- Crazy hail storm in Phoenix, Arizona stops the whole I-17 freeway near Bethany Road. I started recording once the hail begins to rain down the freeway. I turned off the music so you guys could hear the hail hitting my truck. This stuff is a pretty unusual event for Phx, AZ.

In Chicago, when it hails, people just keep driving. I was kind of surprised when I was caught in a hailstorm here how everyone just kept going at their normal speed.

Here in Arizona, our weather can be easily compared to the drawings of a maniac in a mental institution! From hail to snow! From monsoons to dust storms! Flash floods and dust devils! The whole shebang! We absolutely LOVE it here! :-D
Hell, I even remember that blizzard that happened in FEBRUARY 19, 2013 in TUCSON! I'll have to say, driving at night would have never been more terrifying.

In major hailstorms you suppose to pull over. Because one hail is coming down and you moving forward can cause relative speed of the hail to increase and cause more damage, lot of ice on the road can be very slippery and visibility is reduced to poor levels.

It's almost 14 years later and I'll never forget that day waiting for the bus at 67th and Peoria Ave. First, sideways wind. Then, sideways rain. And then, the reason for the low rumble I'd been hearing, was hail the size of a quarter. At the same time farther west (where I lived) I could see it was bone dry and mostly sunny. I was under the edge of the storm and could see rotation at the southwest corner. It spawned at least a couple tornadoes further north that day. The central part of the storm left auto dealers with massive damage to their inventory. Baseball sized hail broke skylights and windows in homes, then bounced around like pinballs causing more damage. Tile roofs were shattered. What no one was expecting were the dark "bruise" spots on asphalt roofs that showed up days later. Total damage across the metro area was estimated at $2.8 billion, which is $4 billion today in 2024.

Idk that day was weird. Shit was blown over, I'm thinking a really powerful microburst, derecho or a low grade EF 1 tornado. Shit was crazy all day.

damn, why wouldnt you have just pulled over when you were under the overpass and stayed there? you wouldnt have had any damage. i was lucky, my end of town didnt get it as bad as glendale and phx did.

I was in France when it happened and couldn’t figure out what everybody was talking about on the shuttle ride home when I got back. I worked for Allstate as a claims adjuster about a year after this and we were still inspecting roofs for hail damage. At the time, this hail storm in Phx was the single most expensive weather event in history of Allstate.

I also remember the hailstorm we had on Mar 4, 2004, that one was mainly in the east valley, driving down baseline rd in Mesa looked like a winter wonderland the ground was so covered in hail and slush
I worked at a rental car place at this time. For about a year, we were working on cars. Some had to be totaled. It missed the airport. Where I was at 40th st and University, I saw this cloud and wondered what the heck is that? Only pea sized fell there.

I remember these crazy hail storms we got caught in one before in wilcox scard the shit out of me then 5 mins later a big car accident but we had to pull over to even the trucks
I got 1/4 inch hailstones I thought that was bad.
And this just wasn't one part of the city. Phoenix is pretty spread out and this storm covered the whole damn town.

I see hail a lot in Phoenix but never like this. Usually about pea to dime size but not golf ball to baseball size. It's a good thing everyone on the freeway stopped though.

I remember his storm, I was in class at thunderbird high school. The roof was seriously damaged and classrooms were flooding. The damage to the school was so bad it wasn’t worth repairing it or greenway high school and they ended up rebuilding the schools instead

I had to drive out to Baghdad, AZ that day for work, was supposed to go all the way to Kingman, but the roads up there were so bad, that I got the OK to turn around and come back, pulled back into Phoenix around 5pm to see the aftermath!! it looked like a warzone!

I lived near then. Remember that day all to well. We had baseball size hail at our place! And the ground was totally white with hail. At 2:00 am there where still hail the size of golf balls!

Even if it would have cost me a ticket, my ass would have pulled over to the right under that first overpass you went under if my car started getting hit with any hail. I bet you regret not stopping under there. Sorry your car got messed up. That sucks, but it was still a cool video to watch, so I definitely gave it a like.

Sunday, 10/31/10. So you are doing the driving - navigating through this storm on the freeway, and also doing the video recording? At the same time? This kind of weather is so unusual for Phoenix that if you were doing both the driving and video recording, I must say, you certainly had your wits about you. It took all of us Phoenicians by surprise. Very unusual weather. Came on suddenly with (3) different episodes during that Tuesday afternoon. Great footage! Thanks for posting!
