    We never missed a show and Ken Lane was Dino's piano player on the TV show. He even wrote Everybody Loves Somebody.

    What a delightful old guy! I wouldn't doubt he has many more stories to tell. Jimmy Stewart was a favorite actor of mine, a very gracious, kind man, who had none of the obnoxious behavior that Hollywood ("Ego Central" is what I call it) actors are so often part of in their work. It never changes, only actors are paid literally millions of dollars today for doing very little, and most of them are not worth it at all!

    This is quite inspirational - look at the incredible softness and smoothness of his playing; the roll on and roll off the keys; superb.

    Wasn't Ken Lane, Dean Martin's pianist at the time (for both the tv show and live shows) ? It must have happened before 1968 because that year Dean Martin' Jimmy Stewart and Raquel Welch were the top stars of the western Bandolero! There was an incident where Stewart kinda chastised Welch because she said was "bothered" by fans asking her for autographs during a break filming Bandolero! Stewart reminded her that those fans were the ones really paying for her salary with the tickets they bought for her movies.

      Raquel was just a little Latina girl with a good body who made it fairly good in the acting business for a while, but was just another one of those actors who let it go to her head! As for heads, she's just selling wigs now, or was; she must be about 78 or so now, so probably isn't doing much!

    I didn't expect this. When I read "Piano Player for Dean Martin," I naturally thought of Ken Lane, who would play the piano halfway through the show while Dean sang comic lyrics. (It turns out that Lane actually wrote what became Dean Martin's signature song, "Everybody Loves Somebody," in 1952.)

    • @lindashelley3635
      @lindashelley3635 5 років тому +3

      wdd3141 Yes, I assumed it would be about Ken Lane too, he was Deans main pianist for many years and played for him onstage and in clubs as well as on his TV show (there is a video on You tube of a theatre show Dean did with Frank Sinatra where Frank was ribbing him from the side of the stage, as they often did with each other, that includes the line; “and that goes also for your friend there at the piano with the helmet!” referring to Ken’s hairstyle). Maybe Mr Bailey was the pianist for Les Browns Band of Renown, which was Deans resident ‘house band’ on his TV show.

    So here's my guess for e e everyone asking about Ken Lane.... Ken probably did his segment with Dean in the middle of the show, and that was the extent Ken's involvement with the show. Ken Lane toured with Dean, did all his specials and was by his side for many years. Keep in mind that evertime they played even the tune of Everybody Loves Somebody, they had to pay Ken Lane, on that show it was quite often. Bob Bailey was a famous Jazz pianist that I'm going to guess worked in the production side for the musical numbers, since the show was based primarily as musical variety.

    there is one major problem with this fellow's memory. raqel welch co-starred with Jimmy Stewart and Dean Martin in Bandalero which was released in 1968 and she was a guest on the Dean Martin Show in 1969. she was pulling that guy's leg that she didn't know Jimmy Stewart. while she was throwing a tantrum. he was gullible.

    Cool story! I wonder if Bob ever heard Dean Martin himself play piano (some Internet article I read says Dean taught himself to play piano starting at age 8, and by age 12 had a "200 song" repertoire.) If true, it sounds like he was a pretty decent player. It also said, in his early singing career, he accompanied himself sometimes. I guess no video of that has survived, or maybe never existed, since those were the early days of video recording (expensive to do.) Couldn't find anything on UA-cam except for a short "Chopsticks' joke bit, where he did some flourishes at the end (but you can't see his hands, so I don't know if that was someone offstage playing, or Dean himself.) Does anyone know of any Dean Martin on piano video - or even someone who witnessed him play (or even someone who heard a second-hand story of him playing) way back when?

      Erik Hafer, I meant to say 19th century when Offenbach wrote it. The Can Can is not from the 1920s, it started in the 1820s. Offenbach wrote his Can-can in 1858 so there's no chance it had any royalties attached to it.

She scowled at me and said "you must be kidding?" I said, " I really love that jam on peanut butter sandwiches". She ended the conversation , but I bet there have been many times in her life since, that she wished she was an heiress to the Welch fortune. She
      could have done commercials for them, and it would have been a big hit !! Oh, I forgot.....big famous movie stars don't lower themselves to do TV commercials, unless they are plugging their own perfumes or merchandise labels.

    This is a good story - like others, I love to hear those from the good old days. BUT... this story is as much about Jimmy Stewart as it is about my cat. It's really a story about himself, it's just that Jimmy Stewart and Raquel Welch happened to be the guests that week. Never mind, we musicians need an ego boost and a trip down memory lane, so why not, I suppose... x

    Raquel looks is the only thing she had going for herself. She wasn't a good actor at all. I heard her say once two things that turn me against her,she said girls now days didn't know how to use their body like she did when she started acting. And her kids were never allowed over unless they were invited. Such a waste of beauty.
