There is the Brussels Effect. Many regulatory frameworks by he EU are copied in spirit by other countries, although not line by line.
For example the GDPR in spirit was copied by some US-States. It’s not as strict as the GDPR but it’s something.
It won’t come tomorrow or next week but at least some principles of this will land in other countries eventually.

It’s sad that I would have to reinstall my OS to get features that I have always wanted with windows. It’s sad that Microsoft hates me as a user so much that they lock down legitimately good features to a region because they were forced to do it only there.
Why does Microsoft hate me so much? I purchased my computer. I bought a windows license. I didn’t pirate it or anything. At this point… it genuinely hurts and it’s personal.

They don't hate you. They don't even know who you are as a person, form their perspective you are just data and profit potential. In fact everything in capitalism works like this, never trust corporations, it's fine to buy and use their stuff if they have any useful tool you need or simply like. But never let them persuade you into thinking they actually really care about anything other than profit. The people who work there might care about lot's of stuff, they are people, but businesses have to generate profit and growth, and will do anything to keep it going

I once used linux for a few months, but ultimately moved back to windows since there were a few things which didn't work which I needed or lack of alternatives I liked for some others.

Though as soon as you connect to some non-EU IP address during an international travel, Windows might revert back to the standard bloatfest Windows is known for, since they don't have to comply with any other region laws. I don't think Windows is dying out, considering the Worldwide market share they still have.
Even though MacOS is rising in user-base, but it's entry cost is still keeping people away from it in a lot of the international market, especially for the newer products.
I mean, a basic Windows PC (with 1TB SSD) can be made with new parts for under $600, while cheapest new MacOS (with 1TB SSD) costs $1000 (i am referring to M2 Mac mini with 1TB SSD upgrade).
As for Linux System, while they are overall cheaper and good, but they still have a learning curve harder than Windows, meaning Beginners/Amateurs (who make the largest share of the market) would prefer Windows over Linux.

@@clwho4652 weird, I uninstalled onedrive from my windows 10 laptop no problem (from the app list nonetheless, still I had to delete the whole folder from the program files because uninstalling doesn't remove that), though it was in 2022 with 21H2, maybe they changed something with 22H2, idk, my win 10 laptop committed seppuku the day after I updated it to 22H2 kek
The issue windows 10 has is that the onedrive shortcut doesn't disappear from file explorer even if you uninstalled it, and if you click it by mistake gives a bad error with red icon that is rather annoying, as you cannot esc/enter out of it but you have to click on okay.
There's a registry hack to make the context menu go away tho (even if you didn't uninstall the app, using the tweak hides it).

On Linux, you won't be stopped from RM RFing your whole drive. Meanwhile Microsoft is bloated with things that can't be installed without tons of scripts.
On Linux you can make the GUI look however you want. From windows-like to mac-like to whatever gnome is
On Linux you gotta do some tinkering and the TRUE Linux vendors are small (as in those who build their products entirely around Linux) like TuXedo Laptops and System_76 but they're more customizable then normal vendors like dell.
And on Linux, the new user experience is hell (no, your grandma who only uses chrome doesn't count) but each small thing you learn, from what desktop environments are to rolling vs stable vs unstable vs LTS, feels like a legitimate achievement.
(PS: for those Linux users on Reddit who *think* they know how us newbies feel. You don't. We aren't magic computer wizards, we don't know what X11 and Wayland are, we can't even use the terminal properly, and we don't know jack💩 about arch stop speaking on our behalf.)
Good luck playing online games though. I play single player and (outside of RPG maker VX games specifically) I'm ok.

Windows as an operating system is a big gate keeper to other operating systems. And even with the change introduced to windows eu, the majority of users won't care and still use edge as their default browser, because it works. And why's that? Because nowadays for the majority of users operating systems are just glorified browser emulators.

I really don’t get this argument about the default browser being Edge, in 2023, after almost 20 years of Chrome being the dominant browser.
And, Edge is really Chrome under the hood…

    • @romancvijanovic7130

@@rodrigodearcayne In the early 2000s the most used browser was internet explorer. The reason for that being is, that internet explorer was the default browser back then. This changed to being chrome with the introduction of smartphones. Because soon after android was introduced as the dominant nominator google shipped chrome with it.
With the majority of user computers being smartphone chrome obviously will be the market leader. that in itself can be regarded as an issue too.
With newer versions of Windows microsoft introduced their Edge browser. And it being the default browser on Windows will also see a dominant rise in usage.
      tl;dr
But the gist of it is. Chrome is the most popular browser because there are many android smartphones around.

Chrome is not the place to be anymore for a long time. Google is a terrible grift company since 10 years. I just use Brave and recommend it to everyone. Apart from the far superior security with their "shield" it will block all adds of Google like YT adds. So time to change my virtual friend, enjoy 😎@@rodrigodearcayne
Edit: I forgot to say I also use Brave-browser on mobile for near all apps. Even more important as adds on mobile are the most intrusive and get 100% blocked by Brave. All apps thru Brave browser work perfectly ok (think of youtube, etc). Some apps are a bit different but no problem like GoogleMaps. Google maps recently introduced annoying advertisments on the map and so I migrated that too toward Brave browser under mobile. Only whatsapp and Gmail are still stand alone here. Hope this helps some as it is a big unknown 😊

But what the admx actually do is setting settings in your registry. I think you can open the admx in a text editor and see what registry settings it sets. You can just have a text file with a list of a bunch of registry key and set values and save it as a .reg file and then run it and it will set all those values for registry keys in a second.

The oddity is when it comes to the UK... like, i would guess the UK would clone much of the stuff the EU is doing, as its not like it was built with the US ruleset or any others for that matter, i think of this on a standard consumerism scale as if you sell anything be it EU or UK then who in the right mind is gonna repackage EU based stuff for the UK unless you have infinite money, its all a cost for the company.
Even for companies that want to seperate things, it makes more sense to just say "this side gets this version cos things" as the logistics involved will be messier than ever, again, more cost to the company, its not about the people, the companies just dont like parting with 1 cent.

This has partly come about because some EU members, the UK, Norway and other Nordic countries which are EU members ran down renewing contracts which had run for decades. The main reasons were that Microsoft broke its word over W10 being the last numbered Windows and that Windows would evolve as a subscription service. THEN they released Windows 11 and the screens of very many machines gave the message that they had become obsolete.
This was profoundly dishonest as the alleged "security standards" were based on a choice at M'soft and a long list of CPUs were not at all obsolete and therefore not able to "support" Windows 11.
Europe tends to have state run education, medical, legal, administrative and transport systems (let alone defense) and I was involved on the IT procurement side of things in the UK. Alongside other European countries, parts of Africa, the middle east, India and the very large Commonwealth we ordered a full assessment to run for up to two years and aspects were at different paces in different countries. Having established that the claimed "security" chips claim was specious there was a deep dive into components and especially Intel showed that M'soft assertions were flagrantly dishonest, especially re age of components set against known parameters.
There had been a 'workaround' after XP was phased out and support could be bought but, once bitten, twice shy. The UK, Commonwealth and Nordic states explored different solutions to suit contexts but the overall effect in densely populated societies and those of similar wealth did not resume seeing Microsoft as the main OS supplier very far into this decade.
The thoroughness of work inspecting the famous systems revealed rather poor patching of kernels in M'soft and Mac, whereas swap file development in the open source expanding 'world', far less heat wastage and the evolution of architectures which had been squashed in the 1980s essentially blew the mysterious air of the giants from toe to head and the techies found a lot of cobwebs, band aid and deliberately reduced I/O versatility for what they were and also symbolized. Greed and the ludicrous situation of purchasers never QUITE owning their devices had a bad smell and how things go from here is far more in the hands of an informed customer base than it was in California's golden decades.
