This was an exceptional unpacking of the complexities of both the Altmann case and the wider issues. So great to listen to someone able to speak at length on a topic about which they are so knowledgeable. Great stuff, Randy!!

what an amazing story and what a passionate and dedicated lawyer. The Austrian government seemed to have done many things to prevent her from getting what they know is really her family's painting and instead of REALLY looking into this first, they pretty much were subliminally telling her no and this is very sad. I'm so glad she and her lawyer continued to fight. I always believe that passion and the will to fix what is wrong always triumphs int he end.

If anyone listening to Randy Schoenberg's excellent lecture has not yet seen The Woman in Gold, the wonderful new film starring Helen Mirren as Maria Altman and Ryan Reynolds as Randy Schoenberg, you should watch it immediately after listening to Randy's lecture. The film takes a few liberties (dramatic license as they say) but it is a beautiful account of Maria's story, and the unbelievable obstacles she faced. It also features some gorgeous scenes of 1920s/1930s Austria when Maria was a girl who sat listening to her exquisitely lovely Aunt Adele, the subject of the world-famous Klimt painting, tell her stories about life. It is a beautiful, life-affirming film with a very moving ending.

This was more detailed than the Helen Mirren movie, and though it moved slowly,so did the wheels of the law.
Mr. Schoenberg is a wonderful speaker!

I wonder why the movie Woman in Gold didn’t end with the public museum showing at the LA county museum ? That would have been a much better ending.
As always the truth of the matter is always better than hollywoods portrayal.

I saw the Woman in Gold painting in the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna in 1990. What an astonishing work of art. It remains fresh in my memory years later. At the time I had no idea I was looking at a stolen work of art or the tragedy behind it. I'm so glad the family finnally got it back though shame on Austria for not returning every looted item.

The Belvedere has plenty of looted art still sitting there today. I wonder when the rest of the art finds its original proper place.

E.Randol Schoenberg: War is the only answer.
    Audience hysterically: Ahahahaha!!!
Nice ending. No lessons have been learned since WWII.

I brought this f-ing story to the L.A.Times as mentioned by Robert Scheer. Not a single damn soul has acknowledged my need to to the "the right thing" in this tale and yes, as a piss broke artist living kindly in the basement of another fellow artists cellar I strongly sense there's something terribly askew in not even getting a f-ing mention in this context. Yes. bitterness is a bitch....

Stories such as these are heart-wrenching, but are now getting lost by the atrocities that Israel is committing in the same name that nazis did, religion. (my comment is being deleted, just shows the depth of propaganda that people are trying to propagate.
