If I lived in an area where large hail was possible, I would keep a box of moving blankets just for protecting cars that were outside when it happened.
Awesome large hailstorm with the sun out. Never seen that in Oklahoma before because that's something that'd usually only happen around the Rockies like in Colorado.
This kind of hail is exceptionally rare here in the Los Angeles Basin and the San Fernando Valley. When it does happen, it's in the wintertime, especially during El Nino. Usually in February.
We had one come through about 10 years ago with grapefruit sized that were rolling along like bowling balls once they hit the ground. And they were coming in on an angle that took out all the windows on our home that faced north. Balls of ice came rolling across the busted out windows across the room and dented the refrigerator on the opposite side of the room. My truck which was parked under a carport sustained damage along one side where the balls of ice bounced off the pavement and up into the truck's side. My neighbor's pickup with sunroof had one ball come through the roof glass hit the steering wheel and bent the horn button so the horn was sounding throughout the storm. It lasted about 20 minutes, preceded by a tremendous lightning storm. The metal roof on my house, which I had just installed was dented severely. The sheriff told us that about half the windows in town were destroyed. Cars that sat outside were totaled.
I remember that like it was yesterday. I was in the chow hall when it hit. Ripped half the roof off. And the hail? OMG!!! The size of freakin' softballs!! I couldn't believe it!!!
My first AFB was there at Altus. My last one was at Sheppard AFB; Wichita Falls, Texas. My wife and myself were at Sheppard from 77 to 79. Almost a month before I got discharged from the USAF a F-4 tornado came through Wichita Falls. 44 people died that day. One fifth of 120,000 people were homeless. There's UA-cam videos about this tornado.
No garage? I would have jumped in when it first started and headed towards a gas station or parking garage. Not too lazy to stand their and film but a little too much work to try to save the vehicle. Good work genius!
@@paulsmith3778 Yes, adding the forward velocity of DRIVING in a hailstorm is SO much better than leaving it parked where it's partially shielded from the direction the hail is coming from. Apparently you're no "genius" either.
Can you not see it's only a ONE CAR GARAGE and just maybe there's another car in it already? If you took the time to read the description, that's exactly what happened Einstein! SMH
I hope you guys are doing okay here in Sydney we have had massive hail last year 20th December and now a month ago or something like that another big hailstorm came again
I feel bad for those people who's vehicles, houses and businesses that got damaged by this hail. Hopefully, they're insurance covers hail and storm damage. Allstate Insurance covers it.
Cool story, bro: I used to work for a DIY chain store. We had a regular customer who was...I dunno, he had a REAL heavy eastern European accent - Chech, Hungary, Romania maybe? Nobody ever wanted to wait on the guy because he had real bad BO and always bitched about how stupid Americans are. He was in the store one afternoon when we got a severe t-storm or tornado warning. Green sky, golfball size hail, easily, maybe bigger. The whole damn nine. Lot of people were around the exit doors watching their cars get pounded and this guy comes up, says (loudly) something about "Stupid Americans scared of weather" and barges out the door. About a minute later he staggered back in bleeding badly from his face and head, after getting beat down by hail stones. Store manager called an ambulance and he got hauled off. Never saw the guy again after that. Maybe he embarrassed himself a little.
This looks like base housing. What they said about the view of Altus was correct … it really did look best in the rear view mirror (when I left for the last time).
I was stationed at Altus AFB from 1973 to 1974 and I didn't think it sucks and I was and now from Michigan. One dust storm through there and that was the extent of "bad weather" there. But I have ski trips on my "bucket list". My civilian supervisor let me have time off. But I didn't tell him where I planned to go. Go to Colorado to go skiing for 4 days off including the weekend. A half day skiing at Vail, a full day skiing each at Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Aspen Mountain. Then drive all the way back to Altus AFB with no sleep and stop for just gas and caffeine. Got to base, off loaded car to my dorm, changed into my fatigues, when to my warehouse job and finally no breakfast. I was on time or maybe just a few minutes late after 8:00 am. Did this a few weeks later minus Aspen Highlands and last place went to Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico for skiing. Okay, people may think and say I was lucky, very lucky that I didn't crashed my car, car accident, caught in blizzard. This was back in the day when it was 55 mph national speed limit on the nation's highways. Also going westbound on Interstate 70 up to Loveland Pass was backed for 5 miles to the Eisenhower Tunnel. The eastbound tunnel through Loveland Pass wasn't completed at the time. So both directions had two lanes converted to one lane each through the westbound completed tunnel. It's been completed since 1977 I think. Now it's known as the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel. The highest elevation tunnel in the world over 12,000 feet. And the longest in the USA.
Not gonna put anyone down thanks for sharing your experience. It is too bad you were unable to shelter your cars. I’m sure it was a huge pain to go through the insurance & deductible ordeal. I’m from Amarillo not far from y’all. I’ve seen a few too.
Two comforters.....TWO!!!!! The umbrella protects your head and the comforters cover the windshield and most windows. Ya let em drip dry later & run them thru the dryer afterwards. Saves $$$$$$$$$ and the inconvenience of waiting for glass to be replaced. Sheeeeeze!
Hopefully, you didn't get clobbered by those hailstones! Hailstones the size of softballs? Man, hailstones that size could break a person's skull, and kill you! We don't know each other, although we have the first same name, but I'm glad you're still alive and kicking!!!
Is it not common for people to cover their cars as a hail storm approaches? Of all the hailstorm videos I’ve seen, I don’t think I’ve seen a single car cover 🤔 Seems odd to me. I’d be watching the rain radar and getting out there with covers, or better yet, finding a car park building to shelter in
The movement of the camera was way too fast and was making me sick... I understand that you were excited and wanted to catch a lot of different areas but... it was way too fast and never got a really good look at what was going on. Either pick one spot or slow down on the turning of the camera. Just saying...

Seeing it now, hasn't changed _at all_ and brings back a lot of memories.

Yeah, ouch...
It's a nice day for some hail damage to the vehicles, huh?
*Don't mind me, just driving my Porsche outside...*
Or the 1965 Mustang
Ouch

Would do no good. Hail is heavy enough at times to shred moving blankets.

I got caught in hail like that once. Hurt like hell!

I remember Altus AFB. Lived there from 1979 to 1983. Still remember the May 11, 1982 tornado that hit the base.

The ice machine is running wide open today! It definitely pays to have full insurance coverage on your vehicle(s) at times like these!
Wondering why he didn't put his car in the garage.
Probably, like everybody else, the garage is full of shit. No room for vehicles.

It's crazy seeing that it's hailing even though it's sunny.

Man I love hail, it's my most favorite 🤩
Not if you have a car without a garage and shingles on your roof !!
A lot less camera movement would have been nice, but still an impressive hailstorm.
This is why you should have a clean garage to pull you vehicle in lol...if you have one that is.
Idk about where you live but in America where this takes place it is common for a family to have 2 cars and these houses have 1 car garages.
I believe it was 1986 when I went there to work a hail storm (i'm a roofer) It was large hail them Some softballs.
