incredible how little much of the scenery has changed! Thanks for doing this - I watched Duel on TV as a child, and it remains one of my favorite films.
This was FANTASTIC! I just watched Duel again yesterday!! It's one of my all time favourites. Thanks for all your research and work that went into this vlog! Hugs from 🇨🇦
Manfred that was absolutely outstanding. Did you notice that the truck door was ajar just before crashing in all likelihood providing an escape route for the stunt driver. Highly enjoyable. Thanks to you and your wife.
YEA the truck driver actor tried to slam the door shut just as he jumped out but it didnt close and they only had the one shot and attempt to film it as it was the last truck they had so they had to keep that shot in the movie. Speilberg filmed blood in the cab tho to show the driver was dead
I was ten, turning eleven. From my first viewing, when it aired on ABC, it has been my favourite movie, ever. I was lucky enough to tell Dennis Weaver that, on the set of "Lonesome Dove: The Series"(for which my sister was script supervisor). Mr. Weaver, actually, hugged me and, remarked, "yeah, it was fun, making that. The kid who directed knew his stuff, too!" When I saw the imminent DVD release, I, immediately, ordered it. That's my "Duel" story.
I saw this as a teen when it original aired. I was kinda a film buff. It really impressed me. Mostly how much could be down with so little. I took note of the directer. I've followed and been impressed by his work ever since.
I have a small model of the Plymouth Valiant car used in the movie and Duel book signed by the author. Great movie! The dinosaur roar at the end when the truck goes over the cliff was used in Jaws movie. It was when the shark was blown up and sinking..they you hear the roar. Spielberg did as a tribute to "Duel " He said, "Without Duel, there would have been no "Jaws"
Nice to see that there are other people out there that appreciate that movie , I saw it as a kid and never forgot it I was happy when it finally became available on DVD Thank you .
I remember watching "Duel" when it first premiered on television back in the early 70's. It is still always in the back of my mind when I'm passing a semi-truck on the highway.
If your wife let you plan a trip to California focused on finding filming sites from a 50-year old movie.......you are one lucky man. Do whatever you have to do to keep her.
That is one of the best movies ever made. I still watch it from time to time. Great presentation, I always wanted to revisit some of those locations and see what they’re like now. Thank you
My first car was a 1971 Plymouth Valiant with a 318 V8. Same exact car as in Duel but metallic blue. I drove it for seven years. If Dennis Weaver's character had been a little more proactive with his maintenance, and had that water hose fixed in advance, he would have lost that truck for good. (But then the movie would have been way shorter. Ha ha.)
This was a great movie, still have a DVD copy, and also have The Car, and Planet of the Apes, and they are great classics. Great job locating where it was filmed.
Incredible research sir to find those locations well done This is a brilliant movie. I remember watching this movie for the first time back in 1999 with my girl friend. She hated the movie. That girl friend is now my wife and I can gladly say that 2 of our 4 kids love this movie.
Manfred, Of course fan of movie, nicely done, having lived in So. Cal. all my life have Rode every portion of this on my motorcycle. One of my friends from 1970's his Moms sister married Dennis Weaver so in the summer would go to his house in Calabasas to swim in his pool.
I saw this when it first aired on American TV & I made a point to remember the director's name because it was so amazing! My dad was a long-haul trucker & loved it, too. (His favorite line: "I'll get him on the grade, I'll get him on the grade!") A couple of years later, I read my grandma's Readers Digest Condensed Books copy of Jaws & was mesmerized by even a shortened version. Imagine my thrill when I heard that the Duel director was filming the shark epic! Man, the '70s were a great time for movies.
I live and work in this area where this was filmed. It is entirely shot in the Areas of Acton, Agua Dulce, and some areas of Leona Valley Ca. Amazing to me that Steven Spielbergs career really started in my own back yard. I love this movie even more now. Thank you.
I watched this movie yesterday and it's amazing to see how some of the original locations seem to be frozen in time .. it's a lot of effort in traveling, filming and editing this stuff ... appreciate your efforts
If you like the film, you will love this, what a change in some places and almost the same in others, really brings home the area where the Duel took place, so very well done Manfred.
I was ten years old when my family and I sat down to watch this movie together. Saturday Night Movie of the Week on ABC.. Fire in the fireplace, popcorn etc. 90 minutes of intense, edge of your seat action. Funny how movies can leave such a lasting impact. To this day Duel is one of my all time favorite movies. Literally sewn into the fabric of my childhood. Funny thing. David Mann lived in Toluca Lake, Ca. Considering his destination he must of had a of time on his hands. Maybe he was trying to escape his wife extra early. He did not need to drive through downtown Los Angeles. All he had to do was get on the 170 North to the I-5 North. From there take the 14 Freeway North to the locations where he met the Road Rage trucker. Chuck's Cafe lives on as a French Restaurant. Wish the gas stations he stopped at was still in Acton. That would be cool to see. Glad the area has not changed a whole lot since 1971. Quite Shocking for California and the amount of growth since then. Loved your video.
Great work friend. Loved this film since I was a small boy. I’m 55 very soon and still watch it fairly often. You can certainly tell Spielberg was heavily influenced by Hitchcock and the music is definitely a nod to psycho. Brilliant!!
Always wanted to re-trace the highways and find the RR crossing, and of course the finale at the canyon in the movie. You did it for us! Thanks Manfred!
I respect very much, what you have done here, and all the research involved. My favorite movie of all time is The Wraith, and I used to go to Tucson in the early 90s and cruise around looking for familiar places (pre-Internet) in the film. The icing on the cake for me, however, was when as an actor, I got to do a scene a few years back with David Sherrill, who played Skank in the movie. It would be like you doing a scene with the Rattlesnake Lady or something. Very cool, and thanks so much for sharing what must have been a lifelong project (and dream) for you.
The Wraith, one of the 80s classic and incredibly underrated. Awesome, nostalgic flick. Some of the best car scenes and stunts ever put on tape. Superb soundtrack, and a magical cast!
Awesome! I am a bit younger than you but still remember the first time I ever saw “Duel” on television. I was probably nine or ten. It was so exciting and scary to me. I used to look for it all the time on the “TV guide” which was popular in the 70’s. On a couple occasions when I read it was going to air on the “late show”, I would sneak out of my bedroom and watch it while my folks were asleep. It wasn’t until many years later that I realized the same great director made both this film and Jaws! Thanks for the video. Brings back great memories.
I love then and nows. so nostalgic. this is brilliant. amazing some places haven't changed that much in 50 years. one of my fave films. thanks so much for posting. great job. stay safe.
Watched this film as a kid in the late 70's! Not only did it become one of my favourite films, but it was also the same night I had my first 'Pot Noodle' ! You dont forget things like that!
Sad how advanced and modern things have become. Times back then were just a little more laid back, simple and slower than they are in these modern-day times.
Thank you for the hard work ,you done.... First time I saw this movie was in1985, and I was about 7 years. seriously look how the world is got so fast, it's been almost 50 years but some place's of the location looks the same
Most people forget that this was a story published in Playboy of what actually happened to the author. Great movie and great acting and editing and shows what can be done with a great script and director. I was in the Army when I saw it. We all loved it.
Thanks Brother!! THAT was a Trip! Saw Duel Upon It's Release as a Kid. That Movie Sticks to Your Ribs!!!! Iconic. Amazing what a Great Imagination Can Do With Simplicity.
When that Peterbuilt starts to push the Valiant toward the passing train, I STILL get that little adrenalin rush, even now at age 62!😀 Love this scary movie!
The beauty of this video is that that place remains unchanged as it did for many years before you could get that same truck and film this move today with different actors yet the scenery would be identical thank you for sharing
Thank you sir for showing these exact locations. I was sure it was filmed mostly in Acton California but could never confirm it which you just did. Thank you so much because I was puzzled for years trying to figure it all out and when I looked up online it always said it was filmed in Bakersfield and since I drive those same roads everyday for work I was so sure it was Acton but Google kept telling me Bakersfield. LOL Now I can sleep at night better. LOL Rest in peace Dennis Weaver You was such an amazing actor and in this movie.
Steven Spielberg, when speaking about the locations used for 'Duel', usually describes the area as 'Palmdale' because that is the largest urban centre in the vicinity. The opening scenes of the theatrical version, which are overlaid by the titles, were filmed on the highway leading out of LA towards Bakersfield, as the road signs show. The Director has contributed a number of 'Extras' to the DVD version of the movie and describes many of the locations in detail. Fifty years on, it is remarkable how little has changed in most of the sites he chose,
Thanks for putting this together, hope you had a great time, only saw this for the first time last year, and it gives me the creeps to imagine what could happen in the California desert!! Lol thanks again from the 🇬🇧👍 and this is one of my favourite movies now💯
Warm regards to you Manfred for all your hard work in tracing some of the areas of the highway where Duel was filmed at......I too have always loved this movie and is one of my top favorite films even of todays movies and I was like 15 years old when this movie came out.......Cheers my friend and may God Bless you and your family!
Desert lands usually are, too damn hot in daylight, and nearly freezing or freezing at night. I've been out in the California desert back in the early 80's, while in the army. Very spooky place sometimes. There were quite a few old 50's science fiction movies filmed in that same area, and also WASP filmed their video " Wildchild" there in 1984.
That was fun and brought back memories... of driving Trucks and School Bus through many of the areas in your film. I had the last student on the route. She was in the little RV park just before the road curved and went up through the tunnel. I ate a couple times in the white rock cafe in the mid 80's. I live in San Fernando just 10 miles south. I grew up going to many filming areas in Boy Scouts for Camporee (arranged by movie industry folks that lived in the several local Councils) and just poking around with friends on CB Radio scavenger hunts and general teenager pointless fun. A couple miles east of the tunnel, past the Agua Dulce Road (eastbound) starts into old weekend resorts with swimming pools and summer camp type cabins. One property has monstrous Eucalyptus and willow trees. It was known as Little Africa, still owned by the movie industry. It was famous for 2 TV shows, Daktari and Tarzan. In the 70's the Tree House was still high up in a tree. You can find the location on Google Earth at Sanna Ranch, 9927 1/2 Soledad Canyon Rd, Santa Clarita, CA 91390. I never knew how much was filmed in So Cal until I moved to Utah and Colorado. Then I saw Los Angeles in every movie LOL, Even Dukes of Hazard was filmed in the area just south of Duel along the 14v freeway.
Great work, I live 10 miles away from these locations and never knew exactly where they were until today. I was surprised the roads look the same, not much has changed.
Great video Manfred! I remember watching this movie on TV as a kid. I rediscovered it as an adult and realized what a masterpiece it is. I'm not too far away from that area now...I'll have to do a road trip and find the locations in your video. Thanks!
David Morrow- If you do, see if that truck and Plymouth is still at the bottom of that cliff. I highly doubt anyone would have been able to recover them.
@@truthseeker2321 Yes that's a good point...I would imagine they would have cleaned up what they could, but who knows? I'll try to check it out and see if anything is still down there.
Great work,..and great memories of a wonderfully crafted psychological thriller,..that terrified me as a kid, and remains to this day one of my favorite films,..I love the simplicity of the story, and the cat and mouse scenario builds up real menace and threat throughout.....to dramatic and spectacular climax,...Duel remains a classic to this day.
Excellent work Manfred, this is my most favorite film, thank you for the video. That scene in the tunnel when he flicked his lights on has to be the most creepy part. How cool?! How cool to visit the scenes from 50 years ago !!
A great film ,..and Steven Spielberg' s first major feature , just weeks earlier he 'd directed an episode of the classic detective series Colombo....it was obvious even back then , ...he had star quality as a film director.....and was destined for great things,...and what a career he's forged out.....legend
Bravo! This is one of the best, most well-researched presentations on youtube. You hit all the points...informative, interesting, well-narrated, good video, good volume level, music appropriate, well-researched, relevant content. It appears you did a lot of work on this. Awesome Work!!
Thank you Andrew! Yes, I invested a lot of time in the research of the locations, and to cut the video. But if I can make other people happy with it, it was the right decision :-) You can also watch my "Drive an Walk along" Video: ua-cam.com/video/RzGCEQkRqX8/v-deo.html
Wow man. Great job indeed. For me too Duel is one of my favourite movie even though I was not even born then. But u should have taken some shots inside the 'Chuck Cafe' too and order something there. That would have been more interesting. Nwy, but I love the fact that the natural views like the mountains, hills, desert areas are still the same. Well that the beauty of nature...ever beautiful. Hail to you man and hail to S.Spielberg & team for producing such a masterpiece.👌
Hi Manfred, I too am a fan of this movie. You did a great job of putting all this together. I live in this area and drive these roads on a regular bases. I work in the film industry and love it's history. Thanks again.
Hi Manfred.. I might actualy have watched the Exact same german tv showing of Duel as you did XD.. I Love absolutely Everything about this movie classic.. I can fully imagine the gänsehautfeeling and i´m very happy for you that you got to go to these ´sacred` places :) Great editing of the video (i missed seeing the inside of Chuck´s Diner tho) and Vielen Dank for sharing this great experience :)
Hi, thanks for this. I will repeat it in the next few years :-) Here you can see the History of "Chucks Diner" > Le Chene French Cuisine: lechene.com/history-of-le-chene/
It's crazy seeing how much some of these places have changed since the 70s, and how are others are almost exactly the same.
Mostly the latter!
Amazing shooting locations...
*_True_* 👍🏻
Duel music gives me chills....watching from India 🇮🇳
Like Herrmanns Psycho
I love this film, I found it at the $5 bin at Walmart. I was blessed.
incredible how little much of the scenery has changed! Thanks for doing this - I watched Duel on TV as a child, and it remains one of my favorite films.
thank you too, it was a very special feeling to see all this places live :-)
This was FANTASTIC! I just watched Duel again yesterday!! It's one of my all time favourites. Thanks for all your research and work that went into this vlog! Hugs from 🇨🇦
thanks for this, these are impressive locations of a timeless history/movie :-)
Manfred that was absolutely outstanding. Did you notice that the truck door was ajar just before crashing in all likelihood providing an escape route for the stunt driver. Highly enjoyable. Thanks to you and your wife.

Great job. That movie is one of the grestest ever made and will never die
Remember watching that show as a kid....scared the shit out of me! Every truck that would pass I would think they are out to get me!!!
"Duel" came out when I was in high school. It has always been one my favorite movies. This is an amazing video! Thank you for your time and effort. 👍

The desert hasn't changed much, but the towns have grown exponentially.

DUEL 1971 film, one of the best films I've ever seen, was amazing and inspired by the director's work. Greetings from Indonesia
If your wife let you plan a trip to California focused on finding filming sites from a 50-year old movie.......you are one lucky man. Do whatever you have to do to keep her.
Yes I do! But it was only 1 day of 21 travel days :D
That is one of the best movies ever made. I still watch it from time to time. Great presentation, I always wanted to revisit some of those locations and see what they’re like now.

This movie was before my time but I remember being a kid and watching it on tv with my dad in the late 90s early 2000s. A classic!
I was in the Corps, but will always remember that movie. Thanks for taking me back!
Semper fi
Very well-done. Thank you for doing this and thank you for sharing it. Always wondered what the route looked so many years later.
With pleasure, thanks for your comment
This was a great movie, still have a DVD copy, and also have The Car, and Planet of the Apes, and they are great classics. Great job locating where it was filmed.
Excellent job👏

Best TV movie and still one of the best movies ever! Sheer genius!
I grew up watching Duel with my Dad back in the 70s. It made me terrified of gasoline tanker trucks, but still one of my favorite movies. thank you.
The scene at Chucks cafe always made me laugh....I love this film thanks for your efforts to do this for us all
That movie had me spellbound all those years ago when I saw it on tv. That truck was terrifying
I have always loved this movie. I have it on dvd and still watch from time to time, late night !

Thank you for making this dude, would love to do similar on a future trip to the states one day

Duel and Christine are my favourite films about cars. Followed closely by the hearse
Well done on all levels. Each location accounted for....Steve Henderson and I are very proud 😝
Did David Mann ever challenge you to a fist fight or something?😂😂😂
This was great! These locations have hardly changed at all.
Great job, Manfred.
Thanks a lot! It was a pleasure for me!
I love then and nows. so nostalgic. this is brilliant. amazing some places haven't changed that much in 50 years. one of my fave films. thanks so much for posting. great job. stay safe.

Fabulous video, One of my all time favourite films along side "The Car". Thankyou for all the effort. Brilliant 👍👍
Nice. I saw this with my parents on ABC television. I was about 10. Blew my mind.
Same here - I was 12 . The movie is still relevant today in 2021. Lots of road rage.
Yes same here watched it in a den remember those lol at my nabiors house I was. About 14
Television was the first place I saw it too. Late night movie on ABC channel 7 New York.

It's bigger than Germany with about half the population. And I think the difference between cities and rural areas is bigger than in Germany.
Then I saw Los Angeles in every movie LOL, Even Dukes of Hazard was filmed in the area just south of Duel along the 14v freeway.
wow, that must have been great, I envy you
Very cool compilation. I'd like to drive these locations and relive the movie in person and this video is great inspiration for such.
Thank you, that makes me very happy :-)
Great Job...adding the original scene music was a plus! Love this movie,,,Intense!

This movie made an impression on me too. Thank you Manfred !
How cool is that!! Thanks. I saw that movie as a young kid and rediscovered it in my adulthood. A definate favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing.
with pleasure, and thank you for the nice comment :-)
Seen the film at least 10 times. It never gets old and STILL creeps me out 🤣
Yes I watched it 10 times too, when I was younger than the truck, I was so scared it would look like a monster
I only saw it once, 22 years ago, but I remember it vividly. Thanks for this, was neat to see the places now
Great work, I live 10 miles away from these locations and never knew exactly where they were until today. I was surprised the roads look the same, not much has changed.
thanks for your comment, it's a beautiful area you live in :-)
You have done a great job.
Thanks for sharing and for your effort.
Great video Manfred! I remember watching this movie on TV as a kid. I rediscovered it as an adult and realized what a masterpiece it is. I'm not too far away from that area now...I'll have to do a road trip and find the locations in your video. Thanks!
this is great, have fun!
Excellent job. Live that movie when i first watch it in the 90's as a kid.
HI, THE BEST DIRECTOR STEVEN SPIELBERG AND THE BEST MOVIE..GOD BLESS ALL THE ONES WHO ARE WATCHING THIS FENOMENAL SUMMARY..
Wow I live near these locations and drive these roads often. definitely will be watching for the truck.
It is very near to LA, wow! Thank you very much from Spain. Excellent!!!
Well Done Bro!,Seen this Movie when it came out on TV when I was 9!,Will always be one of my Favorites! Jeff Near Houston,Texas USA
An diesem Meisterwerk sieht man, dass Qualität nicht immer eine Frage des Geldes ist.
But if I can make other people happy with it, it was the right decision :-)

Agreed💯
Unfortunately, the cafe is not the same like during the 70th. neither the interior nor the food :-/
cool manfred,,,duel was and still is a fantastic film by any standards...infact im gonna watch again now
The menace and execution of this simple story is totally riveting, and a mark of great filmmaking
Hi Manfred, I too am a fan of this movie. You did a great job of putting all this together. I live in this area and drive these roads on a regular bases. I work in the film industry and love it's history. Thanks again.
