You’re a saint man. Just got my 04 speed triple 995 and I think this is what I’m running into. Bought it knowing it doesn’t work and I’m just looking into possibilities
This was very useful because I am upgrading the starter and sprag in my 2008 Tiger 1050. I would make a couple of comments - despite what you said, you don’t need to drain the oil first. Also the manual says there is a washer under the head of the crankcase cover bolt which is just to the right of the starter motor cover but on my bike, there is no such washer. You don’t mention it either but watching your video, the face the bolt tightens on appears silver - not black like the rest which suggests that maybe there was a washer stuck to the face of the black crankcase cover????? Also, on my engine, this one bolt is about 5mm longer than all the others which are all the same length. Finally, the reason you struggled just a little taking off the crankcase cover is because the starter motor is holding it with its O-ring. I removed the starter motor first because I am replacing it and the cover came off easily just pulling by hand.
man, great video! I wish I saw this before I took my 2006 Speed Triple to the dealership. $475 later it was exactly what you described. It will tick tick clunk, not starting. I looked for days on the net to no success, so I took it to the professionals. Watching your video, I am almost certain I could've done it myself. Anyways, glad to have my Triple back. It is an awesome bike!
Thomas, thanks for taking the effort to shoot this video. I think I will need to do the upgrade soon: my 2005 S3 with 26k km on it has been showing cold start problems and I also hear the typical noise “tick tick clonk”. So this video will sure make the job easier. Greets from Antwerp, Belgium.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video, my '06 Sprint 1050ST is needing this done. Must say I agree with you, Triumph should have corrected this problem for its customers, or at least made it affordable, considering it is such a widespread problem. I was quoted around $1500 (R20k + in South Africa) to repair and just cannot afford that, so will look to fixing it myself. Love the bike, but will probably buy a different brand next time.
dude you rock this video helped alot the shop tried to rip me off said it would take 10 hours to do it plus 1000 dollers for labor alone not including the part they wanted 2000 or more to do it they thought i dont know bikes lol thanks for the video bro i got a 98 triunph daytona
I had a 900 Daytona of 1996. Fortunately the sprag clutch never gave me problems in 26000 miles but it blew up. The sprag clutches were hard to repair as access wasn't good and it's a known weakness. I would've expected Triumph to sort it out by the 1050 motor came out.
Thanks Tom. I appreciate that this super video was made some time ago, and will be most helpful in changing my sprag over to the new one on my 2006 955i shortly. I've read on some forums that the sprag gear should be aligned for TDC on the case. The video does not mention this. Does it need to be at TDC?
I have a Triumph 1050 bike. When it is cold, it works and when the temperature rises, it does not work until it cools down a little. What is the main reason for this? Please answer my friend
If you check out the comments the part numbers are in them. I reused the needle bearing, the part that is the "sprag clutch" is actually 2 pieces as you can see in the vid. I inspected the bearing and it was fine, but you never know until it is off. No problems since and it has a been working great since the fix.
Hey im sorry to ask for the part numbers, but i orderd the kit and its too big but i have the exact engine as you, can you give me the part numbers plz ty so much
Hi Thomas, enjoyed the fitting guide however, I have an ongoing issue with my bike. I'm currently on my fourth starter motor and second idler gear. I can't see any damage to the sprag itself so don't think I need to spend a fortune replacing it. Have you any guidance. Kind regards.
Yikes that doesn't sound fun. I do know that having a bad sprag will put undue strain on the starter. Also, if you are using a bad battery, that can strain the starter as well and I've seen them go because people "recharge" their battery and it "works" but not as clean as it should. Without going into crazy detail, it "lazyily" turns the starter with a weak battery, which in turn messes up any gears connected via reduction to it. Like I said in this video...my bad sprag passed the turn/counterturn test and appeared to be fine...but definitely was not.
Space Cowboy I'm not 100% sure when they decided to switch over, but I do recall hearing your year might have been their switch year (yours being good).
Dude, your video is saving my sanity..thank you so much , new to the fuel injection Triumph, (side note I have a 78kz and live it as well) mine just went out, and you make me feel like I can get it done. O5 St 1050, got part any numbers??
I just changed mine with the revised version and it just started making that same noise it made before maybe like 500 miles after the brand new one clutch and gear smh never getting a triumph again
Damn… i was about to buy the kit which seems to be $550! Now you got me scared. Did you change the battery? Did you kept trying to start it over and over forcing the new sprag or it just failed out of the blue? Thanks!
@@TheClosetBuilder , from what I can tell this problem is always exacerbated by bad battery habits and keeping a battery in that shouldn't be. Most of the people I've talked to, that have had this issue had admitted to keeping a bad battery in, never changing it, or using a cheapo battery to save some cash (which just caused more issues). Not saying its the only issue, obviously something here is not 100% on the "reliable engineering" side of the design, but then again they did redesign it in later models, which hopefully helped.
Thomas, thanks for a great video! Can you please navigate me to some video of a speedy with broken down sprag clutch? I am not sure what exactly the "tick tick clunk" sound reffers to. I have also issues starting my 05 speed (video is in my channel) but mine doesnt seem like something I would describe with a "tick tick clucnk" - SOEMTIMES it starts as if there was no "choke" (i know it should be electric/automatic tho) and sometimes it doesnt start at all. And sometimes it starts normally. But my starter motor always cranks like a beast, and it can crank for as long as I have the courage to keep the starter button pressed (which hurts me SO BAD) so I think my problem is not the sprag clutch - any idea from somebody who will look on the video in my channel is highly appreciated! thank you!
Hate to say it but if you had the tick tick clunk, you would know. I had thought that the S3 kills the starter motor if it doesn't start up after a few seconds. Def don't run it continually. I'll look for your vid to comment.
Could be that the heat causes thermal expansion and exacerbates an issue like this.... But I don't think it would cut out while running because of a sprag.
Hi, thank you for the video, can anyone also point me to the new upgraded kit you have in the video. I don’t want to purchase the same exact old kit and than have to return it. I live in New York.. thank you!
Hi mate, have the same problem on my 955i ST. Can you tell me if the sprag clutch of the newer 1050 ST is better? Will it suit mine 2003? Or is it the same big as the 955i
I'm not sure if the 955 and 1050 sprags are interchangeable. The thing I would do is see if the part#s are the same ....below in the comments somewhere are the part numbers I used for my 1050. You just have to hunt down a parts diagram for your year and see if they match up. I really have only experience on the 1050 motors and can't speak much on the older bikes. Good Luck
What if i accidently turned the crank a bit while trying to unscrew the sprag clutch? bcz the engine with the chain also moved a bit. didnt i messed any engine marks?
The only thing worse than a black plastic dipstick is the shiny CNC machined one - now that requires perfect conditions just to be able to see the level! 🤣🤣
No that isn't what mine sounded like. I'd make sure you have compression in all cylinders before going forward. Could be sprag, but sounds like it's not turning over at the starter. Test solenoid and starter itself.
Can I just help EVERYONE with the old sprag upgrade you battery to a 12ah...you will need to cut here and there However the stronger output puts barely any strain on the sprag
I don't have a link but further down in the comments are the part numbers I ordered, I'm not sure where from but I'm sure I shopped around looking for the best prices at the time.... Not exactly a cheap fix
@@brandonmedeiros3882 I'm not as familiar with the 955, but does the starter gear turn? Not sure the 955 has the same cover configuration.
I can't thank you enough. Had my sprint about a year and this went bad. Absolutely love this bike and it broke my heart. You made it look easy.

There's no indicator on the sprag itself for any alignment... And I certainly didn't worry about TDC on my fix.
Thanks so much for replying. I'll finish the job with confidence.
If one doesn't have the clutch removal tool, put it in gear, apply rear brake as you turn the retaining bolt.
Good tip!

Hello, does this replacement with a stronger sprag clutch like you did is effective? Does this work on a long term? Thank you for your answer
It fixed my issue. Time will tell, but I think the here fact that they redesigned it tells that it was a needed change.
@@mendeztom Yes I think too. And how much miles did you do since you change it?

I don't think bump starting would hurt anything that isn't already hurt. It might not do anything also. Miss good ol' kick starts on bikes
No issue bumpstarting, though it's tougher than with a dirtbike.
