The year is 1908. Teddy Roosevelt wins the election in a landslide, one of the biggest in American history. And as black gold flows over Kentucky all the way down to Louisiana, Standard Oil starts overreaching. Ida Tarbell goes down to help catalog the way Standard Oil circumvented anti-trust laws but this time, she has the government behind her. James Rudolph Garfield, Roosevelt's Secretary of Interior, was following Ida Tarbell's reporting and finally, there's enough to drag Standard before the courts. But will it be enough to break up these gigantic titans? Or is Teddy going to need something a little stronger?

The amazing thing was that both Roosevelts were very wealthy people from wealthy families. They were the last people you'd expect to be champions of the poor and middle class. Rockefeller: But... I donated money to you campaign?

How much money would 29,240,000 be in today's money?
It's hard to tell exactly, because of differences in both inflation and purchasing power. It looks like it's something between $680 million (only taking inflation into account) and $24 billion (considering it as an equal fraction of the country's GDP). $4 billion would be my best guess, as the equivalent wages of all unskilled labor employed by Standard Oil.

I'm a little confused, how did breaking up Standard lead to an increase in its stock price? You would think that being reduced to 1/34 of what you were would have the exact opposite effect.
The unintended consequence of breaking up standard oil is that by splitting the company, each company could pursue its own way and therefore spread better than if they were unified.
Also Rockefeller still owned massive amounts of shares on every company so you got that.
@@jeffmates1619 So basically the individual companies were able to grow their own businesses more efficiently because they were not as weighted down by the greater corporate bureaucracy which was necessitated by Standard's sheer size, with Rockefeller still wielding massive influence in those individual companies they largely avoided getting in the way of each other's growth, and as a result they were able to earn greater profits collectively than they were while they were all part of Standard thus the increased stock price?

It's kinda infuriating that Teddy supported taking money from corporations because he was so adamant about honor.
Like, yeah, you're moralistic enough not to bow to them in return for money, but to allow the corruption of lobbying to continue is still bad because not everyone would be as moral as you. If it's not illegal and it's paying money, it's easy for politicians to just jump into bed with these businesses, as they then went on to do.
