  • Rationalizing radical is used in simplifying fractions with a radical in the denominator. To simplify the fraction, the radical in the denominator has to be eliminated. This is done by multiplying both numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the denominator. If the denominator is a single radical, the conjugate is whatever we have to multiply to the given radicand in order to get a perfect square (n = 2) or perfect cube (n = 3). If the denominator is a binomial with a radical, the conjugate is a binomial with the same terms but opposite operation. This conjugate is derived from the difference of two squares.
