I would caulk the cracks with either clear or white caulk so there is no cut pieces showing and caulk can be painted and is rubber when dries holds better that paint so will also help keep the fender on

Sometimes it sounds good on paper but when you are banging doors on the track, stuff that fine in detail will only matter to some. This is good enough for me.
