A buddy recommended a Harley Benton to me a few years ago. It’s now my main stage guitar. Plays great, and stays in tune. Sold a Washburn I wasn’t playing much and bought two more.
@@grumpyitcushmeta4riaproduc189 I own a bunch of guitars, American Standard Strat and Vintage Tele were my gigging guitars for years. I own a few HB (all good guitars, excellent value)…one of my favorite guitars to play is HB SC-450 P90. I paid $123 for it
I think that's the reason it is better to talk about objectively cheap than 'affordable' because subjectively if you are elon musk, entire guitar making companies doesn't worth a shit to you :) high end guitars are more expensive, but cheaper guitars are better than ever....a lot of gems in asian production up to 200 dollars or euros, but the one needs to be able to find them and get valuable info online about them before purchase....
Affordable to me includes consistent quality. Better to spend a little more and get it ready to go out of the box then have to spend as much or more to make it playable
It doesn't matter how much guitar prices have gone up if the purchaser's income hasn't matched the increase in prices. Therefore, if $300 to $500 was a particular buyer's "affordable" price point, then it probably still is.
I got the yellow Jem Jr for $424. It was sold as a blemished item because they didn't sand the inside of the Monkey Grip. I was going to put DiMarzio pickups in it but liked the stock ones enough to leave them in and save some money. I did however, swap in a Gotoh GE1996T tremolo and it made a difference over the stock tremolo. I also added green knobs, a pink switch cap and painted the claw area pink so it looks more like Steve's Jem.
I'd say half of my guitars are used, And I got them for a great price. So, players should consider a deal like $500 on a former $1500 new. That's a great way to get a great guitar
From Jeremy: you are spot on on your assessment of the price of “budget” increasing lately. I love Squier guitars because they are easily modified or played as is and it’s crazy to think that certain ones that cost $150 are now $300 to $350! That Jem and the LTD guitar you showed is absolutely sick!! I gotta get me maybe both of those!!
PRS SE CE 24, picked up one on sale… sure there’s the cheaper standard, but PRS to me has to have that flame top, and the black cherry finish is gorgeous with the natural binding and black back. Sire Larry Carlton guitars are also really great for the money, possibly better than Mexican Fenders. I have the T3 and S5.
Yeah PRS SE are almost unbeatable for the price. No matter what model. I’m really not a fan of the Fender Player series right now. They feel cheap to me. Much prefer the Vintera line. I miss the old days MIM standard Tele or Strat for $500 new. They were really solid guitars.
I bought a beat up ‘91 Charvel Avenger at Guitar Center in Virginia Beach in ‘05 for $150. Beat to shit but plays and sounds great. Almost 20 years later and I still play it more than all my Gibsons, Jacksons etc….
I remember your Firebird video, it made me buy the Epi bird. It is a great guitar! I do want to add a Dano to my collection. I agree, the Dano is a must have in every collection.
What you do is you buy a cheap guitars. Then you take a dollar store craft wood saw and carve out the arm rest to look like a schecter. Then carve the horns to look like an ibanez. Then you cut the headstock to look like something else. Then you paint it. Slap some other pickups in it. No one will know what it is. So they'll ask. Then you just make up something about it being a custom. Just makenit look cool enough that you want to pick it up a lot. Whatever you do to the body of the guitar just makes sure you paint and clear coat it after. My favorite guitar to do this with is some cheap strat copy from Canada.
It's really all in the setup. (Electronics not necessarily) I've played LP's I wouldn't give you a dollar for, and a GIO set up by a pro that just brought tears to my eyes. 🤷♂️
I agree, the Epiphone Firechicken is a great buy, I purchased the Olive Drab. It's tall and wants a bass case or gig bag. The Jem Jr. though, HSH I don't own any HSH guitars and it's just wrong. The Horror.
I like the Danelectro because it does what I call a fake Rickenbacker sound. Throw a compressor, mild modulation, reverb and roll down the tone a bit you’ve got the Byrds the Beatles, etc. You’re not going to shred on this guitar. You buy it for the vibe.
I would say budget guitars are from like $250 to $500. Maybe up to $600 because of some of the guitars that are $599. It seems like around $500 or $600 is where the instruments enter mid-level where the difference in price reflects options over craftmanship. My thoughts are the sub $250 guitars are entry and mod platforms. One thing I have noticed is once you get to $250 to $300, they start using better parts or materials. Anything over $1000 should be gig ready. Most of the time the difference in how a guitar is made varies more from $200 to $800 than $1000 to $2000.
All rad choices. I keep going back and forth between the Jem Jr and the 550. I know it's apples and oranges but I dig the look of the Jem Jr but regret getting rid of my blue 87 550 back in the early 2ks.
I have 15 guitars. I bought a brand new prs silver sky last year. Was the worst purchase I've ever made. I mean it's a nice guitar but almost 3 grand and you can get about half of that if you sell it. I mostly play my charvel and prs S2 custom 24. The charvel was like 1100 dollars.
Yeah, the affordable guitar market has changed recently. I'd say under $600 is a good cutoff price. Under $300 is just cheap, in most cases. So $300-$600 is the range I feel most people consider them affordable, but not cheap. Right now is a great time to shop for deals. There's some killer guitars priced to sell. If you stick with the main brand names, it's hard to go wrong. Peace!
Regarding the single bridge pickup guitars; I personally like to have two or three pickups even though I almost never use more than the bridge pickup.. so I get it either way
Great video sir as usual. I have the same chorus you do and i like the tona ya get, where in the chain do you put your chorus? I have heard some say in the effects loop and some in front of amp.
Most of my guitars are Epiphone, either Korean or Chinese. Never paid more than your affordable price range and love each one. I could never justify shelling out €1000 or more on gear for a home hobby. And that includes the expensive Epiphones they've been producing recently.
Baritones seem to be having a bit of a moment right now, but I think that something like a Squier Bass VI is really a more versatile choice than a baritone guitar that can be had for around five, or less if it's a sale item. Another really unique pick might be some of the Gretsch offerings as well.
@@plushuniverse1023 That is odd, I'm actually going to record a couple Monday a review of a piece of failed guitar gear that I am trying to find a use for on bass for one, and a guitar feature demoing some totally oddball fuzz pedals that sound a lot better than their names indicate. Affordable and Super Affordable, depending on budget. How many levels of Squier Strat's are there? Epiphone Les Paul's. They make a model in many price points, leading to Gibson prices, who have many price points, as well.
Look at Baker busting out "Kiss of Death" I used to jam on that song when it came out. I wanna say that was on the last Lynch album before Lynch Mob. We were booked to open for Lynch mob on their first tour but they ended up cancelling a few dates an New Orleans was one.
I suggest looking at the cheaper built guitars from the late 70’s, early 80’s. Tokai, aria pro, hondo, etc. these things are often plywood monstrosities, and need s little work. But, most of them play great, and sound great. I have a 1983 hondo 737, with “fake” humbuckers- single coils in a humbucker case- and it gives the best sound, for some unknown reason! I wrote an instrumentsl named “Hondo” with it, and loved the tones i got from that little 350.00 classic! You can check out the song on all streaming platforms-
I'd say affordable guitars should be under $500. Somethibg for students and first-time players. Above $500, you can really find some very good guitars that get you well into gigable/recordable territory.
Truth is, all guitars are budget guitars if you use the right definition of the word "budget". The same goes with the word "Affordable" as well.. In reality while prices went up, pay didn't go up to match the prices, at least not enough. So with that said, for a lot of people, their budget is lower now then it once was. I mean, think about it, everything is more expensive and the amount of money a lot of folks make didn't go up enough to match the increase costs.. So the outcome is not that they have more money to spend, but less money to spend. With that said, if I were going to break guitars down and do so honestly, I would break them down into brackets with a spacing of maybe 100 dollars-ish at the low end and 500 dollars at the high end. It would look something like this.. 50-100, 100-200, 200-300, 300-400, 400-500, and so on until I got up around a thousand dollars, then I would start increasing the bracket sizes, so something like 1,000-1,500, 1,500-2,000 then 2.000-3,000, 3,000-5,000 and so on and on... I could come up with brackets like that, but the idea is that the higher your budget the bigger range you would have. Of course you could play with them a bit, instead of having 2,000-3,000, you could do 300-3,000 because just because you have three grand to spend, doesn't mean the best guitar is closer to three thousand dollars for you....
Merry Christmas Robert to you & your's , Happy New Year too ! Looking forward to your new videos in the coming year... P.S. Remember SLOTTED SCREWS lol
I would have purchased that Epihone Firebird if it wasn’t for one detail that annoys me. Its the positioning of the tuners. I don’t care whether or not it has the banjo tuners. What annoys me is how the high E string goes down on an angle. The purpose of this type of headstock is to have all of the strings go straight to the tuners. Everything else is good.
I just saw the WCW Nitro shirt. Man, that takes me back to piling in front of the old CRT and turning on your Primestar satellite box to watch. Shit, I’m old 😅

In the “Unlimited budget” category, the Lizzy Hale Explorerbird was an absolute STUNNER. I ended up liking it so much I bought it and I NEVER thought I would spend that kind of money on a guitar again after dropping over 3 grand on a Music Man. Sometimes though an instrument or an amplifier comes along and just ignites something in you emotionally that you can’t describe and creates a bond with you that you can’t get enough of and just gives you so much inspiration and passion when you’re holding it. Those moments are exceptionally rare, but when they happen, you do whatever it takes to keep it in your life and not let it go.
