Sustainability Built to Last

When you’re a water provider tasked with meeting the water needs of more than 2 million people, you’re going to need to build stuff that works and stuff that lasts. Pipelines. Pump stations. Balancing reservoirs. It’s all part of an infrastructure system that keeps the water flowing from reservoirs to our taps.
Years ago, securing construction projects was all about the low bid. But, the long-term costs of meeting our water needs with low bid contractors started to weigh on our system. We realized low bid doesn’t translate into high quality. And so based on our experiences, over the decades we started to modify how we bid for and build projects.
It’s not about low bid, but about life cycle costs. So, contractors are not competing to get the job. They’re competing to provide us value over the life of the project. Big difference. In addition to costs, we’re also looking at the impact our projects have on society, the environment, and future generations. And in the end, we get high quality infrastructure that’s built to last. Sustainability is part of our DNA.
