Policing London - The Bow Street Runners - Extra History - Part 3

- 📜 History of Policing London: The Bow Street Runners - Henry Fielding was a dangerous man... with a pen. He had a razor-sharp wit and created the page-turner novel, but that's not what we want to focus on here. Because Henry Fielding is also responsible for assembling London's first organized police force. The Bow Street Runners were inspired by Wilde's operation just... not corrupt. But Fielding quickly found that in London's justice system, corruption was the assumed default, not the exception. He certainly had his work cut out for him!

Henry Fielding - Everything Wilde did but you know... without the whole... being morally bankrupt bit.
Yeehaw
Yes
You say morally bankrupt, we say fun loving
*Kicks down door* I'm back, baby!
@@robertwalpole360 YO YO YO HELLO Y'ALL IT'S WALPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE! (Eat your heart, Guthrum!)
"Robert Walpole, who's exploits you might be familiar with."
I swear, ive never seen this man before in my life, officer.
I swear, under oath, I have never had any relations with Robert Walpole.
I've never been with Walpole I've never got anywhere near Robert Walpole.
I did not have seksual relashuns with that waman
Your honour, I have never lived or gone to the UK at all. So I never even heard of this Walpole you see sir.
You are all guilty of conspiracy of NOT having seen the episode of South Sea Company. The penance? UTTER AND HORRIBLE DOOM!
I hadn't realized that *being hit with a warrant* was ever done literally
the more you know
You’ve been hit by, you’ve been struck by, you've been struck by a smooth warrant.
Humans nothing was a joke back then.
I've got that beat; I've never even heard the phrase.
It's probably warranted though.
"Because unlike justice, John Fielding was blind"
Holy shit why did that give me goosebumps
Because a man without vision had more vision than others.
i know this is 2 years later, but it's like justice, not unlike
It was “ LIKE justice, jhon fielding was blind” you prob mis heard it
That plot twist at the end
PokaDeJoka that John Fielding was blind
Imagine being caught by a blind cop, how embarassing is that?
How did he write novels if he was blind?
Supernoxus John was the blind one, not Henry.
@@Supernoxus Famously, Milton was blind by the time Paradise Lost was finished. (Although his method of writing was kind of terrible as if involved forcing his daughters - whom he didn't think worthy of a real education due to being women - to write for him.
“Because like justice, John Fielding... was blind”
Me: *spits out tea*
You can't escape Walpole. He always in that dark corner.
sometimes he whispers to me at night; trying to sell me shares in some southsea venture or another
He's not even hidden this time...
@@izzypanda9517 wait. This time?!?!
@@skyjoe55 Wapole is in everything. ;)

Seriously, who could hate me?
To meny to be onest
No one
No one would hate you but rather like to joke about u
John Blunt comes to mind
Blunt
"Because like justice, john fielding, was blind" Whaaaaaaaaat?
this is saying the judicial law of that time was absolutely corrupt, unmanageable, untrustworthy and would pay bribes for others to do thing THEY wouldn't.
@@zacharytang3840 Plus dude was blind, like literally dude was blind. And the phrase "justice is blind" means that justice doesn't see your social status, race, age, economic situation. It's an ideal the justice system is expected to uphold.
Toaster of Doom, I can think of a few nations that caused “Ol’ Fielding to roll over in his grave.
Casually throwing in that dude was FUCKING BLIND at the end was a masterstroke.
Daredevil intensifies
@@toasterofdoom9629
yup back here in a year lol
anyways
i think 'justice is blind' applies to modern day politics. What the hell is happening in the United States???
(I'm from Asia)
Fun Fact: Britain still has "Special Constables", police officers who are part time and expected to have other jobs within the community. This gives the Police more officers when they need them, but also ensures that a wider cross-section of the community is represented in law enforcement.
Most places have that. They're normally just called part time or reserves. Special Constables is a way cooler title though. My local sherrifs even have "volunteer" deputies. Usually it's just officers fresh out of the acadamey looking to get something on their resume while they finish any schooling they have left, but there is also so retired officers who volunteer just to stay an active part of the community.
Worked great for a friend of mine. He was able to get by with his benefits from being a veteran with a part time job, finished school, and had enough practical experience to get a job as soon as his finished college.
2 years of hell though. 1 job, 1 unpaid job, and school all at the same time.
So basically John Fielding was British Daredevil! Well let's compare:
Both work with the law
Both are blind
Both seek justice
Both are BADASS!
I swear if EH does NOT make John Fielding wear Daredevil's costume, I'm so gonna riot at the next episode!
Yes
Your riot will be broken up by Fielding's constables
@@Windona I'm rioting for his sake, not against him!
@@MALEMization But like John Fielding, Justice is blind.
At this point Robert Walpole is to Extra History what Stan Lee was to the MCU, you just know he's gonna show up and some point
Any single one of these videos in the series would be enough to justify a full cinematic production.
Thief-Taker. Silver Tongue. The Judge of Bow Street.
I would certainly endorse something like that.
London police cinematic universe
A full side series of assassins creed

Next week on Extra History: The Real-Life Daredevil.
Tell me I'm not the only one who immediately thought that.
Justice is blind, but I trust him.
You are not sir. You are not.
graduated from Batman to Daredevil, nice.
Guess who’s back...
Back again..
Walpole Back...
Tell a friend..
Mary Burwell: I CREATED A MONSTER
I don"t have friends, I could tell my therapist though.
I'm not sure if him being blind is a real twist or a clever joke, but it is a damn epic way to end a story like this
I see Walpole has returned! Just wanna know when we can begin scheming again!
I'm always up to something. ;)
@@robertwalpole360 In the meantime, I saw him in ANCIENT EGYPT, trying to teach Hatshepsut how to rule her kingdom as the Second Female Pharaoh in the history of Egypt! (Yeah they need to make an episode about her! I mean SHE HAS TWO MANGAS about her FFS!)
The Naples Soldier has returned....
Go to France they’ll love you
He stopped? When did he stop?
"Because, like justice, John was blind" Idk why but that last line really made me smile
That ending actually made my jaw drop.
"Robert Walpole, whose exploits you might be familiar with from our South Seas Bubble series..."
...and from every subsequent Lies video, as well!
Honestly, taking Wilde's plan and just not being corrupt isn't a bad plan in itself.
All things will eventually fade.
Except Walpole. He does not
Walpole is eternal.
@@Wulfspyder The true king of the Underworld
Also, the plan of THE man, Bismarck.
I just love how all the women in this history series have this universal "done-with-all-this" look on their faces
The last line about John Fielding being blind gave me chills; fantastic series!
You weren't lying when you said the Walpole Connection would be easy.
FYI -- when i used to work for a Tv company, i often visited the road where Henry Fielding lived. There was a blue plaque outside his home marking this. I didnt know his police story till now. Only his novelist side.
So cheers + Thumbs up.
Now, this is M. Night Shyamalan level of twist-endings
Coraline Walpole isn’t real, he can’t hurt you.
Coraline Walpole: 1:23
He’s your OTHER Prime Minister
"Henry Fielding was a dangerous man... with a pen."
"I once saw him kill three men in a bar. With a pencil. A f*cking PENCIL."
Someone hire this man to write a Netflix series. This is epic.
man this was super interesting and engaging every time I hear historical accounts like this one I can't help but think what a fantastic screenplay this would make without any embellishments at all it is practically begging to be put on some kind of screen somewhere props to you guys for bringing it to light with maybe not all of it's glory but most of it
So instead of Batman we're getting Daredevil? I'm good with that
We started with Batman, turns out his Robin evolved into Daredevil instead of Nightwing-Red Hood or others.
You know somebody has you hooked when you're watching the episodes one by one when you're supposed to be doing something
This year is the 250th anniversary of captain cooks circumnavigation of the world and exploration of the pacific. a series on his life would be really cool?
Oh my god, this channel has the best cliffhangers ever.
"you've been struck by, you've been hit by, a smooth warrant"
i like that they all wore badges with their initials on that was VERY useful of them and probably quite prescient too

Fielding: I'm about to begin this police force's entire career.
some say Walpole remains to this day, manipulating the timeline in his favor
This series can actually be a good tv show
There was a show on Channel 4 (in the UK) about the Bow Street Runners in 2008: City of Vice, starring Ian McDiarmid and Iain Glen.
@@princecharon Emperor Palpatine AND Ser Jorah! How have I missed this?

That Froakie with the Walpole and Wild plushies is too cute, why is it even there? XD
I feel like this deserves an action movie.
I've been waiting for the Bow Street Runners to appear.
Wow, I had no idea that the guy who wrote "Tom Jones" was so talented in other areas, especially in his knowledge of the law!
*shakes fist to heavens* WALPOOOOOOLE!!
We all know that he was always with us.....
This is easily the wildest ride for something I thought would be super simple.
hey love your videos my wife and I love them want to say keep up the great work I can't say how much I love this channel I found a community that I feel I can talk gaming and not turn into a flame war, a channel that teaches me new things about history to further explore, and a channel that shows me the light that people bring into this world when everyone else is focuses on the bad. Thank you so much for everything you have done and continue to do . I miss Alison and James but you are more then worthy to carry the torch of what this channel stands for. looking forward to seeing what you have for next year
9:15 much like the man himself, I did not see that coming.
Walpole is always everywhere, if he's not physically present, his name is mentioned or thought about by someone lmao.
Jonathan wild: *exists
Henry Fielding: IT WAS WALPOLE!
justice takes time, but it's wrath is undeniable.
"Eww and cry." - This, sadly, perfectly sums my love life up.
Walpole returns! Also, this is why police should be professional, but accountable, why some americans are so afraid of more centralized police, I have no idea.
Walpole returns!
I always seem to return. ;)
@@robertwalpole360 yes.. yes you are

I was not expecting the twist of blindness at the end. Made me literally do a double take xD.
Plot twist, walpole acts on plans written by bismark, they are in league
I love your history videos, Hussite wars might be interesting to do if you have space for the next historical video :P
I seriously love the new theme
That being blind plot twist at the end! DAMN
How the hell has this not been made into a multi season series on BBC or HBO!?
Is there an album somewhere with all this amazing music you all create?
I thought that this series ended
they ended with a cliff hanger that highlighted a new person for the next video
Nah, this one's going to be a 4- or 5-part'er. We're in for the long haul.
Do a video on the formation of the metropolitan police and a love your vids
I have been waiting all week for this episode!
Hi found this channel because of this series
He got banned from being a playwright and just became a lawyer? Becoming a lawyer must have been really easy in 18th century London.
It is amazing that Highwaymen operated in the heart of the city.
*Comedian forms London's first police force*
_It's just a social experiment bro!_
No joke. These last three episodes would be a fantastic hbo miniseries
Why am i more engaged in these videos than social studies class
That ending hit really well!
That justice ending...Perfect
What a thouroghly admirable man that Fielding was. cept perhaps for the alcoholism.
Also do you know who apparently invented gothic horror?....It was Walpole.
I still find it quite fascinating for a political satirist to be inventing the early incarnation of the modern police force.
It's like telling me John Oliver created cybersecurity.
Wow that was a great episode 👍👍😱. That last sentence comparing blind justice with JF was great 👍
Would you guys consider doing a video on the Kingdom of Munster in Ireland?
Always something new to learn - and in such an engaging way ..... thanks ...
I knew it, I just KNEW you guys would bring Walpole back one day ;)
We need a Walpole series. NOW!
There's only one kind of book that is a Masterpiece
_Off-brand Manga_
An even better Masterpiece is when Fielding is the MAIN CHARACTER of that Manga!
I mean if Simo Hayha gets a Manga where he's R69'd and BADASS AF, any historical figure can!
Of Henry Fielding's novel "Tom Jones", one critic was quoted as saying "It's not unusual".
It was Walpole! It was always Walpole!
It’s always Walpole...
Ngl I love your art style because it (in my opinion) perfectly reminds people that sometimes less is more
I love you guys videos and I love the animation on the videos. Wish you all the best
I'm already loving the bow street fighters!
I like this series a lot. Keep the Victorian stories coming. I love this so much!!!
took me 1 and a half years to realise no characters have noses. Thats how professional this is
What an awesome episode!!! Please make Mexican Revolution episodes next
Hey HBO, are you listening? This sooo calls for a feature-length series!
There will be nothing left in the universe and Walpole will still be there
True
Heck yeah, awesome blind historical person! :D
This is amazing, and I am really proud to be a writer right about now.
5:35 A sergeant in motion outranks a lieutenant who doesn't know what's going on.

Great job you guys teach so much great series. May I suggest the campaign of julius caesar or Spanish Inquisition who be great stories to tell.
