Living in India, having met way more Indians than you can ever think of from literally every region of India, let me give you some perspective. Accents differ in every state of india ranging from very light towards north, north east to the very thick stereotypical accent in some of the southern states. It all depends on their native language. Hundreds of languages are spoken across the country, states which have languages that enunciate every syllable really well tend to have thicker accents. Then again those who had good English education also tend to have much lighter accents in india. So no you can't put all indians into one stereotypical box. Your sample size is really small and biased, it's because people from the southern states are extremely intelligent and tend to get jobs abroad more than the rest, it just happens that they have thicker accents.

Well, in many shows they show that Indians mispronounce words and then of course the accent. An accent is common, I agree with you but in shows, they exaggerate them and then everywhere you go people expect that you need help with English and have an exaggerated accent. Added to that people dont usually put on indian accents because they are hot, they mock them. One time I was randomly going through TV channels and then a channel came where the Indian character there is talking like that and making extreme errors when communicating in English. Its irritating, not to mention hurtful.

But “the accent that’s so normalized” is actually true… it’s not just a stereotype, it’s okay. It’s very common for countries to have different English accents
Not only that but if you come from different regions of India or speak different languages (eg hindi, telugu etc) then you are bound to have different accents when speaking English, but the Hollywood Indian accent is a broad sweeping generalisation to boot

Right. But not everyone who looks ethnic sounds it. That's the point.
@@sandyt7379 but they're playing a character, my g. If the character is an Indian immigrant, he's probably gonna sound a lot closer to the stereotypical one, and there's nothing wrong with that either.
I actually know about the 'indian accent" because of youtube tutorials and not from any Hollywood movies

Exactly. It's not Hollywood. All one needs to do is watch one scam bating video to know.
Honestly, as an Indian, I find the "Indian Accent" to be perfect Indian English. And the accent in which he spoke earlier as "American Accent".

Ok so I can still stereotype this accent then
Honestly I don't see why people need to put types of englishes on a pedestal and say one type is more "correct" than the other. It's not the accent that's bad it's the mocking reactions. If anything the english language with an accent is something people should be proud of, it represents the effort of learning a different language adapting around the different sounds learnt from their mother tongue.
All my Indian friends talk with the "indian accent" it has nothing to do with Hollywood.
Exactly
I used to know somebody from India and he had a strong Indian accent
I only know that “Indian accent” from scammers
lmao true
Omg so truuu

The scammers are putting on that accent because that's what Hollywood has normalized. When they go home from scamming they sound completely American.

Ok let's be real, most Indians DO have that "stereotypical accent", and there is literally nothing wrong with it. Although it is weird when people continuously make American actors put on a fake, very over exaggerated accent because idk I guess they think it's "funny".
Most Indians don't tho
Haven’t met a single one who doesn’t have that accent

“Hollywood Normalized accent”
Ok, tell that to the numerous Indian’s that I’ve met in my life that spoke like that
I'm an Indian and honestly I agree with this lol, it’s not all Indians but Indians who have immigrated might sound like that tbh
Indo americans that grew up in America typically don’t have an accent. No doubt there are Indians that moved to America from India who do speak with heavy accents, but there are always those who have lived in America their whole lives, so it isn’t cool to retain these stereotypes. Don’t be stubborn and assume that every Indian you met in your life accounts for every single Indian that lives in your country.
That’s how my boss talk
Your mothertongue has an effect on your 2nd English. Indians who have English as their second language, speak it with a touch of the accent of their native language. So yes, not all indians sound like that. North indians who have hindi as their first language speak english in a different accent compared to a tamil people or kannad people. Same with north-east indians.
@@libertia actually it is exactly cool to still have that stereotype because most Indians in movies have not been in America for a hundred years. So you should be representing Indian immigrants.
It's quite pretentious of you to think that you should still represent Indians when you've been here for at least three generations. You have no actual connection to India anymore. If you love America you should be calling yourself American and stop acting like you are able to represent people who actually have parents that left India or left India themselves.
You just make it sound like you don't have any loyalties to America and you have more loyalties to India and that makes you a traitor. Either be American or be Indian but by the third generation you should be able to figure out which one you want you to be and represent.
"the stereotypical accent normalized by Hollywood" that accent is abundant in the South African Indian community so it's quite natural 😂 stereotypes are generally based on reality after all
I don't think there is anything to be ashamed about it.....the Russians have an accent, the British have an accent, the chinese have an accent while speaking English.....they are not ashamed about their accent....so why should we be....
@@072shananthakuria3 an accent basically portrays that you not (and will never be) a real English person. Some people though 🤦♀️... They desperately want to be British/American even though they're born in a different country! So what they do is they try to hide their accent to make it look like they're actually English people, so when they're accent is found out it's like they've been caught, ousted, like a fraud. So they become ashamed of their accent.
The thing about India is that it has many, many languages. More than the entirety of Europe. So yes, accent which based on Hindi and the languages close to it will be a gross generalization, especially seeing as this man is clearly South Indian, meaning his mother tongue most likely comes from the Dravidian language family which has almost nothing in common with Hindi.
