Townes would have loved the Dude. Only Townes could cover a Stones song and make it his own. RIP Townes, a Texas star that burned so bright and too short of a life.
.. back in 2010, late November my Aorta blew apart on a Saturday.. around noon. they call it a type A aortic dissection and it kills dudes at least 80% of the time, if not immediately, then during surgery.... a week later, after the open heart surgery, they were finally successful in waking me up for a couple of minutes.... My angel said that my family were all worried sick and waiting with bated breath to know how I was doing.... if I was gonna live... She asked What can I tell them. I said I love you baby. Tell them the dude abides...smiled and fell into sleep again... Thank you dude, for the smiles and good feelings. We love you man. Townes, brother, the same is true for you.
From a Rolling Stone article on how T. Bone Burnett secured the rights to this song: A tougher get was Townes Van Zandt’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers,” which plays over Lebowski‘s closing credits. “[Former Stones manager] Allen Klein owns the rights to it,” Burnett says. “He wanted $150,000.” Burnett begged Klein to just come down and watch an early cut of Lebowski. “It got to the part where the Dude says, ‘I hate the fuckin’ Eagles, man!’ Klein stands up and says, ‘That’s it, you can have the song!’ That was beautiful.” For the record, Burnett agrees with the Dude (“[The Eagles] sort of single-handedly destroyed that whole scene that was brewing back then,” he says), but the line infuriated Glenn Frey. “I ran into [Frey] and he gave me some shit,” Jeff Bridges says. “I can’t remember what he said exactly, but my anus tightened a bit.”
This cover of the Stones hit, Dead Flowers, is a Townes Van Zandt masterpiece, no one else can top Townes. The Coen Brothers were wise to have this song to end The Big Lebowski or The Dude movie, as I call it, lol 😂I am a huge fan of TVZ, Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steven Buschemi, Julienne Moore, everyone in that movie, especially Jesus 😅Just recently got a beautiful new persian rug that really ties the room together.❤ Watched The Big Lebowski last week, again, can never get tired of this movie, or Townes Van Zandt ❤❤❤
I love when I hear Townes in a random show or film..I've heard his stuff in at least 2 tv shows and 4 movies. Sometimes I like the fact it ain't so well known...even though he is clearly the greatest ever. Hell of Wheels used Waitin' around to Die...really cool version from his Far Cry From Dead album.
I sat up alone in my almost completely empty bedroom with just a mattress and small bedside drawer one night, spent my last money on a bottle of Kahlua, very shitty vodka ($22 AUD) and milk, and watched this drinking White Russians all night. Felt more wholesome then I have in a long night. Live your best life friends.
Watch this vid about 4 times a week. Takes me into the vibe of the movie's ending every time. Sometimes, you just have to abide. Had a conversation with a friend today who dreams about owning an orchard one day. She said "Did I tell you, I came up with a name! Abiding Orchards." I told her it was excellent. To me it meant an orchard that abides by the laws of creation. Didn't realize until I got home that she was actually thinking about the adjective form of "abiding" : (of a feeling or a memory) lasting a long time; enduring. I think the two go hand in hand. Today deepened my appreciation for the verb AND the adjective. Abide abidingly my friends.
Great edit with Townes' cover. And I speak as a three-time winner of the Best Walter trophy at LebowskiFests: LA 2005 and 2007, and NYC 2006. You done good.
Its Sunday morning March 10th 2024...And i just wanted to start todays "service" with a song and a prayer.. I do hope you will join me. " best movie ever,BTW".......wasnt intended on blasphemous sound.... Have a great Sunday Lebowskians!
Something about this song is so sad to me. I guess it's the theme of being disappointed in one's life's outcome - so much so that the person in question is ashamed to see someone from their past that they were once close with. Hits close to home for me lol and I'm sure many others
The Late Great Mr. Townes Van Zany ladies and gentleman. May have also heard a little song called Poncho Y Lefty. Watch him on Heart Worn Highways with a teenage Steve Earl

Ergus
The Dude abides. I don’t know about you, but I take comfort in that. It’s good knowin he’s out there, takin ‘er easy for all us sinners. Well, that about does it, wraps it all up. And It was a pretty good story. Don't you think? It made me laugh to beat the band. Parts, anyway. I didn't like seein' Donny go. But, then I happen to know that there's a little Lebowski on the way. I guess that's the way the whole durned human comedy keeps perpetuatin' itself down through the generations. Westward the wagons, across the sands of time until we - ah, look at me. That's the key to abiding. Sometimes you have to be okay with the curve balls life throws you, and sometimes okay is okay.
Nicely done. Still one of those films you can never get enough of.
Great job putting a song by the greatest singer on Earth in the greatest movie on Earth
Coen brothers are good at that. Between BL and No country for old men you are talking about the two best made films in history.

Talkin' to some rich folks that you know
Well, I hope you don't see me in my ragged company
Well, you know I could never be alone
Take me down, little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the queen of the underground
Send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flowers by the mail
Send me dead flowers to my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
Well, when you're sitting back in your rose pink Cadillac
Making bets on Kentucky Derby Days
Ah, I'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon
And another girl to take my pain away
Take me down, little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the queen of the underground
Send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flowers by the mail
Send me dead flowers to my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
Take me down, little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the queen of the underground
Send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flowers by the mail
Say it with dead flowers in my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
