The Invasion of Savage Cabbage

  • Maintaining the 26-mile Trinity River Floodway in Fort Worth is a major responsibility of the Tarrant Regional Water District. We do it to preserve the integrity of the levee system built to keep floods at bay.
One of the primary ways we keep the levee system in good shape is making sure it's covered in a carpet of vegetation, which holds the soil in place. And that involves mowing - lots of it.
That's where the savage cabbage enters the picture. It's an invasive plant that loves to take advantage of disturbed areas. You often see it along stretches of roadway construction. And now you're seeing more of it creeping in on the floodway.
Savage cabbage (Rapistrum rogusum) is an annual plant that gets an early start on Texas natives and outcompetes them. It grows fast and shades out seedlings of other plants.
On the surface, it may look like a Texas wildflower. But, it's not. And we're trying to get rid of it. The most effective way is by pulling it up by the root.
That's why we support groups like the Young Women's Leadership Academy, who started the Savage Cabbage Bash in spring 2016 to try to remove the plant from our floodway. It's a hefty task. But it seems to help in the areas they sweep through.
We appreciate the effort. And we will keep supporting efforts like these to keep savage cabbage from taking over our floodway.
