Not only am I planning a fall garden, but I'm also planning a winter one. I live in zone 6 in Colorado. Our winters can be harsh. But with a little protection, some plants make it through. I had some lettuce and kale make it through last winter. I had a 6 mm cover over them for a few periods (nights in the teens w/o snow cover) ... but when we got snow, I left them open. They got buried and we had temperatures down to -10 or -15 .. and windy days too. But under the snow, they are protected. We even had below-average temperatures in January (like 7 degrees below average)! The nights got warmer (20s), and the snow melted. Most of the lettuce and some of the kale survived and took off growing in March and April. Going to repeat that again this fall/winter.
So am I! Last winter was so mild I could have grown much many more brassicas.
I'm on the Kansas side for zone 6 a day I will be trying similar this year. Nice to know zone 6 has good potential.
I find chard does really well, even buried under feet of snow. Peas also do well, though they stop growing when it gets really cold, they start again in the early spring and give me a great jump start. Lastly, spinach is well known to endure very cold temps as is “golden flower in the snow” which is a type of choy that loves snowy cold weather. With as much sun as Colorado gets, you should be able to do some great winter gardening, especially with a bit of cover! Best of luck.
P.s. the seeds I got from MIGardener have been germinating in 3-5 days, no matter what I plant. 7 days max, no heat mat or grow lights. I’m always caught off guard at how fast they come up! Lol

Same here. I'm trying a 42 day tomato for fall and ALL of the seeds germinated in 5 days or less. Now I'm starting to feel overwhelmed with what to do with them smh.
Yes, I'm planting a fall garden for the 2nd year and planting as much as possible. I have already planted out kale, Swiss chard and lots of lettuces and spinach. On my porch are the squashes hardening off and inside are the brassicas which need to be transplanted. Last year I was challenged with aphids. This weekend the hoops are going in to cover as needed. I’m in the middle of this Texas heat dome (100+° for 2 weeks straight), but I figured out that on the north side of my house where I have a giant retaining wall filled with very sandy soil, that with compost mixed in, I’m able to grow melons, zucchini, cucumbers, and corn with no problem at all! They get just a little bit of direct sun in the morning and then nothing but indirect light after 11am.

I've got carrots, bunching onions, bush beans, cucumbers space 80 & a lots of cabbage (we tie up cabbage heads to let our chickens play "tetherball" while they take bites...super good for dark rich orange yolks!) already planted. I'll add radishes, lettuces & spinaches in a couple of weeks. (We're harvesting those already in my Hydroponics system...YUMMY!)

I'm starting 3 types of beans. 2/3rds eaten as sprouts. I've gotten a tank... no. Lol.

I got 93% germination on your bush beans back at the beginning of July 12/13 on top crop and 15/16 on dragons tongue. Now keeping them alive is another story. I’m now starting seeds indoors to replace most of them. Time will tell! They lacked nutrients and my inexperienced self didn’t know how to react fast enough. Thanks for the videos. :)

My head is about to explode. I had a plan do some fall gardening. This is my first year of doing a vegy garden. Trying to just pack in as much as I can is becoming overwhelming. I'm tired. 40hr work week plus just regular day to day family events plus now massive gardening.I know this needs to be done for today's world but geeish. It's a lot of work in this modern time living because all of the other stuff that goes on. I'll plan to do more of a fall garden next year so I will take notes of this for next year.
I’m going to plant a fall garden for the first time.
I am pondering planting more seeds during this cooler stretch we are having right now. I may also plant some Fallish type crops behind my greenstalks to take full advantage of that stretch. The flipside is what you mentioned about it getting hot again and stressing out my plants 🤔

I think he said it was late July. They should have captioned it in with the edit. Perhaps they will amend it.
This time of year, germination time is usually shorter, but good to plan for the longer possible time.
I have put seed heads of dill at the base of zucchini an no squash bugs yet! Had them last year at fall planting but not this year!
Yes we plant fall and all the way through winter in cold frames. Your tips are awesome and you help make us better gardeners.

Zone 6, Cincinnati and yes my first fall garden. Started seeds indoors for 2 types of broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, and cabbage. These will all be planted in 5 gallon buckets. Lettuce, spinach and swiss chard will also be planted. As available in the raised beds, green beans will continue to be planted. Love your channel.

I had no idea you had to add the days to maturity to the days to germinate! No wonder nothing matures as fast as the seed packet says! Thanks so much for your videos!
Also consider length of harvest. If you have something like okra that you are not going to be able to harvest all at once, add several weeks because you will keep harvesting.
Planting my first fall garden, outside of planting garlic. We're trying for some pak choi, some carrots, some kale and maybe some fall root crops. We're trying to start small to get the hang of it.
I have my seeds going inside because it’s too hot right now for direct sowing for fall planting. True leaves starting already after sowing on 5 days ago. Thanks for the awesome seeds!

I have lettuces growing a 3' high bed with a repurposed piece of 30 yr old flex plastic lattice arched over it with an old sheer curtain attached. Planted it all around 4th of july. Full sun area but perfectly filtered light. We had the high 90s for a week, 2 weeks ago and theyre doing fantastically. They did need watering every day. Theyll make do until the last frost bcs the corn salad is slow germinating and slow growing so when the other lettuces konk out, theyll be at their peak.
Im also ready to plant some bush and vine cuckes to replace the ones that are worn out
Alabama Zone 8, still hot but I think the worst is over. I am planting a 2nd crop of Jade & Provider beans this week. I have only grown lettuce in the fall, but this year I plan to expand to carrots, broccoli, collards, and beets. Just need to sit with the calendar and a pad if paper to get the timing right.
We took down the 20 year old play set as the grandkids have now outgrown it. Best spot in our yard so it is now my Garden and I have more room.

Last year I tried a fall/winter garden and really liked it. 1. Less maintenance. 2. Less water needed esp. our raining season is in the winter. 3. Fewer pest problems. 4. Much more fun to stay in the garden since our summer is soooo hot and dry it tires me up quickly.
I will still keep a spring/summer garden for tomatoes, peppers, egg plants, and certain squashes of my favorites but no leafy veggies 😂
I'm currently growing lettuce from the "summer crisp lettuce" group of seeds that resist bolting in the summer heat. I just harvested a huge batch yesterday for lunch today and there's 2 more containers waiting to be cut. I'll be starting more today.
My spring/summer garden is a bit of a disappointment. It is late and very unproductive. I'm hoping I gave better luck with a fall garden. Thank you for the info and inspo.
I planted patty pan squash in early July for the same reason. So far, so good. Also, gardening ASMR should totally be a thing.

It is hot and dry here in Alabama. I’m hoping my fall garden comes through. Been watering but praying for rain.
I am in 7b and I just started broccoli, purple cauliflower, reg cauliflower and broccoli romanesco I haven’t ever had success with them but I am hoping I get something.

I’m in northern Michigan. This is my first year to plant a Fall garden. Radishes and peas, both sugar snap and shelling.
In Northern Michigan, the trouble is that even cold tolerant crops have to be started in the worst heat of summer, so they fail to thrive. Buying starts would be great, but no one has starts this late.
Yup they took most of the starts from my nursery about a couple weeks ago of course I live in Arizona and temperatures have been 105+ for about 3 months straight
@@TheRvGardenerChannel I have a small greenhouse, that is too hot to keep plants in most of the season. I plan to try to grow some cabbages in there once it cools to less than the temp of the surface of the sun. 😂 it was not as useful as I thought it would be... But I am going to move it to a less sunny location next year.
@@ObiMomKenobi13I'm in S.E. Mich and the only things I have in the greenhouse so far are: beans, cucumbers and a few varieties of squash. The cucumbers seem to be mostly affected by it but I can't take them out because groundhogs decimated my spring garden.
@ObiMomKenobi13 I have AC. I do start some plants inside in a 10 gallon aquarium I upscaled as a mini greenhouse.
We are going to discuss tonight over dinner out what we are planting for fall. Our first frost date here in Iowa is Oct 11, so we're running out of time for some things but I'm still going to try to sneak in some zucchini and maybe butternut squash and see what I get, since our earlier plantings got decimated by both vine borers and bugs. Probably will do more cool weather crops as well like cabbage, broccoli & spinach. And maybe carrots and garlic, we'll see.
I plant my garlic in late November December and let it go dormant then they wake up in the spring and they are off. Am I doing it wrong?

I got my spring cabbage put in late in june now its almost ready to harvest here in August, only one plant bolted.
@@kansasmisfit7404you can also “force dormancy”. I do my regular planting in october. But around march, i’ll sprout another set and stick them in the fridge for a week or 2, then plant them so they bulb tru summer.
What are the onions with seed heads in the bed next to you? My dad had something like that growing up, but can't remember what they were called?

I just planted Radishes, Sugar Snap Peas, and Four Season Lettuce. I'm going to add more beds and plant some beans and cucumbers. I need a bigger yard.
Love your thoughts on the germination variation rate! Things can be very slow for me on the PNW coast, I just start the seeds and pray and wait. I also love the ideas of starting seeds in containers to be ready to plant when there is space in the garden! Thanks for the great suggestions!
I’m on the PNW coast too. I do seed starting in soil blocks too as the heat in the garden is too much for the seedlings. They just dry out too fast. I do the starts on a more sheltered back porch where I can really baby them as I feel they need even more care than in the spring. . Yes, the germination on some is slow but because of warm temps things like carrots and beets are faster, which I mostly direct sew.
I’m in the Eugene area. My tomatoes are just barely starting to blush. And the voles just took out half my jacobs cattle beans! I’ve started some fall cabbage and broccoli.

I am really enjoying my Tess' Land Race tomatoes, which my daughter in law called the boba tee of tomatoes, lol, and 8 Ball zucchini's, both seeds I bought on MIgardener. Both are producing abundantly, and delicious. Thanks for the Fall garden tips!
I usually plant my fall garden in mid to late August, but this year I got shade cloth (40%) and on Aug 1 started lettuce, kale, broccoli, spinach, snow peas, snap peas, beets, radish, and carrots with soaker hoses keeping the soil perfectly moist, and everything has already spouted. South-central Wisconsin here. I plant my garlic the first week of November, usually after a couple of mild frosts. Also, with beans, it's a plant I always over sow by planting them 1" apart, then thinning when their second set of leaves appear because of issues with pests I had the first couple of times I grew them. Great content, per usual!

We will try a limited fall garden. You've inspired us to try some cabbage, lettuce, already have peas coming, and maybe more beets.
I never thought about planting cucumbers later in the season! My cucumbers from earlier this year aren't doing so well, and I thought that was it for the year, but now I can try again and not wait for next year!

I'm in Iowa. I have more carrots, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli started 2 weeks ago, radishes, iceberg lettuce, MORE carrots, and raddichio a week ago. Next week I'll plant spinach and the more tender lettuce varieties.
I'm also using a 40% shade cloth on my fall garden bed. I had it over the soil for a good week before I direct sowed, to give me a leg up on lowering that soil temp for the crops that don't like hot soil.

Great content fellow gardeners. In my case, zone 9b in the Sacramento area as a retired small yard gardener, I am now learning to garden year round with spring/summer, summer/fall and fall/spring plantings.
Cold frames , hot beds and mini green houses can easily be used to extend the season.
Please do a video on squash vine borers. Dealing with that now
Cannelini beans, red swan bush beans, broccoli, cauliflower, Swiss chard, peas. My broccoli, cauliflower, and Swiss chard are already growing in pots and my beans, carrots and peas are in the ground. My first frost date is 90 days from now, so should be able to get a good late fall harvest. First time trying it, so we'll see!

I liked this a lot. Also, I think a rainy and cloudy variable would be an amazing additional variable. I live near Seattle and after September, even though the temperatures are fine, clouds and rain will really gum up the typical advice.
I started carrots, cabbage, blue lake green beans and cukes in seed containers. I will also in the fall start lettuce, spinach radishes and bunching onions. Thanks again for the great information.
I am going to look into a few fall ideas, I have a few box containers but lots of empty holes from other things. I am debating if I have room for a few cauliflowers and cabbages ha.

I would love a local source for emerite pole beans, Luke. Two years ago we ordered seeds from Annie's and got excellent results. Last year we ordered from Vermont bean seed company and they were awful, poor germination rate and a lot of them just stopped growing after a few weeks. They are hands down my favorite bean, they are stringless and delicious at any stage. Btw excellent job on the trifecta+. I forgot to fertilize this year but I'm still getting a ton of juicy 🍅 and 🌶 👍

North Florida here. I just started my tomatoes, cauliflower and Broccoli today in seed containers. Can't decide if I will direct sow my cabbage or not. Listening to you I think I'll direct sow with shade cloth. Thanks for all you share.

And if you don’t have shade cloth old 100% cotton sheets from the second hand store work great. I’ve used them with success several times.
I wish I could do a fall and winter garden but with it getting down to -10 to -20 in the winter it's just not feasible unless I can set up a heated greenhouse, instead I usually plant heavy in spring and summer and dehydrate everything I don't eat fresh....
Maybe I should try to plant more of my Swiss Chard. I got 2 wimpy plants, and then a 3rd mystery plant from the same seed package that is 5xs bigger than what the actual chards.
Last year my pepper plants had a hard time growing in summer for some reason but despite cooler weather they started taking off in fall and I could still harvest in November. We live in the Chicago subs zone 5b so this kind of summer vegetables usually doesn’t make it past September/October here. I was surprised about it. It was called wonder pepper and I now believe they called it that way because it keeps you wondering all season long 😂 I think I’m too late for new cucumbers now (the spring planted ones are still going strong though) but will try anyway with some short time ones. Yes fall garden. Zucchini, cukes, dill, cilantro, peas, maybe ill get a sucker from one of my tomato plants that did well.
I tried to start a falk garden this year and cabbage moth caterpillars ate all my starts. 😢
