The Seven did originally try and be heroes (though Jack was a coward even from the start) but due to their lack of actual training they ended up screwing up big time, and unfortunately Black Noir made it so Homelander ultimately went down his dark path in the comics.

Season 5 could be the end of the story for the boys in the present timeline but they could always do season 6 as a prequel and show Mallory starting the boys and recruiting butcher along with frenchie and mm and maybe 2 other characters that end up dying and being replaced by hughie and kimiko
