    Just stumbled across your channel as a fellow Sydney-sider, across the bridge in a 2 bedroom, outrageously priced art deco dog box. You are fun, entertaining, and just what everyone needs in these strangely changing times.

      Well hello neighbour! haha your description 'art deco dog box' got me laughing 😂 (sometimes I think humour is what we hang onto when all else seems a little...wonky-sideways-heck-a-moly!) Thank you for watching Dominique! 😍 I'm glad you enjoyed my video - so glad you get the little jokes too! Hope you have a great week, and I wish you the best of success and joy here 😊

    Very informative. I lived in the Sydney area in the 70's and it was wonderful. I rented a cute little flat in Manly for $35 dollars a week with a Frangipani Tree out front. Feel for you having to pay outrageous rents. We used to pool our money and rent a big house on the beach that had 5 bedrooms. Good times. Great music and great neighbors. I like your videos, you have a good voice, great info and do not chatter like many do. Subscribing now. I miss Australia. Living in the States.

      Oh wow times have changed, right? ha! Share housing with good folk can be such a fun experience! I'm so glad you have this memory - the Frangipani trees have such a distinct scent too (and that white sap gets everywhere if we don't pay attention HA! Ah well, natural perfume? heehee). Thank you for watching and I appreciate your kind feedback too - I'm happy you're enjoying my videos! 😍

    innerwest should be better lots of cafe plus bigger and new apartments and you can still uber. Only thing at CBD is like high-end stores, PUB / BARS and Thai restaraunts.

      Thanks Rachan for your comment 🙏 With prices the way they are, moving further out from the CBD is definitely worth looking into! I'd like to check it all out myself in future - love the sound of great cafes and new apartments! haha

    I landed a job in Sydney starting in February... and am now scrambling to figure out whether or not I can actually afford to live there, or if I should go for the not-so-great job I've been offered in Melbourne 😅

    • @AussieGem
      @AussieGem  11 місяців тому

      Congrats on the job! That's great!😃It's a rough market, and Sydney has copped the brunt of accommodation shortage across Australia. Melbourne and Brisbane are also getting smashed unfortunately. If it's a WFH capable role, that would be ideal and allow the option of looking to less dense/cheaper accomm. If it was me, I would go with the work/job that lights me up more, as that will be a more long-term impact and help manage the otherwise cost of living issues that are just about everywhere! Hope you find the answer that resonates best with you, and all the best with moving (it's exciting and also holy-heck-a-mole hahaha!) 😅

      @GemmaLaurelleAdventures Thanks for the advice. It's a big decision, but it'll be fine whatever I choose, so I'm not stressing too much. Just enjoying the pain of window shopping for flats in Sydney 🙃

    @zacjohnson8404 Рік тому +1

    is there anything about Sydney that makes it expensive other than housing costs?
    cheers

    • @AussieGem
      @AussieGem  Рік тому

      Hi Zac - thank you for watching! 🙂 Yes, there are a few items on the expensive list HA! Entertainment and eating out, are quite costly. The prices are higher than more out-of-city areas (eg. movie tickets $31 regular/$33 4D seat in CBD Event Cinemas, compare $19.50 at Wollongong NSW or Noosa cinema QLD) . The lack of farmers' markets, means relying on the bigger grocery stores (Coles/Woolies mostly in the city, some IGA shops) for household food/items. The big-chain stores charge higher prices for veggies & fruit than farm-to-market stalls, so that raises the overall cost of weekly shopping runs. Parking costs are high in the CBD (from $25 Wilson/Park&Save in CBD, drops to $14 in outer suburb like Chatswood, and cheaper beyond), compared to suburbs/regional areas which have free parking/street/free-permit areas. It's the overall accumulation of these higher prices, which make overall cost of living higher, over and above the high rental prices. Hope this helps, if you're looking to move! 🙂

    What Noo 😥 you gave me stress 😅 i ll be in Sydney CBD for my master’s by sep and my lil research tells me that $1k is sufficient for a single occupancy room now this is like a shock for me ! What would you suggest, where and how can i get a single occupancy room in my budget, I’m not really looking to spend more than a K a month 😬

    • @AussieGem
      @AussieGem  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Salman - wooo yes, renting will definitely need research! Also, welcome to Sydney soon! 🙂 Sharing an inner city (CBD) apartment is going to be the most affordable way to live here. If you know someone already, or can join a Facebook group for city living, that would be the best way to privately secure a cheaper room to live - I found this FB group to be a good place to find people to team with/spare rooms: facebook.com/groups/1637070896565373.
      The outer suburbs will always be cheaper for a room (eg. $250 a week), but for a city apartment it will mean looking carefully and securing a room as early as you can. All the best with your hunt - you've got time, so should have better luck than a last-minute rush

    Moving back to Sydney from LA after years in New York in London. Sydney is expensive because the standard of living is so high, much like Vancouver, etc. The point is you need money. I'm going back to a promotion and more money than I got in the US, You need London-style Tech and Finance salaries to make it there, cause living out in the burbs is complete sh*t.

      Hi Bikash - Westfield in Sydney 2000 sounds like you're looking for a place in the CBD? (Westfield is a brand of shopping mall/business), so a handy way to find a place nearby is a rental site like: www.realestate.com.au/
      The closest suburbs will be Sydney, Potts Point, Woolloomooloo, Pyrmont, Haymarket and Darlinghurst - as these are very close walking distance to Westfield, about 5-10minutes walk for most. Happy hunting! 😊👍

    Hi Gemma.. your video is very informative and helpful to me. I will move in the end of November this year for WHV. Would it is possible to get a rent or sharehouse at that time because now I hear that it is so difficult to rent? Would you mind to rwcommend me some renthouse/sharehouse/apartment that I can book in advance?

    • @AussieGem
      @AussieGem  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching Langkah! The best solution to my mind, to find a rental, is to join the Sydney Sharehouse group on FB (facebook.com/groups/1637070896565373). There are always people looking for sharemates at different times and for places in and around the city centre. Welcome to Sydney in November! 😊
