My mother worked at the San Jose Mercury News in the early 1960s. She took me to the Rosicruian Egyptian Musuem several times. It was free admission! We moved from Los Gatos straight east along Blossom Hill Road into a brand new tract housing development just north of Pioneer High School. Many of the houses were still being built when we moved in and the apricot and cherry orchards were still being cleared away for nearly a year afterward. So I found it interesting to see here all of the names on the billboards the developers gave to entice prospective home buyers. The San Jose City Manager at the time, A.P. Harmann, said he wanted to see San Jose become as big as Los Angeles. Joe Ridder, the publisher of the Mercury was very pro-growth and so had Harmann’s back on the issue. The developers had free reign. Massive growth spurt! It being the 60s, it seemed there was at least one garage band on every street in my neighborhood for quite a while. I remember my grandmother taking me to Town & Country Village many times. I celebrated my 12th birthday with friends watching 2001 Space Odyssey at the Century 21 Theatre which had opened about 3 weeks prior. Lived about ten years in that area, nearly my entire childhood.
I lived in SJ from 67-71 while going to SJS, then again from 74-79. In 79 moved over the hill to Santa Cruz where I remain. There were still orchards when I lived there and I have very fond memories cuz in college we had a heck of a lot of fun! It was sweet to be reminded of the time I was there. In college we’d go the the east side to the Tropicana market to shop cuz things were cheaper. It is probably gone along with the Working Man’s Store where we bought Levi’s for $5 and my first hiking boots for $20. Big expense for me then🤗
Thanku u sir my great grandmother died in 2009 n was buried at oak hill cemetary at least I had gotten to meet her one of the last pair of her great grandchildren she had met n so she lived ahh man forgot wat part of San Jose ehm..I think gateway idk but she n my grandmother n aunts many of my aunts n uncles hw or still alive live here n cousins also.. N my dad grew up here but then my grandmother moved n my dad to fairfield dead ass town San Jose in some parts is peaceful to live in love it here xD I'll never leave .. My grandmother n great grandmother went to the real first church of san jose even tho their was another church bein built called the white church ..even wen it was first built before the 1957 new year she was always goin thn bishop jahaull came in n my grandmother was in bible class n college w him n many others

29 grand for a new house!....town and country village was Santana row but courtesy Chevrolet had the corner at stevens creek and Winchester...a lot of wood and good paying construction jobs ...those are long gone....San Jose " sprawled" during the early 70's

i was born and raised in sunnyvale and always even to this day, been very fascinated about the past and what it looked like… always asking my mom what was like back in the days? what was the whole atmosphere like? haha its really kool watching films shot around areas you know and seeing things in the films and videos you walked passed a couple days ago and realize that the video was shot 30-40+ years earlier and those things are still there… very nice footage

It took me a few minutes to remember it was Town & Country Village, and that was not very long ago! The old Valley Fair sign with the blue and white balls above were there when I was only a little kid. Really cool!

There is a movie marquee next to the Town and Country Village sign. It looks like Woodstock is playing. That was probably for the Town and Country Cinema in that shopping center. It originally played at the Century across Winchester, but likely made a second run at the Town and Country Cinema.
That's when all the cherry orchards were cut down along campbell ave. We would ride our bikes with the easy rider extended front forks we made ourselves and eat the cherry's whenever we wanted.
I love looking up the past of San Jose Born and Raised on the east side San Jose State was unique back in the day you will never duplicate the times when this town was great now it's all techy they don't know crap about the town there money don't buy me raised on the east side staying true money don't buy me

I think this film was transferred to tape a long time ago, before I updated my transfer equipment and before the digital era. I'll locate the film, clean it and transfer it again. East San Jose kid here. A lot of this (Town and Country, Valley Fair) was "Terra Incognita" to me until I got my DL.

I visited there once, I thought it was creepy, the Winchester house was interesting too.
