There's so much in this (as usual 😊). I could sit with you for hours .. days maybe, discussing these things. Two quick thoughts: Community is comprised of individuals. A healthy community cares for its individual members. Traditions do not preclude change. I understand why people think that, but one of our traditional stories is that of the White Buffalo Calf Woman. It is a story of change. The plains peoples' stories of great floods are also stories of change.
Great video! People mistakingly think that traditions mean always doing things the same way. That’s way too narrow a way of thinking about it. Traditions are subject to evolution like everything else. They must grow, adapt and change in order to survive. They must continue to have heart - people must invest and commit in traditions in order for them to continue, so the tradition mist engage in a delicate dance with their practitioners, who are growing adapting and changing because they are living breathing human beings. Traditions survive, and people nurture them, when the traditions continue to help people live better lives. Traditions do that best when they adapt to the conditions imposed by changing times. This does not mean changing everything according to the latest trend. A tradition worth practicing will readily offer benefits that show why it is different from and better than the latest trend. If that weren’t the case, people wouldn’t be practicing it or even know about it in the first place. Traditions and the people they serve are always in a process of renewal.
"Dont ask for more than what you need" - yes, I think that is a good standard to live by however I think the deeper meaning is to be thankful for what you have been given at this time and point and this may change in future. it is wise not to be jealous of another's good fortune or blessings, but instead be happy for them. We humans have a tendency to be disgruntled at times with what we dont have overlooking the fact, that there are always those with more and those with much less. Smudging/Praying for one another is important for a more complete healing and growth. I pray for Creator to open our eyes to see more clearly as Creator desires us to see. Miigwetch!
I have learned much from your videos, including this one today. Your teaching points today are perfect and addressed some areas of interest to me. Chi miigwech.

Osiyo on the Dark Side of the Moon! One White Brother here of mixed heritage. What one white? The one who one. OB1. Pick another color! Gosh darn golly he must of jumped right off the screen! While that may be funny to you what I’m about to say is quite real… “Our conversation with the Federal Gov. to Free Native American Political Prisoner Leonard Peltier who’s been falsely imprisoned going on half a century and to honor the Indian Treaties (pre-constitutional law) forming the basis of our great nation was almost entirely redacted on national TV shortly before the insurrection because it demanded that the then President also relinquish the nuclear codes which has never been done. Oct. 2020 I spoke with at least around a dozen federal agents including the FBI and even the US Navy. Trump says before being elected, “We have nuclear weapons so why can’t we use them?” Nancy Pelosi confirmed to our international audience on national TV that indeed they where removing the nuclear codes with the help of the CIA and if anyone has any questions they could just call up and ask. What followed only confirms nuclear tensions where about to explode. The redaction is worth at the minimum trillion$ more than all moneys because with nuclear war lights out! Nothing! This simultaneously addressed the other largest nuclear power and all the rest without having to address any of them directly except our own.” This is a true story. If you alike what you see please support the Peacekeeper. Please allow me to retire and pass the torch. I should not need to utter another word. What was done never needs to be repeated. The whole story must be told with or without the redaction so what happened in Japan never happens again. The hardest work is finished and far too much already been sacrificed. We’re much too close to loosing everything. The freedom of all unjustly incarcerated sets the precedence both on the national and international scale for human rights violations leading us into this mess. If we cannot connect the bigger picture to what is happening on the human scale we’ll loose everything within the next century including the environment. “We inherit the earth from the future generations.” Thank You! I can’t get a hold of my family on my father’s side. But they hold a lot of information about my connection to my native roots. How do I still get information on my family.
Hi Mallory, interesting video, I can totally understand and relate to Indigenous teachings as going through my our journey. I have learned a lot and at the time I did not understand any of the teachings, nor did I understand them and their meanings. However, as all my mentors and spiritual leaders have told me, " you do not understand them now or what their purpose is, but in time you will know where the fit and where they will guide you in life." I also, learned that every teaching we receive in life, were not always meant for us, but it is what we take from it to fit our needs at the time, is what we learn from it. We only take what we need and leave the rest for someone else. I too had asked a lot of questions at the beginning and we also need to ask not so many questions at times, or we truly miss what the teaching is giving us. Patience, being humble and honest with ourselves will bring us to our own self awareness and balance in life. Miigwech!
Hi Mallory! Interesting video and genuine concerns for all involved. Sometimes as I think is the case here, it is the way some things are being worded, but also interpreted. I will explain...*in my lifestyle and education, there is Tradition (capital T) and tradition (small t.) Capital T is referring to the Truths (nature or higher teachings) that cannot be changed while Small t is referring to customs that may change - add to or decrease over time but maintain the basic idea or thought and from one community to another (clothing, music, dance, foods etc.) *Smudging, like prayer is to offer thanksgiving and if asking for something, to be sure it is of necessity to help one's (or another's) health, soul, education, provisions or just insight and discernment for a problem or decision. The main point would be not to get greedy with what we want - like an entitlement or something that will be wasted and not provide spiritual growth and enlightenment and benefit more than self. We would ask for something that Creator desires us to have - not just what we alone desire to have. *Wisdom works both ways - the one providing and the one seeking. Being respectful toward an elder who has lived experiences is a good and proper thing to do. At the same time, it is wise to search out other elders and perhaps books where even more experiences can be shared. Be selective in choices when actually acting upon the wisdom given to us. We need discernment. So, all in all how we word our advice and teachings is important, and how we interpret and discern it is also important. If we dont feel well, how can we help others feel well - of course we need to take care of ourselves. Community begins in the family and grows out into the bigger community - it is all family (being brothers and sisters in our humanity and it is all community learning, growing and sharing while working toward the same goals. Love and forgiveness is needed in these areas. Peace...Miigwetch!

You are right in noting that some people do interpret these things in narrow ways that impair needed personal and community growth.
