Always remember running through that first hall of barrels when I was a kid, felt the same as running up your basement stairs when the lights were off and you were getting chased by a monster. Same exact feeling.
9:34 it was imp's fireball. Imp's AI targeted you right when you took the teleporter and the fireball noclipped through the wall. Two rare things managed to happen one after another. Now that's luck xD
The fact that you were hit by a clipping imp ball just at the same time you teleport was incredible. Reminds me of your hell revealed map 31 video where something similar happen, but this time a hell knight clipping fireball hit a revenant and it also killed him.
You know this will be fun when the outake footage is about as long the time it took for you to finish the map. Excellent job. This map is not for the faint of heart with fast monsters. The pain elementals would drive me up the wall.
This map reminds me of some "barrel puzzles" I've seen - these were levels from the earliest days of Doom mapping, which were basically edited original game maps with lots and lots of barrels added in (very tightly, considerably limiting movement, forcing you to move barrels by carefully shooting them with the pistol). The player's goal was to reach the exit without blowing themselves up. They didn't have nearly as much combat as MAP23, of course. The music - for those that haven't heard the original song, it's "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains. Bobby Prince's rendition is, as always, spot-on.
People underestimate this map because from its first room it's so obviously a gimmick map, but then that same room becomes one of the most chaotic meat grinders in all of Doom 2 once the side walls open
It definitely is one of the Doom maps of all time. Seriously though, this map is one of those that make Doom II the classic that it is. It’s not necessarily good, but it is unique and memorable.
@@Astfgl You can say whatever you want about Sandy maps of D2, but even at it lowest almost all them have something unique and memorable. And the highs are really highs in terms of fun and creativity. Can't say the same about Romero maps in D2 for example. Even if his maps are more "correct" they're average at best and forgettable at worst.
He did it again, but ended up suffering a little in the process. Never underestimate turbo pinkies. Next stop, The Chasm... good luck out there Decino, you will need it.
I will be honest I was laughing when you were ranking the difficulties of the remaining maps and this one got ranked easy, was hoping the vid will be like this and it seems like it was worth the wait!
I finally tried pistol starting all of Doom II last year, and yep, this was the map that caused me more deaths than every other map *combined.* It is seriously underestimated for its difficulty IMHO. I blame the barrel and spider memes for overshadowing it. Thanks Sandy :P
I never realized how often noclip projectiles happened with the original blockmaps. It's at least once every video of yours, this is insane. I suppose few people actually played with fast monsters back then.
Blowing up barrels, blasting away demons and dodging turbo pinkies. So much to love about this map. Okay, maybe not the lost souls, but everything else.
I actually like such idea of a map filled with barrels to a brim so you will have to run like crazy when monsters shoot. Also this chain reaction of exploding barrels is nice to watch.
Probably one of the most iconic levels in Doom, at least imo. Great run, the wall of pinkies and accidental teleport back to earlier in the level were exhilarating and hilarious.
This level is harder on PS1 version imo as there is a chaingunner instead of a mancubus in the starting arena. He dies quicker but he also fires quicker. Then add in the fact that there were no analogue sticks on the controller back when the game released and thus it was actually very easy to get caught on the barrels when trying to run away.
Jesus!! If there is one thing that's even more legendary than your Doom skills is your absolutely insane luck with no-clipping projectiles. Those are some astronomical odds and yet it has happened to you at least twice by now that I remember.
Woah that no clipping Imp fire ball was suspiciously well aimed! Sailed over the head of the Hell Knight and then found you at the perfect time? That's computers taking over. We were warned of this back when The Terminator first came out.
That *max damage noclipping imp fireball that flew through 3 walls* (judging by the automap) was absolutely epic 😂 So... Most likely he was trying to attack, decino conviniently changed position by teleporting and stars aligned (or maybe it was caused by imp's infighting) And 3:34 Yes, game felt "I'm not worried about this" and tried to create "jinxed" moment If unsecuring "too much" wasn't said, chaingunners at the end would cause more outtakes, I'm pretty sure You can't trick me, you exploring luck and it's relation with voice and thoughts in doom, it was all on purpose !
You can also spam berserk punch on the pinky wall of death. Get yourself snug in one of the corners at the top of the steps and hold attack. You might get bit once, but generally it's a safe way to cheese it 😁
@@decino oh I forgot the nightmare setting. I'll have to try it and see. Something about being on the top step in the corner, they can't reach like normal
@@decino so I tried it, it works. From the bottom corner too. Their speed doesn't change the bottleneck (only 1 can ever seem to reach you in the corner)
9:32 Wow. That angle was perfect. This actually got me to fire up the map just to see how this would work? Is it possible for an imp to lock on to you, then you teleport away before it fires, then the fire trigger occurs when you're already at the new destination and it fires at that position instead? Otherwise, an infighting imp just happened to have a target at the right depth and in the right direction, yet the target still managed to dodge the attack, the fireball clipped through two walls, and came down shallow enough to miss the hell knight but still sharp enough hit you exactly at the teleport position. Either way, that's incredible. So glad you got that recorded!
Excellent video that noclipping imp fireball . But yeah as I've said before me playing on ultra violence this level can get ya sometimes that second room with the hell Knights and chaingunners that got me a couple of times if your unlucky and the pinky wall of death can mess you up equally because I do continuous play for me it depends on how well I ended the last level in the sense of how much health and ammo I have. still great fun to watch and with that as always cheers for upload decino
I had that strange feeling when you said after Map 22 that rest of maps should be easy, except maybe Map 29, I'm like Map 23's start should be pretty brutal on nightmare up to the fast pinkies area + fast potatoes spawning those annoying flaming skulls blocking your way + you who gets 100% items - collecting those bonuses should prove annoying. And it seemed crazy like i thought it would be!
8:44 i love this part that angry pinky attack imp killer It's very funny leve as it is also instantly lethal to die with pinky dead wall or Lost soul spam.
hell yes one of my favorite maps are all freaking time barrel'o fun or as I call it American's pie barrel of freaking fun. All I can say I love it this map don't know why I just love it especially the music it makes me pump out to action. Rock and roll baby
This is the one Doom 2 map I find an absolute chore to play through, even on UV. The Chasm and the city levels are actually quite fun imo, but I dread this level each playthrough.
The very first time I entered this map I almost saved in the beginning (like on every previous map). But at the last moment I saw some flame. It was the Mancubus fireball...
This map always fuck me up with the Pain elemental area and the lack of hp until after beating the mastermind (I normally leave the megasphere for later) Nice to see someone good doing it
This is one of the levels that really stuck with me from my childhood. So abstract and surreal, more like an actual nightmare than an attempt to represent a real physical space
The meme map that keeps providing. I think you're taking the Coincident curse Decino. Don't say that something is easy or should happen because the opposite will be happening. Also. That Imp Fireball that clipped through the walls was the real champion of the video.
Haha it definitely looks like a matter of getting finished with a terribly difficult map and going into this one like it’s a joke and underestimating it a bit 😂 love this series!
It's about at this point Id embraced the silly side of map making. Not that this is the best in its department, but it's probably the first well-known one. I like memes, too.
I also think this isnt a particularly difficult map, but there are a lot of do or die sections. It Doom 2's most fun map, tho! also lmao that clipping fireball
It was this map that, while playing this highly anticipated game in 1994, made me admit to myself that I didn't like Doom2's abstract map design. Tricks and Traps made me question it, Barrels o Fun convinced me. And I hadn't even played The Chasm yet 😅.
Outtakes ‘o Fun. 😁 I’m such a n00b to think that the Pain Elemental room would have given you the most grief. The latter part of the map is a complete cakewalk though. It’s not a particularly nice-looking or well designed map, but it’s a bona fide classic in its chaotic and goofy gimmickry.
Barrels o' Fun? More like Pinkies of Chaos. Those Lost Souls also proved why they are A tier threats. At 9:34 it looks like it was a no-clipping Imp fireball.

I like this theory
its hilarious the way hes talk and mid sentence, gets hit by the fireball and just shuts up and dashes
i mean the title ain’t lying. exploding barrels are fun
Exploding barrels that respawn? Frustration?
Both of you are correct

The music transition during the outtakes at 8:10 though
I am quite enjoying how you record each attempt like it is the final one, so we get commentary on even the failed run outtakes.
Well I mean how else would he do it?
Every attempt is intended to be the final one after all.
People underestimate this map because from its first room it's so obviously a gimmick map, but then that same room becomes one of the most chaotic meat grinders in all of Doom 2 once the side walls open
"The Pinkie Wall of Death" *proceeds to die to everything but the pinkies themselves*
Imagine if that noclipping fireball hit the barrels. Good job Mr pumpkinhead man, you truly are a rockstar at this!
This map legitimately gave me a headache when trying to UV Max pistol start. Also, that outake with the Imp no clip fireball was interesting.
