It's not about the whiskey, it's the people you share it with!
#bourbon #whiskey #whiskeytube
I was born and raised in Monongahela! Home of the Whiskey Rebellion. And you are saying it correctly. Most people pronounce it as MonongaHAYla, which is wrong.
The way you described the A Overholt reminds me of Middlewest Ported Pumpernickel Rye. Rye toast, orange marmalade and berries. I’ll need to pick this one up!
I picked up the Overholt about a month ago at my local liquor store in Pennsylvania. I loved it and was thrilled with the reasonable price. So glad you were able to finally review it- I think you're one of the first. Cheers!
Just cracked my A Overholt. To me, the Malted Barley actually takes the front seat. Maybe it needs to open up, but I didn’t get any spice or cinnamon. Floral definitely, but primarily malt.
I’m into bold flavors and I believe the A Overholt would be right up my alley. I’m a big fan of the Old Overholt bottles and I’m looking for a James Pepper decanter. As a rye drinker I’m sure I’d appreciate this bottle. Thanks for the review. Enjoy!!
A few of us even place A. Overholt above the Old Overholt 10yr. Plus it's $40, at least here in PA. It 95 proof so enough proof for most whiskey drinkers, but not hot enough to overpower the deep rich flavors. IMO this is a grand slam home run in every area.
I really appreciate this breakdown, especially of the A Overholt
Jason, I really appreciate your reviews. I love the history and the details you bring into your reviews! Great job!
And thanks for the heads up on this Old Overholt…will pick it up when i see it. Cheers 🥃
Nice review! I picked a Michters BS up at BevMo yesterday for 130.00 it’s really nice but I kind of like my 2023 10yr a little bit more.
Definitely been looking forward to hearing a review on both of these bottles. Cheers
I had a bit of luck today and was able to purchase the Michter’s BP Rye. I can’t wait to give it a try, thanks for the review!
We just saw the A. Overholt Tuesday in Kentucky. I’d never heard of it and passed. I wish I’d seen this review earlier and I might have picked it up.
That A Overholt marketing is on point. Funny you should say that about the cap, I thought it was a screw cap up until you said that it’s a cork.
Of course with Jim Beam, price is great! I do wish the proof was a little higher, like 100-105 would have been great. But I’m just being picky. 😆
Maybe they'll eventually release an older, higher proof version like they did with Old Overholt.
Michters can be hit or miss , but the barrel strength rye always does well for me. I'll try to get multiples of these. Thanks for review.
Love this Michters!! Cheers
Looking forward to finding that A. Overholt!! The flavor profile and price point seems like it might be fun to use it in cocktails. 🥃
I love the Michters!!
I love me some A Overholt. It's $40 here in PA and IMO a banger bottle. It's so approachable and still true to a rye whiskey. I'm more a PA rye guy than those 51% rye "bourbon" man's ryes. If you can get your hands on Stoll and Wolfe from PA, I'd love to hear your review. Specifically the Rosen Rye and their SB Rye. Rosen being a throwback grain and their Single Barrel being so gosh darn delicious now that the are aging longer. I think they only ship those in PA though. Stoll being Dick Stoll (RIP), last master distiller of Michter's in PA. If you want some History. My fav local Distillery.
I don’t like a sweet single malt scotch, which is my preferred whisky, but I do enjoy this Bourbbn quite a bit. I usually go for a Woodford Reserve. Great thoughts Jason! Good luck with getting 100, 000 subs!
Next Single Barrel Rye pick needs to be named Friggin’ Tulips
I picked up both these bottles. Michter’s is saying the 2024 Barrel Strength Rye is something special. Have a line on a 2nd bottle at MSRP. 🥃
I'm with you on the Michter's barrel strength rye. so damn delicous.
Old overholt 100 proof bottle and bond. Your best buy.
I was fortunate to have a buddy bring me back some Old Overholt 114 back from KY. Good stuff! Decent price.
I'm curious to try this A. Overholt with its completely different mash bill from the Old Overholt lineup.
I really wish they would write in the proof so you could read it. My only complaint with the bottle!
Tough call on the M10YR vs. MBSR! I like the 10 a little better because the flavors are more subtle and feel like Michter’s puts more effort into getting their taste.
I just went head to head with the new release of barrel strength Rye, and last springs Michters 10 Rye. Very close competition. Half my tasters preferred one and the other half the other.
Grew up in Pittsburgh where the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers come together to form the Ohio. NOBODY says Monongahela. It's The Mon. Ain't got time to say Monongahela. LOL
Really interested in trying that A Overholt.
I only got to compare Michers 10 year vs barrel proof rye once and the 10 year won but they are all single barrels so the tables could turn every time. But if you're pouring I'm down with trying again.
Barrell strength over the 10 for me all day, at least based on the last release of each.
I would love to find a Barrel Proof Mitcher’s Rye
Went to one of my go to spots and the owner asked if I wanted a sample of the Michters Barrel Strength and really enjoyed it so I got a bundle deal of the Barrel Strength plus 3 of the regular bottles (Regular Small Batch, Sour Mash and American) for $230 plus theft. I'm a fan of Michters now! Need to try the 10yr and Toasted Rye next!
Jason, do I like sweet or spicy ryes? YES!
Two triple bass ideas came to mind:
A Overholt, New Riff Malted Rye, New Riff Balboa Rye
Michter's Barrel Strength Rye, Wilderness Trail Single Barrel Rye, Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Rye
This year’s Michters Barrel Strength is delicious! Might be neck and neck with the 10 yr
It would be good to compare A Overholt with Bulleit Rye.
Would be interested to hear your comparison to Dads Hat. I don’t know the Mashbill for the dads hat, but heard it’s funky.
I grabbed two bottles of the Michter’s.
Beautiful Bottle
Thanks for saying monongahela perfectly so many times! Hope to find it to try!
I just got the Michter’s BS Rye but I need a second bottle. I still have the 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022 and now 2024…
I definitely enjoy the 10yr, but i really enjoy the BS. Although I have only had a sample of the Michters BS, still hunting a bottle. Definitely high on my wish list!
They should release more barrel strength. I've never seen it on the shelf. It will obviously sell better than the lower proof that just sits around. Hopefully they've increased production for future demand.
Would like both the floral notes is not my cup of tea but still want a bottle especially the price
Perfect timing I picked this overholt up in pa and could find nothing on it not even on beam website. Not big fan will be a one abd done. I'll stick with the overholt 114 for the money
Great review and can we get a triple bass of OF 1897, Ben Holiday BiB and Heaven Hill BiB
Looking for either of them in NC!
This comment aged well, Got both these bottles over the weekend! The Overholt is interesting, came back to listen to your thoughts again and it's spot on, certainly a different taste than I've had. Haven't popped the Michter's yet but excited to pop that one as well!
Have a 21 and 22 MBSR. Love them, but my Peerless rye sib beat it in a blind.
Got mine at Binny’s for $34.99. Score!
When was that? It's $39.99 now.
@@xiamengbaby it was right when it dropped I went on a Saturday and it was on the allocation counter.
@@barrelvinewhiskeyandwine I'm always a day late and a dollar short. 😄
Day day out would take a michter’s barrel proof try rye but when you get one of the 10 yrs rye barrels the heaven open and you can not beat them. Just never know with the ten yr offerings.
I bought both and enjoy both!
I wonder how the Overholt compares to Pennsylvania ryes like Dad's Hat?
I would like to try and find a michter’s
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
If you want to try a great Monongahela style, Dad’s Hat.
I had a chance to buy the michters for $115 but passed. Im not a big fan of michters. The lower proof kinda kills it for me, eventhough i dont mind some 90-115 proof whiskeys, like the green river bourbon i just got. I have the last toasted sour mash and the toasted rye barrel strength, but they dont do it for me. They tend to be bit too muted for me. I just seen the a overholt, sounds interesting.
Which one would you prefer the A Overholt or the 10 year cask strength?
Probably the 10 year
How does the Michter's Barrel Stength Rye compare to their Toasted Barrel Rye?
Does anyone actually know what the Booker's Rye mash bill was?
Sounds like you may have got a bottle from a barrel that likely went to Illinois. I have 24B0874. Sounds like same barrel???
Might be. I got it from Michters actually
I am pro Michter's whatever of the two ryes I can find!
I like a nice spice rye! Your Rare Character rye pick was the best!
So i am starting to explore ryes...i did not like thomas handy rye at all but i like regular michters rye, bulliet rye, and even jack daniels sigle barrel barrel proof rye. Where should i go next. Pikesville rye is on my list
Old Forester Rye is pretty tasty for a sub $30 bottle, with its 65% rye, 20% malted barley, 15 % corn mash bill.
I like New Riff 6 year malted rye a lot. About $70.
Can't go wrong with Pikesville.
A lot of people like Rittenhouse bottled in bond, though I don't care for it much.
I do like Knob Creek 7 year rye as well as their single barrel ryes. I believe Knob Creek is a "barely legal" rye, whereas Bulleit is a 95% rye rye.
I like Dickel rye ok, which like Bulleit, is a 90 proof, 95% rye also sourced from MGP, but is then filtered through Maple charcoal (Tennessee Lincoln County process). Around $25.
@@xiamengbaby thank you for the awesome information! Sounds like I just need to dedicate some pours at the bar for ryes
@brettmchan2855 I forgot to mention Wild Turkey makes some decent and popular rye whiskey. The 101 rye is only $25 or so. The Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is a popular bottle, though much more pricey (around $60) and higher proof. Wild Turkey also has the Russell's Reserve 6 year 90 proof rye and the Russell's Reserve 102 proof single barrel rye. I'd start with the 101 to see if you like the profile. If you like that, then try the Rare Breed for a higher proof, somewhat older profile. The Russell's ryes are ok but not worth it, in my opinion, though I like the Russell's bourbons.
There's a lot of good value whiskeys (rye and bourbon) from the bigger distilleries to try before getting into all the pricey craft stuff. Sorry if I'm telling you stuff you already know.
@xiamengbaby your good I really appreciate it! I think I need to just make a conscious decision when I go out that I am going to TRY RYES. When I find myself at a place that has a large selection I stick to bourbon because I know I really enjoy it.
How does the Overholt compare to Dad's Hat though?!?!
Not nearly as spicy as Dads Hat
@@TheMashandDrum I LOVE Dad's Hat. It's so unique amongst ryes.
Peerless pick versus mitchers double bass
#FreakingTulips 😂😂😂
#FrigginTulips 😂
Did Michters distill this one?
I think so yes. Could've been contract distilled. But these are your big enough where it most likely was distilled by them.
I'm on the hunt for anything overholt. (Not a lot here in Alaska) But. As a yinzer by birth. Youre still saying it wrong. Close thou. Change it to hey-la(hay-la) Not hee-la. Should be some good yinzer UA-cam videos on pronunciation. I applaud your effort to get it "right". All love. Cheers from ak, from a yinzer whose pops is buried in the national cemetery outside of Pittsburgh(which happens to be at the site of the whiskey rebellion) there's an idea for a future video for ya.
Someone else from there commented above that your pronunciation with the hay-la is wrong, and his was right. 🤷♂️
This new A Overholt is a different rye mash bill from the Old Overholt lineup. The Old Overholt is a barely legal rye 51%? and probably 30-something % corn. Same as Knob Creek rye. The A Overholt shown here is 80% rye 0% corn and 20% malted barley.. Probably tastes like a completely different whiskey from the Old Overholts. Though I do like the Old Overholt 114, which I was fortunate to have a friend bring me back from KY.

It is a straight rye. Why would it have a high corn mash bill?
Straight rye must at least be 51% rye.
A Kentucky style rye might have 35% corn, or more or less, which is high corn for a rye whiskey mash bill. Indiana rye whiskey is typically 95% rye and 0% corn, and the Pennsylvania rye whiskey is 80% rye and 20% malted barley, so also no corn.
@@xiamengbaby
I'm not saying that it "might".
For a bottle's label to say "Straight Rye Whiskey", it must have at least 51% Rye.
And yes, there's 49% remaining for other grains, such as corn.
Similarly, for a bottle's label to say "Straight Bourbon Whiskey", it must be made with 51% corn (at least).
And yes, there are others with much higher percentages of Rye, such as WhistlePig.
Why this one (mbsr) over the Michters 10 years rye? The proof?…the flavors???…
Most like the proof. Although this years 10 year rye recently won a blind I did.
Pro barrel strength.
I found Barrel strength and toasted rye more flavorful than 10 yr.
hashtag jokes are so 2023
just joking man. I wanna try the Overholt! Finally an interesting release I can afford!
Jerusalem Tulip WHAT?!? Oh that’s right you don’t know shit about flowers.
This is to help with algorithm. Stop mixing stuff!
Why? Its always fun to blend.
2024 mbsr cost the stores 100, so your lucky to see it at 140ish, one of my favs
