I use Horizon for indoor tiny whoop flights way more than Acro. Faster than angle and makes it easy to recover when getting out of sorts in confined spaces.
my moblite7 is where i started using it. Horizon made it fun inside. Funny story, on my 3.5" skylite I was out flying and never ever had used angle mode, I used a sim then went all in. But it was set up on my controller. I accidently hit the toggle and thought my quad was broken, almost lost it in a yard then carefully landed it not knowing what was happening. Went home then realized hours later what happened haha. thought I had a loose prop.

I got a lot of issues with GPS rescue. One day he tried to dive on other people's houses or another day he just said "I am a Stuka, let's dive on the ground or the trees of the people who let me fly in their big land"
Joshua, don't you know if there any plans on distance sensors support in betaflight? And do they now use barometer for angle or in gps rescure? And the same for magnetometer - if it is used in gps?
What would be cool to see is BF (iNav too!) making a Diff All automatically when flashing and then applying it after the flash. Ideally it would also know which settings are ok to transfer from the current version to the new version being updated to and either giving a warning when something can't be or just skipping it.
The new horizon mode reminds me of how Acro was implemented for quads in the PhoenixRC sim. It was quite unpleasant to fly because it just creates more unpredictability.
Ah finally they fixed the issue with the M10 GPS. Mine didn't work at all in 4.4, so I went back to 4.3. guess 4.5 might be worth an upgrade to get better GPS rescue and auto-land.
Some improvements since this video was released - Bind button is now in Configurator for ELRS, and when flashing firmware and you select CRSF, it disables the Telemetry field and says it's automatically included.
Hum, M10 seemed to work ok for me. Interested to see what I was missing! It definitely wandered a bunch trying to figure out which way was home though. Which, made sense with no compass.
It didn't wander because it had no compass. It wandered because the M10 receiver was only running at 1 Hz. One of the effects of the "bug" was that the FC could not change the update rate to 10 Hz as required.
So, in the beginning you mentioned we shouldn't upgrade because its gonna wipe the factory configuration. But what if you do want to upgrade? How do you keep the configuration or how do you configure the new firmware?
Inav is more for automated/assisted flights modes and longer range fpv, though the default tune for larger quads was notably more stable. Bf4.5 has included more support for magnetometers too, which has been more of an Inav feature.
It’s not really a new feature. But I heard from Zoe that there will be a 3D preset in the new BF release. Idk how well it will work. But some may find it useful
with horizon mode, why not make it blend more smoothly on stick position, rather than orientation EG: 0% stick deflection, full Angle mode correction 50% stick deflection, the Angle mode correction is halved, but will still recover if the Acro rate is lower than the Angle correction then theres a critical point, where your Acro rate is equal to the Angle correction, keeping the angle beyond the critical point of stick deflection, the rate of rotation then becomes dominant, but it rotates slowly then at higher deflections, it matches the Acro rate more and more it would add "feel" to the sticks, instead of there being a snap point, where suddenly you get the commanded rate instead of the commanded angle, you get a smooth transition, so you can learn when you push the sticks more, it will start rotating instead of increasing angle, and then you can learn to balance at higher angles, reducing the effect of the angle return until eventually you're in Acro Mode, with no Angle correction.
I remember that in the sim i was flying acro and practised everything in acro, but then when i first flew my drone it was in angle mode and it made me so confused that i sent the drone directly into the tree xD
Versions 4.4 and onwards use the Cloud Build system, which requires the user to select the receiver protocol they want to use before the firmware is built. The default is CRSF, if you're using something else, you'll need to pick the applicable protocol

The statement on anglemode is wrong, it still sliedes through the turn. (Joshua actually tried that in a recent video, so mby search that if you want to find out more) I think the new feature is supposed to reduce wobble?
Where do you acquire new Blackbox Explorer? I went to nighties.. I think we would have to compile.. and I looked at latest time stamps.. they're still old.. where do we try out newest Blackbox Explorer?
The bindbutton in the betaflight receiver tab was only there with flight controllers that have an SPI receiver and you had to select the SPI based receiver in the pulldown menu.
Yes but the specific feature that has been announced in 4.5 is that CRSF can now bind via CLI command bind_rx. This command is the same functionality as the Receiver tab bind button. So that's why I was expecting the bind button to be there. I understand that in the past, this functionality has only worked with SPI receivers, but CRSF don't have SPI receivers.
@@TimeFadesMemoryLasts He wasn’t talking about the CLI command but about the bind button on the receiver tab just as the one that was there in 4.4. for SPI receivers. And he was wrong, it isn’t there for CRSF receivers in betaflight 4.5 I never said CRSF had SPI based receivers. It would have been much easier if they just added a bind button instead of using a CLI command to bind. Fortunately all my quads are converted to ELRS so it’s not a problem for me.
@@woltervandenberg It's fixed for CRSF. The bind button is there. Just try it yourself. Binding via command/button still doesn't work on ELRS receivers but that's because the ELRS firmware first needs to update to detect a bind command. But you can definitely see the bind button appearing in the configurator with ELRS receivers on the latest 4.5 zulu.
Just a note....You say you can remove the SD OSD option if you are running HD OSD. It has been my experience that when you remove SD OSD you will not see options for OSD in the configurator You must load SD OSD and HD OSD to get all the OSD options. 😎
Slight correction about EzLanding: It isn't just active when the throttle is at zero. It essentially limits how much airmode is allowed to increase the throttle to the highest of: 1. A value based on how close the most deflected stick is to the maximum deflection. If ez_landing_limit is at 25 then 25% stick deflection will let airmode increase the throttle to 50% (which is about as much at it will ever need) 2. The minimum value set with ez_landing_limit (default 5%) 3. The current throttle from the pilot So in a way EzLanding will be active all the way to about 50% throttle if the sticks are centered. Also, it's not just good for landings. it's also useful for unsticking whoops from walls and should make flyaways on arm much less common.
so who knows how to get the BBE and gps data/map working? I upgraded to 4.5, did some flights, currently on BBE 3.6... no "export gpx" option. is there a beta version of BBE im missing?
agree 10000% that horizon mode is pointless.. when my daughters where learning i put angle/horizon/acro on a 3 position switch IN THAT ORDER and 99% of the time they didn't even notice they where in acro and not horizon. i think mostly because they would just flip the switch all the way down not realizing horizon was the middle position.
Not knowing what I don’t know, I flashed 4.4.2 on my new iFlight. Should not have because I don’t have a gyro now. Tried to reinstall 4.3.1, still no gyro. I have no clue! Do I need to buy a new FC?
Question regarding GPS rescue. I plan to film mountain biking in the woods with my GepRC Cinelog 35 v2 (equipped with goggles 2 and DJI Remote 2-yes, I know, nobody likes the DJI remote, but I do). Because I live in Germany, I am a little bit afraid of switching to FCC mode, so my range is somewhat low. I have set up my GPS rescue so the quad rises to 30m and then returns home when the connection breaks. Assuming I'm in the woods, the connection breaks, and the quad rises, will the motors burn out when it gets stuck in a tree, or can it detect that and switch the motors off?
Don’t use rescue in the forest. Instead of you knowing exactly where it is and just picking it up. GPS rescue will crash it in a random place, likely a tree, and you will probably never find it.
Hi joshua, I have a problem after the updates to 4.5, the OSD tab disappears from betaflight as well as the OSD on the glasses. So I come back to version 4.3 and everything works normally. Does anyone have an idea to solve the problem. Of course I tested on several drones, different brand stacks, new betaflight version…etc.
Heard rumor that the speedybee F405 V3 OSD/black box event were resolved in 4.5. I can have OSD disabled on a switch if I need to record black box. but I cant do both. at least not a base install. Im kinda interested in new Custom defines though
@Joshua Bardwell one more thing. In relation to this note: Previous filters, PID settings, and other tuning values should not need to change - can you specify which part of CLI diff from 4.4 can be copy and paste to the BF 4.5?thank you in advance
This hobby is all about flashing firmware on FC’s, discovering new features and trying them out at the flying field (wherever that may be). I actually don’t enjoy flying quadcopters that much as I like watching videos of JB and putting them into practise. Thanks, JB! 🎉
I used horizon mode for maiden los flights(because i suck at los) to be able to push it a bit harder, but after listening to this i wonder if this was a valid test
I agree with the comment below. I don't personally like the new Horizon mode.. I wish there was an option to choose old or new horizon mode. I fly LOS just as much as FPV mode due to being an rc pilot my whole life. I even did flight demo's for school classes etc. with old Horizon mode i could do inifinite flips and rolls and do all sorts of crazy. then all i had to do is center the sticks and viola! i was level flying again and everyone thought i was the best pilot in the world. haha. but without knowing about the new horizon mode. i did an infinite flip and completly throttled into the middle of the paved road and detroyed my quad.. which sucks but it gave me an excude to finally upgrade to the DJI o3 and goggles. but yeah. US LOS pilots want old horizon to remain an option. how do we get the word out on that.. i mean they already have the code. cant we just make it a cli command or an option?
That warning sounded like it was put in there for iFlights Patrick LOL. Feel bad for that guy for all of the BS he's dealt with over people updating BF.
Tried it today with my hglrc zeus f722 mini , crsf, hdzero, no gps. In configurator all looked good, inkl. Receiver and modes but wont let me arm. Back to 4.4.3 all fine.
It's a known issue now in RC1, the 4.5 version is not final yet and should most definitely be fixed in the full release. It has to do with GPS features being enabled at build time, but no GPS hardware connected. You can build without GPS features enabled, or flash 4.5 Zulu
Seems like the new business plan for Horizon mode is as an acro mode trainer instead of a self leveling mode with some acro features. To your point though, you are least likely to need the assist when close to level, so...??
My iNAV on my 8" when i fly to mountain from home depot it always goes all the way around the buildings around the block 🤣 something throws arrow off haha comes back from behind me 🤣

Binding via command/button still doesn't work on ELRS receivers but that's because the ELRS firmware first needs to update to detect a bind command. But you can definitely see the bind button appearing in the configurator with ELRS receivers on the latest 4.5 zulu.
@@woltervandenberg The bind button is there. try it out
My Betaflight 4.4.3* takes 10 years for the GPS M10 chip to lock on Satellites. I hope BF 4.5 has fixed that issue. (I fly a BOB57)
Just a note....You say you can remove the SD OSD option if you are running HD OSD. It has been my experience that when you remove SD OSD you will not see options for OSD in the configurator
You must load SD OSD and HD OSD to get all the OSD options. 😎
Slight correction about EzLanding:
It isn't just active when the throttle is at zero. It essentially limits how much airmode is allowed to increase the throttle to the highest of:
1. A value based on how close the most deflected stick is to the maximum deflection. If ez_landing_limit is at 25 then 25% stick deflection will let airmode increase the throttle to 50% (which is about as much at it will ever need)
2. The minimum value set with ez_landing_limit (default 5%)
3. The current throttle from the pilot
So in a way EzLanding will be active all the way to about 50% throttle if the sticks are centered.
Also, it's not just good for landings. it's also useful for unsticking whoops from walls and should make flyaways on arm much less common.
Geez... Just learn to land...
See I just got back into flying Kiss and go figure another Bf update 😂😂😂
If I recently did the build for the JB SE 5’. If I update the beta to 4.5 how do I keep the settings you helped walk us through?
I finally switched to Acro and it's because of Rotorflight and helicopters!
so who knows how to get the BBE and gps data/map working? I upgraded to 4.5, did some flights, currently on BBE 3.6... no "export gpx" option. is there a beta version of BBE im missing?
agree 10000% that horizon mode is pointless.. when my daughters where learning i put angle/horizon/acro on a 3 position switch IN THAT ORDER and 99% of the time they didn't even notice they where in acro and not horizon. i think mostly because they would just flip the switch all the way down not realizing horizon was the middle position.
Took me a whole day to figure out when I updated my bind and fly the it change the orientation. Quad kept flipping on take off.
The sanity check SHOULD detect if it's crashed and disarm. But it's all very experimental and there are risks involved.
Could you not trigger FPV camera angle mixing on the same switch as angle mode.
Well here I am: after this semester, I have all my quads on 4.3 so, do I want to upgrade?
i changed some settings in the cli and wondering if this would accomplish the goal below. # get horizon
horizon_level_strength = 90
profile 0
Allowed range: 0 - 100
Default value: 75
horizon_limit_sticks = 180
profile 0
Allowed range: 10 - 200
Default value: 75
horizon_limit_degrees = 250
profile 0
Allowed range: 10 - 250
Default value: 135
horizon_ignore_sticks = OFF
profile 0
Allowed values: OFF, ON
horizon_delay_ms = 100
profile 0
Allowed range: 10 - 5000
Default value: 500
Heard rumor that the speedybee F405 V3 OSD/black box event were resolved in 4.5. I can have OSD disabled on a switch if I need to record black box. but I cant do both. at least not a base install. Im kinda interested in new Custom defines though
It's a known hardware fault that was verified between the developers and manufacturer. It's not really something that can be fixed in firmware
@@Vitroid understood, but it manifest in 4.3. Apparently it's fixed in INAV7 also.
My workaround now is enabling one or the other on a switch.
Updated to 4.5 and Instead of 3 min satellite lock on, I get maybe 1 sat after 30 mins.
Thanks, JB! 🎉
12:14 😂... It wasn't me.
I used horizon mode for maiden los flights(because i suck at los) to be able to push it a bit harder, but after listening to this i wonder if this was a valid test
I began using horizon mode about a year ago, only on my whoops - it made it real easy to flip and roll LOS
Hobbywing F7 flight controller will not arm with BF 4.5. Had to go back to 4.4 😢
Tried it today with my hglrc zeus f722 mini , crsf, hdzero, no gps.
My iNAV on my 8" when i fly to mountain from home depot it always goes all the way around the buildings around the block 🤣 something throws arrow off haha comes back from behind me 🤣
Please Joshua can you look at OpenIPC the open source Digital FPV system. Is this the next big thing? Your take would be really nice.
