY less than Vegas. The Vegas winds are brutal! Lots of amenities in Phx, pro sports, a myriad of things to do and all of the big city features. Now, Las Vegas is great too! I love the casinos, sports betting, poker etc! Incredible fun there and also the UNLV Rebels (Im an Alumnus). You can't go wrong either way! We have a place in Las Vegas too and love it there. Take care!

    • @nicholassgherzi3895
      @nicholassgherzi3895 7 років тому

      Cyrus992 The heat between Phoenix and Vegas is about the same.
      The Sonoran desert is definitely way more beautiful than the Mojave desert, no question about it.
      Traffic in Las Vegas sucks, it's horrible in my opinion. I've only been to Phoenix once, but from what I experienced it wasn't that bad.
      You have to remember, Vegas is a huge tourist city, you have people on the roads that don't know the area and that are from all over the world/country.
      You don't have that problem in Phoenix because it's not a huge tourist attraction, the only traffic your getting is from the locals.

    • @JacobslifeinVegas

      +Shikhar Kalsi It's not Silicon Valley, but that is one thing that Vegas (and the state of Nevada) is pushing more for. They are trying to diversify this economy more so it's not so reliant on tourism. Part of that effort is working to attract people in the tech sector. Tony Hseih of Zappos is face of the Downtown Project to help support small businesses, particularly in the start up world. Northern Nevada just got the Tesla plant last year, and this year North Las Vegas just got Faraday Future to start construction on their plant. It's definitely worth taking a deeper look to see what's available.

      Vegas is easy to transverse with surface streets. Tropicana, Flamingo, Desert Inn, and Sahara Ave and Charleston criss cross the city completely from East to West. Rainbow, Decatur, Eastern, etc do the same the other way.

I see that there are plenty decent looking apartments for a fraction of the price I'd pay in Florida but what about other expenses like utilities & cable? Also what about food grocery expenses? Also, what about the job market? Is there good opportunities available for the working class? & last but no least what are some of the best neighbors as far as safety? Like I said I'm a single mom raising a little girl so the safer the better lol. If anyone could answer these questions for me that would be awesome! Thank you

    I recently visited Vegas with thoughts of buying a retirement home. There are things to like; you can buy a home for $219,000., incredibly beautiful mountains, clouds and sky, sunshine, uncrowded expressways around town, ethnic diversity. But I'm sooo not attracted to the jumble of casinos and amusement-park atmosphere of the strip but, that's just me. I don't know what it would be like to never see woods again. I went to Lake Las Vegas and even that appeared to be a gimmicky project, emulating something on the order of an Italian fishing village huddled around a harbor. I felt a little like I was at at DisneyLand. Also, It was 109 degrees and spending any kind of time in the sun was out of the question...and that lasts for five months or more. I found prices to be as high as Los Angeles for dining, gas, hotel, property tax. In fact, the tax burden I saw had Nevada in the middle, not at the top (wallethub.com/edu/states-with-highest-lowest-tax-burden/20494/). A lot of the service workers seemed jaded too. If all the shopping, entertainment and dining is on the strip, I'd never go. It's congested and parking costs $. South Summerlin and Spring Valley were nice.
    But, the city on the whole has no shortage of cookie-cutter, economical housing developments.. W Spring Mountain Rd was my foray off the strip and it was lined with cheapo-looking businesses . I think overall, the city is a good value due to affordable housing in descent neighborhoods and no harsh winter. Its growth is a confirmation of its desirability. It's just not for me.

    I think you should have put a little more emphasis on how good our parks are in Las Vegas; incredibly well maintained tennis and basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, and lots of open space. Also, another financial benefit is higher wages than surrounding areas such as California, Phoenix and Utah, all of which have high costs of living. To me, the only downside of Las Vegas is the heat. This year we hit triple digit days in may and still there in September! But hey, Mount Charleston is just 30 minutes away to cool down. Great channel. Love the positivity.

      Lots of security jobs to be found. Basically ZERO film business. Just an occasional shoot for a movie or TV show with outside people who come and go.

    Quick question. Would you prefer Nevada to live in or Arizona. I know you like Vegas a lot but I'm just curious

      For one thing, when it's hot here, it's a dry heat, which is (in my opinion) better than the humid heat. Somedays (not many) it can be humid when it rains here in the summer, but other than that, it's dry.

      I'm north of Miami and I'm done with Florida weather and humidity. I hear there are good musician opportunities in Las Vegas!!

    Heat is not that big of a draw back as long as your AC or central air works. lol You think Las Vegas has heat, try Texas heat. Dallas, Austin and Houston Texas has the type of heat that as soon as you step outside you start sweating. States like Georgia has that Southern hot humid heat. I rather deal with dry heat than humid heat any day. At least Las Vegas doesn't have Tornadoes, I was born in the South and Tornado season was just a way of life. I used to live next to some guys that used to chase Tornadoes. Plus let's not forget Hurricane season which if you live on the East coast you have to deal with too. Give me dry desert heat over tornado warnings. lol Before i left the East Coast, I had a friend visit me from Cali and he never experienced any natural disaster other than a Earth Quake. So he was freaking out seeing the words Tornado watch orTornado warning pop up on my TV 5 times in one month. lol

      +MrGrownman455 Hahaha. The only "warnings" we get out here in Vegas are for the flash floods when we get into monsoon season in the summer. I'll still take that over hurricanes, tornadoes, sweltering humidity, and earthquakes any day!

      MrGrownman455, I don't start sweating right away even in 140 F, so not sure I believe you.
