This was my 11-year-old self's favorite song, so to hear it combined with my 15-year-old self's (um and also my current 33-year-old self's) favorite music genre is truly so sublime.
I love the arrangement of these "Pop goes Punk" stuff, but also really love the "producer" notes explaining how you can change the song in order to induce certain emotions or feelings.
HUGE Relient K vibes; I especially feel like the guitar part matches Hoopes' style to a tee. RK has remained my favorite band since childhood (and I'm hoping some recent rumors of new material from them actually materialize), so the level of nostalgia this gave me can't be overstated 🥹
I was profoundly ashamed of not having heard of you less than a minute into this masterpiece, thinking, wow, the immeasurable joy I missed out on just by not having this treasure locked and loaded in a playlist on a bad day. Then you started chatting with your wife about it, and I went from “this guy’s pretty good I should check out the rest of his stuff” to “I’m sold where’s my Spotify so I can follow this guy and litter every playlist I have with more of this pure genius.” Don’t quite know why but I dig the cut of your jib, and your wife sounds like a wonderful partner in life. Keep up the good work.
Having notifications on for this dude is like getting an alert that your favorite band just came out with a new single. I was half expecting VH1 pop up video effects after that intro tutorial lol
You’ve nailed down the science of creating covers. Everything about this song is how a cover should be. Adding new elements to it but yet keeping the same features that made the song good in the first place.
The quick rhythmical breakdown at 2:54 induces a musicians stank face, as well as the the voice break at 4:31 on the word “chance”. I could go on about every little detail that you just absolutely nailed man. Woof 👏🏼
This is one of my favorites you've done. And you have gotten SO much better on drums since I started following you. Great stuff, dude! EDIT: I didn't know you were a Southern Boy. From a Louisiana native, SALUTE!!! EDIT #2: You and your wife are adorable.
I used to cover this in it's original key and it would wipe me out each night... So you modulate it a full step! 😂 I never wanna hear you complain about the paramore vocals again Al!
God damn you Alex, you got me smiling from the first lyric-- You really, _really_ get this style, and it is perfection. Every song you play somehow instantly evokes the memory of hearing those CDs all those years ago, and that is pure fucking talent. YOU DESERVE TO BLOW UP; maybe Gen-Z will find you when 2004core comes back around as retro (imminently!).
LOVE the behind the scenes on how Alex puts his spin on the song, been wanting something like this for a while. Would maybe be good to have it as a separate video? Tough to add them to UA-cam playlists when I just want a bunch of songs to play without the commentaries.
Mad respect to Madison for refusing to be filmed. We stan an anti-surveillance queen! jk lol but seriously when will she sing on a track again? She's so good!
True. I know you're joking but there's some weird couples here on the internet. There's this bodybuilder dude that just films weird angles of his wife in tight spandex and a lot more of these weirdos that just weaponized the male-gaze to get views. Even using their spouses. Anyways, great banter between Mr and Mrs Melton towards the end there. Loved to hear it.
@@Artcore103 probably to get more views because they know the core demographics are from these young testosterone-filled adults and teenagers. It's honestly weird how comfortable people are getting with showing their significant other in skimpy clothing for strangers on the internet.
HOLY ISH my heart is pumping... Mainly because I was singing along with the same rock vibe that my neighbors are probably mad about right now, but I don't care, that was BANGIN!!!
Anyone who has ever loved this song needs to hear this cover! WE got to the chorus and I was leaning back for the halftime and it didn't come. But then.... it totally dropped in hard right after with the guitar lead and it was so sick! Well done good sir, well done.
- My husband and I just discovered you a few weeks ago. New subscribers here:) - Also, your wife's favorite part of this song is also my favorite part! 😁🤙🏽
As someone from the original lead singer's hometown (whose mom was also a heavy smoker and passed away) I wholeheartedly support this cover! Superb work as always man 🤘
I really enjoyed the extra information given at the beginning and the chatting with your wife at the end, I hope those elements can continue into the future if they're not too much extra work.
I love EVERYTHING about this. If I could pick out a few things in particular. I'm only kind of a drummer, but most of these things have a lot to do with drums. Lol! 1- Your use of odd rhythmic phrasing is a great homage to the heart of the original. 2- Your use of dividing and multiplying time just feels sooooo good isn't particularly jarring to me. super dope! 3- Your use of snare flams, is sublime. The placement feels so effective and your drum parts over all are just great! 4- The minor 4 you snuck in there melted my heart. Honorable mentions would include your guitar lines, the netflix trailer piano note drop, your vocal performances and the mix. If I could be negative for a minute, I know you were playing the form of the original tune, but on first listen, it did feel maybe like you coulda possibly cut it down a bit for the sake of it being "pop punk". Lol!! But yea, everything about this feels so right. I'll be listening to it again and again and again. Thank you for your art, man!!
Great job on this one Alex. I never liked the original, but as usual you turned it into a pop punk masterpiece. You should be a headliner on any new ‘Punk Goes … ‘ album.
I like it! It's super well done! I can't help but feel though, and this is the first time I have this with an Alex song, that a little simpler would've been better. For my taste there's too many rhythmic breaks and variations and such. But again, super super well done. I can't believe how good you've gotten at everything
I really thought "to ze milky way" was intentional! Might just end up listening to this instead of the original when I feel like listening to this again. 😄 I also really enjoyed the post-wife discussion, do it again!
Damn bro this is one of your best ones yet. Super enjoyable, even if you're not a pop punk fan, you've got to appreciate how good this sounds. If you'd never heard the original this would pass as being the original from a mainstream artist.
What a fantastic cover, so creative. Always inspring to hear how something familiar can be made into something completely new (and awesome). Great job.
Alex I loved the beginning section explaining what you're doing. A really good idea. And the way it then goes straight into the track was immense. I went to add it to Spotify but it wasn't there yet. But then I just listened to lots of other tracks instead.
I'd love to see a video that goes even deeper into your process - like, a long video that shows us how you get from the song choice, to taking it to the piano, to guitar or however you build it. I can wrap my head around how you'd figure it out as a band trying stuff out, but as a solitary musician, It blows my mind.
thought it was a nice touch that when starting into each of the instrumentals as you went back and forth to different rooms, at the earlier parts it actually sounded like you were hearing the instruments being played as if they were literally in another room of the house and then it blended together the audio properly 10ish seconds in.
Just restrang my acoustic and was bopping around and learning some songs and stumbled across your page...instantly subscribed and liked the song. Love how you dissected the song in the beginning and showed your creative process. You absolutely rip, brother!
The best part about this is that you can tell this dude absolutely loves what he does.
Exactly. Quickly becoming my favorite artist on UA-cam.
I envy this guy so much
...and his wife. This dude's got it figured out.
This is like a manifestation of what was in our 5-disk CD changer in the Summer of 2001.
You know the type....the one in the extended cab door !
Was about to like... But than saw it had 182 likes
bruh you aint lying... some 2000s warped tour vibes
nostalgia hits
5-Disc CD changer. YES
I knew the na na na section was gonna fuckin slap and i was not disappointed
This sounds like it's right out of an early 2000s vans warped tour and drive-thru records single
Dtr!!!
The magic of these covers is that we can all sing along to a brand new song, and feel like we’ve accomplished something in doing it.
🔥🔥🔥
i agree dude
Well said
This went from feeling like a song about a dreamy hippie/southern girl to a song about a manic pixie dream girl. Absolutely love it.
And in reality, it is about Monahan's dead mum.
You are so welcome to the world and you have to tell us who ?😊😊😊
So this is kinda like shoegaze? At least, that's how your commentary description read to me

Can’t call it underrated, man. Nobody I’ve seen here is rating him low, just doesn’t have the exposure he deserves.

I had to check the release date because I was convinced the maths didn't work out. This song did indeed come out in 2001!
Sounds nothing like sublime
It was never a phase mom. I'm not okay I promise
Add in the 43-year old’s need for nostalgia as well and I’m right there with ya😅
Goddamn it, now I have to go listen to Sublime.
I love the arrangement of these "Pop goes Punk" stuff, but also really love the "producer" notes explaining how you can change the song in order to induce certain emotions or feelings.
YES! I love how he included a synopsis of his process for us. Really helps us see behind the curtains of creativity.
Yes! This additional info is GOLD!
Shows the talent and knowledge of the music. Helps me who loves to listen but never played an instrument .
This man understands what makes pop punk sound so damn good.

The first line of lyrics sold me on the whole fucking cover. This shit was INSANE
I never knew i needed a pop-punk version of this song until today.

I heard that a band called Train did a cover of this song. But nothing beats Alex’s his version!
I love that you let us see part of your process with this one! This cover was amazing!!!
The thing is, Drops of Jupiter is my all time favorite song, and you just did the impossible: you make me love it even more
Post song discussion with my wife is absolutely fantastic. Please make it a recurring feature. Also, as always, absolute banger. Great work
Another Alex Melton banger. I love it when you upload new pop punk anthems it always somehow works out
The quick rhythmical breakdown at 2:54 induces a musicians stank face, as well as the the voice break at 4:31 on the word “chance”. I could go on about every little detail that you just absolutely nailed man. Woof 👏🏼

I'm loving the post song chat, and the cover is just outrageous. That guitar work and the drums are just *chef kiss*
