Today's video: Driving around downtown Modesto in the state of California. We'll come across: K st. 9th - 11Th St. to mention a few in Downtown. Please share some of the stories you have with this beautiful downtown of Modesto in the comment section below. I would love to hear about it. THANKS!.
Downtown Modesto affectionately called "DoMo" by many Modesto residents is the principal administrative area and the historic townsite of Modesto, California. Measuring a square mile, it is bordered by the Needham and Downey Streets to the north, Washington Street to the west, Sierra Drive and Morton Boulevard to the south, and Morton Boulevard and Burney Street to the east. The area has an approximate population of 3,138,[1] and is bisected by the California State Routes 99, 108, and 132.
    Early history
In 1870, when the location for Modesto was chosen, a square-mile townsite with streets parallel to the Southern Pacific railroad. The townsite's outer streets were aligned from north, east, west, and south, and its interior streets and alleyways were aligned with the railroad which ran diagonally. They ran from northwest and southeast, and northeast and southwest.
One of the first grand homes to be built in the site was the McHenry Mansion, built in 1883 for Robert McHenry and his wife Matilda Hewitt McHenry. It was styled in the Victorian-Italianate manner and was designed and built by Stockton architect-contractor Jeremiah Robinson.
By the dawn of the 1900s, early Modesto's streets were paved with asphalt.
In a so-called "attempt" to revitalize Downtown Modesto in the 1960s, many historic buildings were demolished, and few were spared.
    Residential Area
The residential area is south of 5th Street and east of G Street. Many Victorian, Italianate, Craftsman and Mission style homes are proudly mixed with elegant commerces in this lively modern downtown.

Thank you for that trip down memory lane. I moved to the Modesto area in 1978 following the Marine Corps and fortunately was hired by then Pacific Telephone, so I know these streets well. I spent 30 years with the company but spent my last 5 years in Sonora where I retired in 2008 and now live in Tucson AZ. Modesto was a great place to raise a family and live. I have nothing but fond memories of the area. Thanks, again, for the video.

@@jeffgrey663 Oh neat! I love this area! When visiting Tombstone, Bisbee or Cochise County, I like to have breakfast at the Farmer's Country Cafe, I think it's called. Nice little place. I settled here because my oldest son graduated from the University of Arizona. Now, my youngest graduated from there, as well. My middle son went to Stanislaus State and teaches in Ceres. Making decent money even back in the 90's and I ended up loving that place. I allways think about Modesto and hope that someday I can go back and visit there one more time...

At 15:26 you pass on the left (although you can’t see it) a bronze statue of an American native Indian on the street corner. My cousin was the model for the face. He was seen in a restaurant by the artist and was asked to pose for it. The body was not his. Me cousin was not that good of shape. He wasn’t paid. He did however get a miniature statuette of the final product.

I was homeless here for almost 2 1/2 months back in 2021, and, it was one of the best times or experience that I had in my life. I was around 31 years old back then. Everyday was like an adventure. Every people I meet is like meeting someone that was meant to be my partner or was meant to be there at that moment with me, whatever that moment was, no matter how crazy or simple, or normal, out of this world it was. Hahahahhaha. Went to prison many times and all of them has different unforgettable, memorable, and simply the b3st experience. Knighted by a 33rd Freemason, and this is just 10% or maybe 8% of the story. 😂😂😂😂

@@minirelish ..... My last message, I described Modesto as well as anyone on here. I lived in this area most of my life, but more favorable to nearby Turlock. Yes, there always better this, or that, but this is where my folks settled when coming from Ohio. Modesto is true Central California. Not far from the mountains, or the ocean. At this particular moment in time, Modesto is not looking its best, because of cut backs due to the virus, and the homeless everywhere. Truthfully, this is not a good time to fantasize where the best places to live. Not fair to those cities who are suffering now, and the many years it will take to recover. However, San Francisco in my opinion, has always been a shit hole place, with a few attractions. Whenever I leave that city, I can’t wait to get home. I go the country roads home, and when I smell the fertilizer, the silage, and the cow shit, I know I have arrived. I am a country boy, who likes his space. I like to scratch it where it itches ....🤠
