- Walk thru downtown Santa Cruz, 1 year after the 1989 earthquake, Teacup, Leasks, and site of the Cooper House, also starring Wayne, Peggy, Michelle, and Katy Overbeck. This is a home movie so please excuse technical and other errors.
Was feeling a bit nostalgic today after I randomly came across vids of another area in the late 80's and figured I'd check and see if anyone had vids of downtown SC around that time or a tad later. This video is the first thing I came across, interesting to see it a while after the 89 quake, don't think I spent any time there very soon after. Thanks for sharing.
The statement at 4 minutes or so definitely caught my attention, guess it didn't take quite as long as you suggested it could? Unfortunate in my opinion Wish it would have taken longer. The area is not unrecognizable, but it's crazy how much it has changed. I miss the way that area felt in the 90's. It's still a nice area but wow, last time I was there it just felt incredibly crowded compared to back then.
That's an incredible amount of damage. I miss Fords and the Cooper House.
Thanks for posting. I lived in Soquel, up old san jose rd not far from epicentre. Still think about the quake from time to time. Sure miss Santa Cruz sometimes.
I lived fairly near the epicenter also up old San Jose rd. I miss old Santa Cruz also .l had roots that were severed. My teacher played with warmth ,my mother worked for Leasks and Fords.l worked downtown at AR woods all gone.
@@dougtodd305 Loved it up there. We were near the old mill pond.
@@olivei2484 I was farther up old sj rd.but I had a house in Niscene Marks behind the gate in the park
@@dougtodd305 I probably walked passed it trying to find the epicenter.
It seems like yesterday, and I suppose it was in some reckonings, but the little girls--they're in their mid-30's now! What a way to date a film.
Nah maybe 40s. Imma be 32… lol
And I was born in 92.
Really enjoyed watching this. I was five when the Earthquake hit and still remember it vividly to this day. It was great to see how much has changed over the years, thank you for sharing!
PS it appears we both share an affinity for Autocross and cars in general, double-cool ;)
Nice historical document
Thanks for this, I used to visit downtown Pacific ave. around those times to do a little business. Lunch at the Asian Rose, or India Joes, visit Squid Alley and Bookshop Santa Cruz, etc. etc.
very interesting
3:21 I remember this sculpture! I wonder what happened to it?
Even in it's ruined state, this version of downtown had so many more trees and plants
