- On November 8, 2006 Christie's auctioned off four paintings by Gustav Klimt which had been recovered by the Bloch-Bauer family from Austria. The auction was until 2013, the highest grossing auction of all time. See www.nytimes.com...
Love this auctioneer, he is like an orchestra conductor, very proper but you can feel his excitement.
Yes! i love him!
This is a historic scene. I'm thrilled to actually see it, at last. This event - and Mr. Schoenberg's role it - is THE defining moment in the history of art restitution.
+jutubaeh No offense intended but, um, your comments mean . . . what?
+TheStockwell Holy Cow... jutubaeh is smoking something I don't want to even have a second hand breath of. I've spent the past three days watching the deposition, history and evolution of this case. Randol Schoenberg has nothing but my greatest admiration for being the avenue of some restitution for the family.
+Michael Malone I couldn't agree more. Mr. Schoenberg has moved on to other issues. The Klimt case is now a matter of history but, whatever else Schoenberg does in the year ahead, this case was his "Atticus Finch" moment, the one he can feel proud he'll be remembered for.
@jutubaeh dumb comments
Klimt was a genius with brush and paint. He is one of my all-time favorites.
Garbage painter, Garbage human being
Watching this after reading about the recovery of these paintings, this is actually an emotional moment for me. I can't imagine how the owners and Randy Schoenberg felt.
brave to you Randy, for having cornered those criminal and brought a small piece of justice to the victims--including your own family. brave and god bless you
Worth every penny. Could you imagine finding these masterpieces? I am having the same reaction with the Rothkos. I have been in the room.
holy shit i need to start painting
lol

Have you started?
@@jacobjorgenson9285 yup!
randy you were a super hero. congratulations all over the times
even though it happened 14 years ago it was still exciting to watch. i need to take up painting also..
just 16 years ago and everything looks so old already
Thank you so much for posting this!!
Incredible!.. it has to be said, Klimt was a genius out there.
The portrait was purchased by Oprah Winfrey and sold in 2016 for $150,000,000.
Dang😮And All I Want Is A Little Place At The Beach Too Call My Own😢
And so do I, my friend! 🤩 Only a cottage in a quaint rural environment! Cheers! Xx
The scene at 17:33 is so amusing.
You let the children scramble for the low biddings, and after the weaker ones are thrown out of the ring. With only one last contender standing with the ring clear, you swoop in with your 78 million dollars and hit them with one two punch. And game over just like that. That is how you do auctions with style.

And the winning bidder was Oprah Winfrey!
love her art
Think of the commissions for the auction house for just a few minutes work!
It's not as simple as all that.
I'm wondering when the auction featuring Beeny Babies is going to be held..
Damn!! the count in half million and million dollars
After watching a few art forgery documentaries, it takes no genius to see that being duped in this world is a given. What's real or fake? Who knows.
antifa!!!!!!?!!!!!!
Sincerely,
TEQUILA!!!!!!!!!!!
The provenance of these works is impeccable. They went from Klimt’s studio to the home of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Then they were confiscated by the Nazi’s who were very good at documenting everything. A lawyer named Furher arranged their sale to the Belvedere Museum, which then had to surrender them to Maria Altman.
Every painting but the most famous one lol
for any of you that watch this could you please tell me what they are saying at the 74 million mark? they are amused by something, but I cant figure it out. at the 17:30 mark thanks so much Thanks Randy for sharing!
A new bidder came in at $74 million. Somehow that was funny.
+Sophie Nelson It is a clandestine strategy. After Jussi backed off, it was time to make a move.
They thought it was down to just 2 last bidders. When one of them dropped out they expected it to be over but someone else was just hanging back waiting. Basically, nobody expected that move.
Just finished watching WOMAN IN GOLD, for the 6th time. Found this, since the auction took place after Maria's death, where did the proceeds go?
Just curious. Wonderful job Sir, by the way.
Wikipedia doesn't say, but the owner put it up for display in his Neue Gallerie museum of early 20th Century German and Austrian art on Fifth Avenue in NYC.
This auction took place in 2006, Maria died in 2011.
Bloody exciting isn’t it? 😂😂😂
Not one person here is in it for the sake of BEAUTY. Not one.
I love Klimt but the way people just throw money around is sickening.
is it just me or is paying millions of dollars for any painting obscene?
It’s you
You just don'y have the money!!!!!!!!
It's just you.
No it is not obscene, there are only so many important paintings and the demand between museums is so great it create the high prices. Anything that is great and rare brings high prices. It has always been that way.
(19:10) Euro 61,230,000 equals Japanese Yen 9,248,870? I don't get it. Can anybody please tell me something about that?
not enough digits on display. 9,248,870,000 Japanese Yen

You can't say "the highest of all time until..." That's dishonest hyperbole - raising an expectation you know will be unfulfilled.
Now we know it was Oprah.
172000000 dollars - unbelievable!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
In its placement in the sentence, until 2013 is parenthetical.
Oprah Winfrey made the winning bid for "Adele Bloch-Bauer II."
You have to be the dumbest person to make this DUMB comment.
Nah.. Mr. Lauder got it according to the movie
That's right.
Yes, Oprah did buy it. Then this happened, from Wiki ... "The painting was temporarily lent to Neue Galerie New York for the exhibition “Klimt and the Women of Vienna’s Golden Age, 1900-1918.” Bought by a Chinese fellow for $150 million. Bye bye to this painting - good luck in ever seeing it again in person. Wonderful end to the story, right?! Would have been better to have left it for display in Austria, as Maria claimed she wanted to happen.
@@marlindarrah9478 Moma?
??
Who are they talking of the phone with?
+Mario Ramirez exactly.
Usually buyers from another country or those who can't attend the live auction.
Anonymous buyers
Batman and Robin, the Joker and the Hulk... and Superman.
Buyers who cannot be there or who wants to be anonymous
How many homeless children could you feed with that kind of money?
The US has spent trillions on the homeless, hungry and poor and still there are homeless, hungry and poor. Money spent on these painting wouldn't do a thing because homeless, hungry and the poor will never go away. It is just a part of life.
Shred em all
37-37
People get real, it;s just paint on a piece of canvass.
Its just paper money
too rich
No such thing
never too rich, you just don't have the money!!
So annoying to focus on mere humans, please, I want to focus on the art.
Nmm
