I've since followed the well trodden GH4 to GH5 to BMPCC 4k route, but the 70D is still my go to camera for stills work, and it holds its own for little bits of video now and again. I kept my 70D when the mirrorless cameras came out. The 20 megapixel is more than enough for printing 4x6’s, 8x10’s and everything online. If I need something higher I can always upscale. As a hobby, this works but for video at 1080. However, everything online looks great in 1080. If I need something more, there is also upscaling to 4K from 1080. To be honest, if you want great video, buy a video camera that shoots 4K. Otherwise if you are looking for those special cinematic looking film lenses, they make adapters. Okay, what am I trying to say here? If you are a photographer who takes pictures as a hobby and you are smart about your money, the 70D is the best option out there. It’s a workhorse of a camera for a few hundred (Dollars, Pounds, etc.). Lenses are dropping in price including the red ring primes. The newer cameras do make adaptors but if you go the new route, why not by the lens that is made for the new camera? If 4K is you ultimate goal in video, there is the Canon M50 for a few hundred. All of the 70D lenses will fit the M50. Or, the 90D shoots 4K however, it still costs full price. One issue with both Canon DSLR cameras for video is that after 29.9 minutes, they turn off recording. If live blogging, this is an issue. I would suggest a real video camera that will shoot all day and night, only stopping when the power is gone or there is no more storage room.
I think I made a mistake. I said that the EF mount would go on a M50 but only with an adapter. Am I right about this? I'm not sure to be honest. Also, wouldn't it be nice to see peoples photography to better relate to each others work? Just thinking...
@@jroar123 correct, EF-S to EF-M adapter, with electronic connection for AF and EXIF and a handy tripod mount. For casual blogging and hobby photography the EOS-M line-up is really good as well and sort of half size and weight vs. EF-S era. There's an 'in progress' magic lantern 70D branch that may allow auto restarting a video recording at each 30 minute mark. May or may not work, hard to tell from the scattered clues in the ML forum jungle.
Just got one from a Friend, which my wife shoots with, it’s a great backup to my 80D, when we go out the 70D acts as video and landscape body, the 80D setup for Birds….✔️
Watching your video cinched the deal for me. I have an older Canon EOS Rebel but I really wanted something better that would also wifi transfer to my Mac. Paid $350 for the body in pristine condition. I already have 2 EF-S lenses so this was perfect! Only about 3000 photos taken total in the camera history. I'm loving this camera! Thanks James!
Fellow DSLR lover here. There are fantastic bargains available now. I've always been a Nikon guy, but used DSLR prices now mean I can buy really nice Canons too.
I used to be a profesional portrait photographer. I have used a lot of Canon models. Then I had to give up that work because of health problems. The money got scarse...so I sold my 5D MK3, my 6D and my 7D. I bougth a 70D to replace the 7D. But then I just HAD to have a full frame, so I bougth 5D MK2, for 180 USD!!! And then I had to have something to just carry around. So I bougth the original EOS M, upgraded the firm ware...and it works great. I alredy had EF lenses. So I got three, old, REALLY good cameras for about 400 USD. And yes, I DO love the 70D, mostly because of the focus system. For moving objects. When it comes to the files (I do not shoot film, as in moving pictures :D ) I do prefer the 5D MK2, but it's more of a portrait/landscae camera.
I picked one up today for $5(Australian) at a local junk shop . I was actually interested in the Loepro bag that contained it. Also in the bag were a canon battery , charger , 18-135 efs lens , and a 55-250 efs lens. All in very good condition . It will be a great back up to my existing 7dmkii/5dmkiii system. SCORE !!!
I love my 70D but I’m about to re-purpose it as a cinema camera. I found an inexpensive cage and I’m investigating my options. Thanks for this. I learned things about my camera that I didn’t know

Was just cleaning out an office block at work and found one in the rubbish in new condition. Photographers at work just upgrade and throw them out. Got lucky

So many youtubers built their channels with the 80d..I loved the footage from the 80d during the years where everybody was using them for UA-cam vids..
I have always loved every Canon model that was the first of something...I stil regret selling my 7D. I used to work as a photographer, portraits mostly. And I worked with a 5D2 and a 24-105 F4 L lens...didn't like the lens, I mostly used my own Sigma 24-105 F4 Art. But, because of budget, I now have a 5D2, 6D, 70D and the first EOS-M. And not just because of the money, I feel that the first version of smething is where the producers put their money. Hell, the small original EOS-M is built like a tank!! But the body I always carry around is the 70D with the Sigma 24-105. :)
I guess it depends on what you’ll be shooting mainly. A canon 50mm f1.8 is a fantastic lens, affordable, very sharp and great for low light. The great thing about canon ef lenses is that they’re becoming really cheap. Also, look at canon lenses from Tokina and Sigma, affordable and great quality.
How does it compare with the Nikon z30 and Canon Eos R50? Looking for something to recording long videos in nature playing music and recording wildlife.
The 70D has great video afc, but has 30 minute record limit. The R50 does have unlimited recording and is overall a newer faster camera. For wildlife shooting you may want to consider the weather sealing the 70D has over the R50??

Still sometimes use my 1d mark 2. New cameras are overrated, you still need that eye for a picture.

I think the closest would be the 5D Mark iii. It has some pros over the 70d for sure.

Yeah, the AF is pretty good. Pair it with the correct lens and you can get great results
