Gerard was just the nicest guy back then. He used to call me "sweets." I was lucky enough to see him silkscreening the flowers canvases.
80 yrs. old and I'm so happy he's still here!! He seems like such a nice person. Although physically impaired his mind, his communication is so clear and youthful. Gives me inspiration as I've been on this planet many years and hope to retain vitality for the duration.
“It’s an honour to meet you.”

30 minutes only scratches the shallowest surface of this man's interesting life
Such a cool, charming, sophisticated man. As a MASSIVE Warhol fan and fan of that scene, this was like listening to half of Andy... or is listening to half of Andy.
He and Edie were the most gorgeous people in Andy's orbit.
It’s just sad that it really does damper the story in a way. Edie should have been helped and wasn’t. This coming from a huge fan of Warhol’s. I love love the art but the movies,to me are hard because it really makes Andy look bad in a way. What could he do ? But I bet something. I’m so glad that it really hasn’t stopped the Warhol momentum right now as he does truly deserve it. I just wish someone stepped in to help with Edie.
@@frankscott927 Many people tried to help Edie over the years but she pushed them all away. She was very self destructive and self absorbed. She used people as much as she was used by them.
So true they were 2 good-looking people
Gerard be my father! Oh my God! Him speaking is already poetry ❤
Gerard, thanks for sharing a fascinating life... Lots more to go!
Beautiful, touching poem Gerard.
Love this interview. Gerard is wonderful !
i remember his photo show at a gallery in houston way bak when, still have the lovely brochure. kool kat.
I hope I'm nearly a fraction of an inch as cool as an old guy as this man is. What a legendary individual and people forget how jaw-droppingly attractive he was in his heyday.
people who have lived many years have widened perspective and cool, very interesting information for those who listen. Not referring to you, but so many people of the US culture look upon those who have lived a while as humorous dunderheads or useless, not good looking human beings. Habits of viewing other people in general can be so wrong can't they?! I'm so happy you see beyond the typical stereotypical viewpoints so many people have. .
Wonderful. And he’s poetry is awesome too. 🙏😊
Very revealing and moving
I agree that a life well lived is
Curiosity
Very cool classy gentleman
what an inspiring man. i hope to be like him someday.
Absolutely wonderful and essential interview 🙏🏼❣️
They wanted Warhol Stories not Gerald’s and it’s sad.
I noticed that too, and I was disappointed as well. Gerard has had such a unique life. I truly hope he finds a publisher for his autobiography. His life story should be shared.
@@judyosullivan6376 I certainly want to read it. Warhol's life has been published in various forms several times over.
@@markandresen1 100% agreed
@@judyosullivan6376 He was open to discussing so much of his life as the interviewer directed him....all about his life with Andy Warhol. I guess it was an important time for him. I'd like to know more about him personally and his own art...not Andy Warhol.
Ugh, why does the interviewer cut Malanga off as he’s recounting Warhol’s connection to the Velvets? ”no, tell the story we already know with Barbara Rubin.”
It's interesting that Malanga made so many contributions to the Warhol oeuvre, emphasizing that Warhol's role as an artist was more as a collaborator as also can be seen with the paintings he made in collaboration with Basquiat.
I’ve always felt badly about Gerald. I’m nothing but a big fan that’s studied all this and it was Gerald that was there producing the gems along with Andy and then he was nothing in a way. I love Andy but It does get complicated at times. I guess like any life out there.
A pudgy friend of mine was thown in with the factory crowd at a party way back in the day. Because he was overweight, they were very cruel to him. He bumped into them again at a disco and Truman Capote took one look at him with utter contempt, put his nose up in the air, and walked away. This was a shallow, destructive group. No wonder so many ended up dead early.
I say, respectfully, that if one had asked the same Q’s of this incredibly prepared presenter (wMalanga simply nodding yes or no, etc).. it might’ve gone rather better.. well enjoyed nonetheless 🙏🏻
Such a sweet man!
Enthralling. Will Mr. Malanga be appearing in London this year or next year?
Andy was a user. A cold blooded, cunning operator who spat people out once he was done with them. Gerard just doesn't want to tarnish the image that he was very closely associated to which for the sake of legacy makes sense.
Perhaps that's true, however Lou Reed always disputed that description of Warhol.
legend
I know he was thrown in the DEEP END at the beginning, but a lot of art critics tried to find meaning in BAD Screen Printing. He had vast amounts of fill-in and loss in dried up highlights - but fortunately it added "character" to the imagery.
Warhol and his crowd, laughing, step by step, walked Edie to her death.
Not a one of them ever felt remorse or took responsibility for what they collectively did to her.
They were too busy being cool.
Yep. They were unforgivably nasty to a *lot* of people, and everyone overlooks it. Even decades later, acknowledging the unpleasant reality could get one ostracized for lack of hipness, and everybody lives in fear of that.
@@jonathanmitchell9886very true
i met him @ the paradox restaurant in the EV. he called me @ home, my mother answered. i was embarrased. no one lived w/their mother except andy. i was in high school, he was a bit too old for me.
Basquiat sweatshirt
"Gerard, you should get a haircut, that style doesn't suit you at all." A. Warhol during an interview «My True Story» with Gretchen Berg, Summer 1966, The East Village Other.
Saw a dream of a person who saw hell in a dream on UA-cam and a man called Andy Warhol said in hell don't be a homosexual and gay marriage is wrong , .............must be a different Andy Warhol?
No lines on his face.
Speak up!!!!
I see jealousy when Edie is mentioned, he keeps dodging her name and with his body language it shows he disliked her
Astute observation
I heard him making some interesting comments comparing Edie S. & Candy Darling. I think it might be in the documentary here on YT called "Beautiful Darling".
@@heaven7360Hey I’m very interested in watching that doc. Could you please help me with more information to that video you’re mentioning? Thanks ❤
Projecting. He seemed very upfront recounting memories from 50-ish years before.
I see a painful memory.
Is he gay ?????
