Holy shit, Dean Martin speaks publicly for the last time and sounds so adorable and human and Geraldo goes and clownshoes his way through it and makes it awkward by bringing up Jerry. What the everloving fuck?

Geraldo could have been more sensitive in his questioning of Dean Martin on his call.

Deana has said that Jerry and her dad reconciled and would talk every week on the phone and see each other on occasion. What a nasty question to ask. I think Dean and Jerry figured it was best to keep their friendship private as it turned "nasty" in their break up of '56. All the rumors about splitting and a fued long before they broke up prob took a toll. They couldn't even have a normal argument without speculation.

I like your point of keeping the relationship private as a lesson from their breakup in ‘56. It sounds believable to me.

I read about Dean calling in on the show in Deana's book and I must say that the questions the host asked are really nasty. The ones about his health and wealth are downright rude, the ones about Jerry are out of place. No wonder Dean avoids the direct answer. While the animosity has disappeared, Dean is still cautious here. Or just very private. There's almost a sens of secrecy to his answers. Jerry tried and tried but if he succeeded in reconnecting with Dean, it was only on Dean's terms. And I think Jerry understood. But the truth is that what happened between them before and after the split it's their incredibly well kept secret.

Geraldo is often like that. Here is what Dean's son Ricci had to say about his father and Jerry reconnecting: "In March 1987, my brother was tragically killed while driving a military jet. About a hundred people attended the funeral. One of them came to pay homage to the son of a man he had loved and adored and missed. That person was Jerry Lewis. When Dad found out that Jerry had found time to be there that day, he was moved as I had never seen him before.
A week later we had dinner together and he told me that he and Jerry had started talking to each other again. He told me about the times when Jerry and Patti were his friends and how much fun they had enjoyed together. Those times were missing him to death. As Dad spoke, I noticed a sparkle in his eyes that I had never seen in many years. Jerry and my father had started talking and remembering again and for Dad it was a very important thing.
There was only one good thing that came out of my brother's death and that thing was that Dad and Jerry found each other."
      - Ricci Martin

@@Donazify Thank you for your reply. Ricci’s words are taken - I believe - from some non-English edition of Dean & me. The Italian edition in particular carries a foreword by Gary and an afterword by Ricci (that you have quoted). And they tell different stories. I’m not going to discuss here which one is more believable, I’ll only say that Ricci tells a similar story in his own book but without the ‘sparkle in his eyes / they reminisced together’ part. Let me clarify: I don’t doubt they were reconciled to a certain extent, but then again I don’t think they ever truly disliked each other, they were just hurting. The point I’m trying to make is: nobody but them really knows how much they spoke or visited or kept in touch. Descriptions of their relationship towards the end of Dean’s life are quite contradictory (even on Jerry’s part, for some reason). And Dean’s answers to Geraldo struck me because while he is still in full denial, he sounds more reserved than irritated.

It's interesting hearing him talk about Jerry. He almost avoids answering the question about reconciling. Strange when in 89' Jerry surprised him for his birthday. Maybe it was just too hard to talk about. Jerry has never stopped loving Dean, even now at the age of 91 he still calls him his friend and partner. I think Dean wanted to reconcile but he was not good at talking about things like that. It's 60 years later and we still are not sure of exactly why they broke up to begin with. I think Dean really loved Jerry, but he was the kind of guy who communicated better with actions than with words and his actions showed how much he really cared for Jerry even when they were no longer partners.

Definitely agree! But both of them also pretended that they never saw each other from 1956-1976 which was simply not true. There were public and private reunions between them, and I don't understand why both of them made it seem that way. Dean definitely wanted to reconcile and still wanted to be friends and called Jerry out for avoiding him, but it hurt Jerry too much to see him and remember the times they had together. It was like a divorce.

I know what you mean. I can't figure out why they said that they had not seen each other in twenty years when we know for a fact that they had. Its like they felt like they had something to hide. Jerry still only has the best things to say about Dean and he has nothing to gain from that, either. I agree with you that Dean wanted to be friends and that it was just too painful for Jerry. I think he really loved Dean and that he tended to be possessive of him. I think he knew that being around Dean and having to share him was too much for him to bare and that was part of why they split up in the first place. Also want to say thank you for sharing these vids.

He had problems sharing Dean with Jeanne after all. lol Jeanne said she couldn't handle the jealousy of another man. I think they thought they had something to hide too. It's very odd.

It is. I wish I knew what really happened between them. From what I have seen on the CCH, their radio show and their acts and movies it seems like there was a lot of love between them. If they thought they had something to hide then I would say they were probably right to split up. A scandal would have hurt more than just themselves, but their families. And that was something neither of them would have allowed, I think. As it was it hurt them both a lot, clearly. I keep thinking about how they reacted to what Red Skeleton asked them in 54. Not sure if you have seen that clip or not but if you check it out you'll see my point. Jerry panics and Dean laughs it off at first, until Jerry regains his composure, and then he gets nervous too.

Yeah I was the one that posted that clip either on this channel, or my givethechanceakid channel, I forget. Have you seen Where the Truth Lies? The book was inspired by Dean and Jerry and the movie had to change a little bit from the book so that it wouldn't bare as much resemblance to them, but you can still tell. haha

Dean Martin gave up the cigarettes a bit too late. Jerry gave them up in the early 80’s after a heart attack and heart surgery.
