cats purring also help them maintain bone mass. So veterinary and medical researchers are trying to find out why and if they can reproduce this to help their patients, both two legged and four. I've always wondered if subclinical infection with T. gondii could be tied to a human's affinity towards cats. Personally I wasn't much of a "cat person" until I started living with one, and once I did, I immediately became the primary poop-scooper of the household. I know it would be hard to pull apart what could be attributed to T. gondii versus the fondness that would naturally grow over time of being around a cat, caring for it, and getting affection from it as well. Still, I can't help but wonder if my cat has parasitically hacked my brain to love it more... seems like something my cat would do.

Toxoplasmosis doesn't occur in the typical person. We only really worry about it in pregnant women because it is it is vertically transmissible to baby if mom gets infected acutely just before or while pregnant. But really we see it in HIV. In fact once the CD4 count gets to a certain low level we get worried, because it's EVERYWHERE. *The Leeds University study* - that was my mother She was the zoologist looking after the mice in the study and taking the blood samples from the mice, collating the data etc - I don’t know if her name was on the paper but I guess so…
I have limited vision in my right eye due to toxoplasmosis. I guess my mom forgot to wash her hands. I only have peripheral vision in my right eye. It means I have some 3D vision, but I also have a weird blind spot. My depth perception is a bit screwed, and that eye doesn’t know what to do with brightness so it squints a lot.I have always loved to have a cat in my bed. Maybe that’s part of the mind control
No worries, yet. While there are these correlative studies linking cat ownership to possible negative effects, causation remains unproven. While there are many causative studies proving positive mental health to having a cat.
Well you don’t really have to worry. You are more likely to get it from eating uncooked meat, gardening, or eating unwashed fruit or vegetables than you are from a cat. Cats only shed the oocytst (eggs) for about 10-14 days if they are infected, and the oocysts are only infective if the poop has been sitting around for 1-5 days. (That is 10-14 days only out of their entire lives, and only if they’re infected.) indoor cats have little risk in less you have a rodent infestation, and if you do, you probably have other rodent-borne diseases you’ll want to worry about. so you can still love cats and be okay.😊👍🏻
It's all in your head. Maybe you're the one with the parasites from meat, unwashed vegetables, not washing your hands, and whatever else you come into contact with. Take care of your pinworms and ascaris, flukes, whipworms, tapeworms, etc etc. Ok?
Another criticism here is that people with tendencies to mental disorders might simply have cats more often. Depressive tendencies -> cat friend -> more toxoplasmosis
Robin Beyer What if you keep clean you and your cat as well as give it proper maintence, and regular vet visits. Depressive tendencies -> good cat friend+responsibility-> a bit of happiness in your life. When ever I see lulu(cat) rolling around, acting silly, being ridiculous, and sleeping cutely which is practically(very possibly) everyday I see her I get warmth and happiness fillme soo much that I dont worry about my stress.
Ty Scishow! One of your older videos on the subject introduced me to it, and this year I made toxoplasmosis the focus of my graduation work in upper secondary school. Being therefore heavily researched in the subject this video taught me nothing, but it well presented either way. Good job!
My adopted sister has said that when she was a kid she had ate her cat's poop. She currently has an array of mental disorders. I know correlation does not equal causation, but it is kinda alarming.
Actually, to get toxoplasmosis from a cat, the eggs have to ferment for about 3 days in cat's poop before you put them in your mouth. Also, the cats only poop out the eggs once after eating the infected animal. It's much easier and much, MUCH more likely you'll get toxoplasmosis from eating raw meat or a salad that wasn't washed properly. This unfair association between toxoplasmosis and cats rather than raw food leads to lots of cats being abandoned, especially after the owner gets pregnant. Anyway, at least you said there's no reason for that at the end of the video. Sorry about my English, it's not my first language.
How can we be certain that you aren’t infected, and the virus is making you lure us into a false sense of security so that we can then get infected and be assimilated into the hive 🤔
Toxoplasma gondii may be linked to chronic depression. The immuno-response that it elicits from the body ends up directly degrading Tryptophan through NK Natural Killer cells, Tryptophan being something Toxoplasma gondii depends upon to survive. Degradation of Tryptophan is not only linked to depression but also Schizophrenia.
As long as you wash your hands after you scoop kitty poop and you keep your cat indoors you'll be just fine. If you're an unhygienic person and you have outside cats... might wanna go see a doctor.
+Lawrence Clarkson Letting your cat roam free and kill is cruel for birds. In areas with coyotes, it's better to keep a cat indoors anyway to keep them from ending up on the coyotes menu.
It's worth noting a few things: -T. gondii affects mouse behavior mostly by removing their ability to smell cat pee, not making them run towards cats or anything. -About half of the world population and a tenth of the US population has this infection. About 80% of France has it (or this used to be the case), mostly from undercooked meat. -As others mentioned, you're more likely to get this from food, not cats. Cook meat fully (or just stop eating meat) and rinse veggies. An infected cat isn't always shedding oocysts and when they are, those need to sit around in the soil for a while. So if you clean the litter box daily, there's less risk. Still, women are advised to not clean litter boxes while pregnant just to be safe. This is because toxo is usually a problem if a woman is exposed for the first time while pregnant (leading to congenital toxoplasmosis in the baby).
My cats eat what ever meat I cook for myself. One is 20 in human years and has never had a wild animal or packet food and yet he still runs around with my youngest who's 6 human years
Great episode! Would you guys ever do an episode just about parasites it humans? And how using diatomaceous earth works to get rid of the parasites? Thanks!
Julius Xeno Yes, you can get tested to see if you have had or currently have a T. gondii infection. However, they don't usually test for it unless you are at risk for serious illness or are displaying symptoms of serious illness. For example, if you have AIDS, your immune system will be compromised, and you will be at risk for serious illness. Keep in mind it is much more common to get toxoplasmosis from eating raw meat or unwashed fruits or unwashed vegetables than it is to get it from a cat.
There is no way to completely get rid of it, but if you are having symptoms there are medications that keep the parasite from roaming or reproducing. The parasite stays in your tissues, so most medicines can't effect it. There isn't really any cure until maybe nanobots.
+stolenrelic There actually is a way to get rid of the parasite, get rid of your cat. The parasites life-cycle depends on having a cat around to complete, and without a cat around to keep reinfecting you, the parasites will eventually go away from a human, for the most part. The cysts that can POSSIBLY "infect you for life" are the dormant inactive state of the parasite, which doesn't cause the same symptoms as the active parasites. Though, they can cause problems of their own. Just one more reason to get rid of the source of your exposure as soon as possible though.
+nunyobiznez The parasite can reproduce asexually in humans, even without having a cat. Also, you're more likely to get the disease from not washing your hands, working in gardens, or eating undercooked meat and unwashed foods, than you are getting it from your cat. Getting rid of your cat is also quite cruel. They do get emotionally attached to people.
Maybe a immune response may be the very reason for the damage to the brain following toxoplasmosis infection And there may be people “infected” with toxoplasmosis antibodies but with no ongoing cysts , and potentially people classed as not infected that do not have an immune response to the parasite but have cysts
Ok sO i've had some very odd neurological symptoms for a long time now. Odd sensations that come from my head and go through body like a huge electrical pulse, Gasping for air when I'm sleeping, Shortness of breath during the day, Not being able to feel parts of my body (left side mostly) and whole body as well. Feeling like I'm not INSIDE my own body or that it's not mine. My brain pays too much attention of my heart (not thinking about it though) and when it doesn't feel it beat there's a sensation (not a good one) that goes through my body when it doesn't feel a heartbeat. Violent muscle jerks as I'm about to fall asleep. Odd sensations as I'm about to fall asleep. Feeling of extreme weakness in my lower part of body mostly legs more so at night now but it has done it in the morning as well. Severe anxiety at times. Feeling of terror or extreme fear for no reason throughout the day (absolutely terrifying and I'm not just worried it forces me to feel this way). Feeling of a lot of pressure inside my skull (between brain and skull it feels like). Sometimes the pressure or tingly feeling is only inside the back of my head. Feels like things crawling around in my entire body I can see my lower chest and upper stomach moving in and out without me breathing. My calve muscles I can physically see them moving. Extreme confusion at times with a huge impact on vision to the point where it almost goes out completely at the same time (honestly feels like I'm having a stroke or something) at random times. Changes within my own character, lack of aggression (only when I need it). Tremendous bloating to the point where stomach is distended about 3 inches after even a small meal. Anal itching at night time. Worms coming out of my nose (white slugy looking ones). Feels like something pushing out of my ears at times although I don't think anything has came out (yet). Feels like something moving around near my heart. Severe insomia can't even sleep for more than 2 hours after staying up for 30 hours with pharma drugs. Feels like stuff moving around in my nose and worms coming out of my nose. Face twitching at night only when I'm about to fall asleep making frowny faces. Feeling of general exhaustion lay in bed most days some months. Also when I used to drink beer these symptoms would all get like 5x as bad (the neurological ones) so I quit that. I've seen a sleep doctor, a neurologist, a GP, a pulmonologist and they've ran an EEG, ambulatory EEG, An EKG, Blood tests, MRI ( on my head) and catscan on my head as well and found nothing. But this was like 1 1/2 - over 2 years ago. I had only the neurological symptoms as described until recently the pressure inside head as well as insomnia, anal itching, distended stomach. These are the recent ones. Any help would be much appreciated.
It could be a parasite but some of your simptoms are very similar to panic sindrome. U should see a heart doctor and a psychiatrist. You can also go to a espiritual healer, they can explain some things medicine still can't. Good luck and send news! Don't give up on your health
The first time I heard toxoplasma what's a video that claimed the whole reason humans tried to domesticate the cat and it became such a large part of our human culture even prior to the Egyptians was probably linked to this parasite
This paracite is the reason why I'm blind in my left eye. My birth giver touched cat feces while pregnant, and now I experience excruciating pain first thing in the morning, almost every morning of my life, due to chronic conjunctivitis crystals getting under my eyelids when I have to pluck them from my lashes. It's like sand in your eye but bigger and more jagged. I also experience something I've coined known as disability dysphoria. Similar to gender dysphoria, but it basically means that, yes, my disability gets me down. And that is ok. It is ok to be upset about being unable to do certain things, but it doesn't make me a waste of human potential to be so mopey. Nor should I have to become "superhuman" to prove my worth, like some kind of inspiration p*rn that conservatives like to use to be so hard on people who are already having a hard time. In time, I hope enough people will listen to me in my future practice as an obstetrician/paediatrician one day: don't handle cat sh*t if you're pregnant or this will happen 😉
So I just cleaned out a cat litter box that's had poop in it for like a week. It's smelled awful, can I get this disease airborne? Should I be worried? I didn't touch anything directly. But I don't want to go blind lmao. When would I start seeing symptoms?
I had it in 2014 and gave me severe cystic acne. I remember being very depressed and impulsive. The doctors didn't give me anything and my immune system eventually fought it out.
@zlvno well I couldn't sleep after reading that 🙃 now I gotta do some bloodwork and check my eyes. Even tho it was 10 years ago I'm paranoid now and 8 months pregnant even tho everything has been fine and normal since then.
Oh geeeze! So what about that damn litter dust that kicks up when scoopin poops?? I try my best to hold my breath and stay away from the dust but 2 cats , 1 box is allot of clean up.
My mom got toxoplasmosis whilst still in the womb at around the third trimester. It attacked her eyes and she’s ended up with poor eye sight and crap depth perception without her glasses. Apparently if it attacked even the slightest bit more to side in one of her eyes it would’ve gotten to her retina and she’d be blind in that eye. I always thought it was some kind of disease that just presented differently since it infected her before birth. I had no idea it was a parasite. Glad for this video.
Too much Gabba has also been shown to be linked to intensive dancing as well as "angry neighbor syndrome", which frequently results in property damage and can even lead to blunt force trauma!

Thank you for this. My cat got into a fight with my sisters cat a few days ago and accidentally bit me when i tried to break them up. It punctured the skin on my hand and there was saliva all over the wound area. I washed it thoroughly right away, but i was concerned about the transfer of this.
Have they measured mental patients to see if the percentage of infected is higher than the norm for society as a whole? Is there any sort of "cure" for an infection?

My depth perception is a bit screwed, and that eye doesn’t know what to do with brightness so it squints a lot.I have always loved to have a cat in my bed. Maybe that’s part of the mind control
I want to get my son a cat but now I'm having doubts and I'm only 1 minute into the video
can you test for toxoplasmosis gondii?
This is honestly terrifying :( WHY CAN'T I LOVE CATS AND BE OK
No worries, yet. While there are these correlative studies linking cat ownership to possible negative effects, causation remains unproven. While there are many causative studies proving positive mental health to having a cat.
Mahoole Magic School, because not being ok mentally is necessary to be capable of developing love for a cat. No sane person can love cats.
Note that it's only proven because we can't infect humans with T. gondii and monitor changes.
Douglas Pupper no sane person can love a dog either
I always knew there was something up with cat owners
It's all in your head. Maybe you're the one with the parasites from meat, unwashed vegetables, not washing your hands, and whatever else you come into contact with. Take care of your pinworms and ascaris, flukes, whipworms, tapeworms, etc etc. Ok?

She better get a Toxoplasmosis test then :O
If your sister was eating cat poop, i think it's safe to say the mental disorders were already there before hand...
Black walnut and wormwood extract can help with this infection and others.
Pri Correia Try to at least make a couple of mistakes when you're apologizing about your English skills, you're making us 'mericans look bad. ;-)
Unwashed produce still means the cat was around this parasite cannot sexually ineract without the cat!
Cats are disease vectors, and need to be exterminated.

Chris where did you read this, I'm intrigued...
Why didn't you mention that pigeons also transmit it??
Great, way to make me paranoid about cats. Damn it, I need to pet cat to calm my nerves.

Also don't breath while doing the cat box. There's dust.
Lawrence Clarkson My cat has always been scared of the outdoors. She's never been outside even when I've put her outside myself.
+Lawrence Clarkson Letting your cat roam free and kill is cruel for birds. In areas with coyotes, it's better to keep a cat indoors anyway to keep them from ending up on the coyotes menu.
So … how is it treated???
It's worth noting a few things:
-T. gondii affects mouse behavior mostly by removing their ability to smell cat pee, not making them run towards cats or anything.
Stop believing fear porn.
The French have it? It all makes sense...
My cats eat what ever meat I cook for myself. One is 20 in human years and has never had a wild animal or packet food and yet he still runs around with my youngest who's 6 human years

Please don't do this and spread the word. No need to throw a cat out, just don't be the one cleaning the litter box while you are pregnant.
But is there a cure or a way to be screened
Julius Xeno Yes, you can get tested to see if you have had or currently have a T. gondii infection.
However, they don't usually test for it unless you are at risk for serious illness or are displaying symptoms of serious illness.
For example, if you have AIDS, your immune system will be compromised, and you will be at risk for serious illness.
Keep in mind it is much more common to get toxoplasmosis from eating raw meat or unwashed fruits or unwashed vegetables than it is to get it from a cat.
stolenrelic ok thanks
+nunyobiznez
The parasite can reproduce asexually in humans, even without having a cat.
Also, you're more likely to get the disease from not washing your hands, working in gardens, or eating undercooked meat and unwashed foods, than you are getting it from your cat.
Getting rid of your cat is also quite cruel. They do get emotionally attached to people.
I just found out I have it and my baby possibly has it at 22 weeks pregnant. Not fun at all and I don’t even own a cat.

I heard the cats wanted to be domesticated by humans so they mimicked human baby cry or women cry with their meowing
