Lee Roy Van Dyke was an auctioneer before a singer he wrote this song about his cousin who is also an auctioneer. Lee Roy pursued both careers. He had another hit Walk On By.
when I was a child, I used to go with my Dad to the auction to watch him buy livestock. I would marvel not only at the auctioneers but at the farmers and ranchers who could understand him well enough to know when to bid. My Dad said it was just someting you learned after hearing it enough.
yea, me too...that's why I came and watched the video. I'm 55 so it was only 5 years old when I came along and my parents were old country fans .Being the youngest of 8 I am fortunate to have grown up listening to everything from 30s n 40s on via my older siblings n parents.
That song brings back a lot of great memories. My dad was a farmer and our entertainment was was going to farm auctions. When I was 5 years old we went to one where everything including the farm was up for sale. After being there for hours I was really tired and I tugged on my mom's dress to get her attention and asked, "When are we going home?" She gave a big sigh and said, "We are home." My dad had made a split second decision and bought the farm.
What a great story! And with a great surprise ending. Like a lot of good country songs, back when country music was actually still being made, that is.
Thank You so very much for this. You're so kind. I've loved Leroy van Dyke since 1962 - he might have been my first crush.....we went to the Opry and my heart was aflutter!!! LOL!! So Handsome, He also recorded a song popular in the UK also, it was "Walk on By"! Again, Thank you for taking my request, you're the best! :)
Leroy once quipped "Well I've only had two hit songs and The Auctioneer was the only one I wrote", His other hit song was "Walk on By", written by Kendall Hayes.
Nope, I couldn't sing along with Leroy either😞 He co-wrote this song about his cousin, Ray Sims, who is in the auctioneers hall of fame. Check out another big hit of his-Just Walk On By. Leroy was born Oct 4, 1929 in Missouri and still living, can you believe it?! Such a fun reaction, Craig, thank you❤
As a child, I heard this song and thought if I was that fast talking cuz my family literally had to tell people what I said ALL of the time growing up lol 🤣 Love it! 😍
I accompanied my dad to livestock auctions when I was a wee little girl. I loved listening to the auctioneer! I loved it more when dad had horses he was selling because he would let me ride them in the auction ring to show how easy they were to ride. When we had an exceptionally big horse, dad would hand me the lead and let me take the horse into the ring to show that they were so well trained that a four yr old little girl could handle them. My dad often said that I got an extra few bucks for the horses when I rode/led them in the ring. He'd buy me a bottle of Coke as a reward on the drive home!
Leroy wrote this song while he was stationed in Korea. While not an auctioneer himself, the song was written about his cousin Ray Sims who wound up in the National Auctioneers Hall of Fame as an outstanding caller. It sounds like the genes for such a talent runs in the family.
Yes it certainly looked like they were all having fun doing this one. My sister and I went to a concert in Milwaukee, WI, where Leroy Van Duke, Buck Owens and the Buckaroos and other Country singers were performing. It was a lot of fun.
Leroy is great, this one is special. He is a real Auctioneer. Love your first look, Auctioneers are Marvelous to listen to. He you can understand. There's another song you need to hear. I've Been Everywhere Man. Missouri has one of the top school for Auctioneers to learn
Leroy Van Dyke has been one of my favorite singers forever. You should also listen to Hank Snow singing "I've been everywhere". I don't know how the hell he remembers all of the towns in that song.
We had a family friend who grew up on a farm and learned to do auctioneering. We’d ask him to do it now and then for the fun of it. He was amazing to listen to.
This song always brings me back to good childhood memories. A lot of my family worked at a local auto auction when I was a kid so I grew up listening to auctioneers.
I can barely speak at a normal speed without being tongue tied half the time! 😆 It reminds me of the guy that did the Micro Machine toy commercials in the 80's.
So glad you did this reaction! Watching your enjoyment made my face hurt! I loved Leroy Van Dyke, but I had completely forgotten about this fun masterpiece! I could NEVER do anything this fast! I'm a perfectionist so my brain has to meticulously arrange everything before I do anything! Home Free does a John Michael Montgomery cover of "Sold" which is fun & so is John's version! I can actually sing it! 😊
Now this is an oldie but goodie....absolutely love it! Believe it or not my husband and I have danced to this song many times over the years! It is a classic!
I'd love to hear Home Free take this one on! They did an auction type song where dates were being auctioned off to the ladies - they were the returns being auctioned off. You'd love it! I've just discovered you and have been catching up with what you're covering. I'm 74 so please don't be offended when l say l love your accent and especially those blue eyes. Keep up the good work. It's fun to catch your opinion and l couldn't agree more!
I'm so glad you did a reaction to this one as it's one of my favorite. If you think that is fast, then I'd like to suggest Hank Snow (another icon, but a Canadian one who made his mark in the States) as he sings I've been everywhere. I still can't understand all the places he's been but you have to listen and do a reaction to it. Johnny Cash does it too, but I find Hank does it faster as you can see the speed cranking up. I've included the link with Hank singing it live but with the lyrics, so you can follow as it gets fast. ua-cam.com/video/_oqzy8HU6dQ/v-deo.html&start_radio=1 Thanks for listening and reacting to this one. Love from Canada.
Country auctioneers in the United States actually do speak that fast during an auction and you really need to check out John Michael Montgomery song “Sold”
Leroy Van Dyke is from the same area as myself, near Sedalia Missouri. About 20 years ago I met him at a charity auction. I won the bid on a plate of chocolate chip cookies, Mr. Van Dyke handed them to me & I shook his hand.
First time I heard this was in a bar in Spain. I was behind the bar and this Irish guy called Liam Turner sang this it was amazing and that was 23 years ago he's still a great friend and he helps run the Irish centre in Newcastle as well as playing. He's an amazing guy so If ever in Newcastle check him out. He's on UA-cam too
It is a blast from my past. No I couldn't and still cant get the auctioneer rhythmic patter even at a moderate pace. I suspect that no other singer could do it either. Only one person could and did successfully perform it.
Another favorite of mine. We had a young man at my granddaughter's high school who was in her Theatre class. They did a variety show and he sang this song. He was so perfect it made me cry. That young man's name is Nicholas Houchin.
I remember in 6th grade, there was 3 girls arguing about who the fastest rapper in the world was. I showed them this song Me and my brothers play music. We have a friend that can sing this and we play it every chance we get
Hank Snow had a song called "I've Been Everywhere" which both Johnny Cash and Kacey Musgrave did a cover of in the song he talks about everywhere he has been , it's almost as fast as this one
John Michael Montgomery has a great boot kickin' song called Sold. It's not as fast but just as fun. He's also got a great catalogue of songs under his belt that you have yet to delve into
Been one of my favorite songs since I was a kid. If you want to hear another VERY entertaining song, check out Leroy Troy performing Ghost Chickens In The Sky on the Marty Stuart Show. He has the entire band, including Marty Stuart, nearly rolling on the floor in fits of laughter!
Legendary singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot did a cover of this song. He rarely records any covers so that's a statement to the quality of this song. Check out GL's version.
Leroy used to be a real auctioneer and that is why he can do the patter. I have only been to one auction in the UK where there was a auctioneer who did it like this. It is a real skill.
I used to sing Gilbert and Sullivan with a choir, you know, the really fast patter songs, and even I can't keep up with this. Probably the only other recording artist I know of who could would be Joey Levine, the lead singer of a band called Reunion, which recordrd a single called "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)." If you don't know that one, give it a listen. If you do other country songs, you should try "One Piece at a Time" by Johnny Cash, if you don't already know it.
This is wonderful!! lol I've never seen this before...and he does an amazing job of an auctioneer. 😂🤗💖 Here's another artist to check out, if interested. "Gene Watson - Farwell Party LIVE"
I grew,up 1 of 8 kids. My dad would buy cheap stuff at auctions,. He would sell the medal, for cash to suppliment our farm. We saw many accushioneers. Back them all were as good as the, videos.
You remarked about the blurry image because of the age of the video. In 1962, videotape didn't exist. This is a kinescope, which was a black/white movie, usually 16mm, sometimes 35mm, of live TV broadcasts for a record of the performance as a document, not to be re-broadcast. The lighting was for TV, not film recording, but the idea was just to keep a copy of the performance, no regard for clarity or artistic merit. Your reactions are among my favorites of any reactors!
Lee Roy Van Dyke was an auctioneer before a singer he wrote this song about his cousin who is also an auctioneer. Lee Roy pursued both careers. He had another hit Walk On By.
John Michael Montgomery has a song called Sold, from the early 90s. He doesn't get this fast, but it's a fun song.
Facts, I can keep up with JMM but I'm still working on keeping up with ole Leroy
And Home Free does a cover of it that is quite entertaining.
Not to mention the music video's a good time 😂
when I was a child, I used to go with my Dad to the auction to watch him buy livestock. I would marvel not only at the auctioneers but at the farmers and ranchers who could understand him well enough to know when to bid. My Dad said it was just someting you learned after hearing it enough.
As an ex-farmers daughter I love listen to auctioneers. This was really good.
there is nothing like going to an auction and listening to a good Auctioneer.
I remember hearing this song as a child. I was fascinated by how fast he could sing this too.
yea, me too...that's why I came and watched the video. I'm 55 so it was only 5 years old when I came along and my parents were old country fans .Being the youngest of 8 I am fortunate to have grown up listening to everything from 30s n 40s on via my older siblings n parents.
I've always found Auctioneers to be very entertaining. Quite a talent. Loved this song as a kid. Great reaction. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Great songof his.

I hope it went well and your mom and you had a good life on that farm and your dad
@biancamoore413 Thank you. It was a great life, and fortunately, my mom was very good at adapting to whatever life sent her way.
I heard this song when I was young child, and I'm 54 now. So many great songs and artists from that time frame.
Great classic! Thanks for reacting to it!
Thank You so very much for this. You're so kind. I've loved Leroy van Dyke since 1962 - he might have been my first crush.....we went to the Opry and my heart was aflutter!!! LOL!! Auctioning is an art form. You either have it or you don't.
Oh my goodness, I was so excited to hear this song. I listened to it as a child, brought back quite a few memories, lol, thank you.
Leroy once quipped "Well I've only had two hit songs and The Auctioneer was the only one I wrote", His other hit song was "Walk on By", written by Kendall Hayes.
I've always loved listening to a good auctioneer. I always looked forward to going to the livestock auctions with my uncle.
Oh wow, now there's a blast from the past! I remember as a child being facinated by this amazing song.
Nope, I couldn't sing along with Leroy either😞

"Just Walk On By" is a great song!
@@pinky2245 Definitely!!
@@pinky2245 loved it. His voice was very recognizable. One of the best!!!!
One of my dad's favorite songs! A great song! Brings back memories!
Yes he was a real auctioneer too.
As a child, I heard this song and thought if I was that fast talking cuz my family literally had to tell people what I said ALL of the time growing up lol 🤣 Love it! 😍
Leroy Van Dyke was simply awesome! I had completely forgotten about this song until now (3-13-23)! Thank you!

I knew your jaw was going to hit the floor the second he got started. I grew up listening to this guy.
Playing guitar and singing is hard but playing guitar while auctioning is another level of talent
Leroy is great, this one is special. He is a real Auctioneer.
Love your first look, Auctioneers are Marvelous to listen to. He you can understand.
There's another song you need to hear.
I've Been Everywhere Man.

My hubby used to sing this song all the time!!
This song makes me smile :) Throws me back to childhood and going to livestock auctions.
I am old enough to remember this song. I was fascinated by the auctioneers fast pace talking. Brings back alot of memories! Thanks!
I remember this from when I was a little girl. Thanks for sharing a very old memory for me.
I first intend to this as a lad about 60 years ago and still love it.
I remember going with my Mom to auctions growing up. It was always so fun and entertaining even if we didn't buy anything. Great memories.

Yep, I've heard them.
One I haven't heard in a long time. A fun song. Another really good song that kind of talks is Don Williams 'I Believe in You' Smoothe and beautiful.
I’ve never heard this song before. I’m in agreement with you, one of the best
Here is a oldie but goodie Roger Miller King of the Road..
Takes me back to when I was growing up. I used to ride horses through Auctions.
Thank you for introducing this to me. Great comments 👍
Leroy Van Dyke is from the same area as myself, near Sedalia Missouri. About 20 years ago I met him at a charity auction. I won the bid on a plate of chocolate chip cookies, Mr. Van Dyke handed them to me & I shook his hand.
Yes, Mr Van Dyke was an auctioneer. That's how he could rattle it off so quickly and so well. Gordon Lightfoot did a cover of it.
My dad was auctioneer and he could sing this song perfectly. : )
There is a competition every year for auctioneers and I have had the pleasure of listening to a couple past winners

Leroy is an actioneer and is member of the National Association of Auctioneers Hall of Fame.
Had never heard it before, but love it.
I've never heard this before either..I would have tripped over my tongue. My goodness 😂😂
Leroy Van Dyke had another hit with "Walk On By"
Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
We attend livestock auctions pretty regularly and this is perfectly clear to me. We live attending estate auctions. It's just fun and interesting.
I am a Auctioneer.. you made me laugh 🤣❤️
He wrote that song in Korea when he was a special agent in the US army counter intelligence Corps and its based on his cousin

Auctions are fun! You do get the rhythm pretty quickly but if you’re not careful, you’ll get caught up in the competition and spend too much. 😉😂
Such a fun song!

Both him and his brother were professional auctioneers

You'd here that many a farm auction and livestock auction barn. It's a language in its self.
You mentioned you loved Leroy's voice.
Please react to his Walk On By.
