Absolutely love your honesty Adrian, we farm a small mountain farm in Waterford that my dad built from nothing.. We are so grateful he did that hard work so we have what we have.. The family farm is what Ireland is known for... Keep up the good work and congrats to you and your wife on the recent good news!!
Right across the board, you are right on the money! We milk about 35 cows on the family farm, and so far (knock on wood), we are still paying the bills.😄 Keep up the good work and keep telling it like it is ✔️ .

Hi There! Just stumbled across your video and really liked it! A lot of truth here! My wife and I are first-generation small dairy farmers in Washington State, USA. We built our farm up from scratch and are milking a small Jersey herd and processing the milk ourselves to sell at our local farmer’s market. We also make UA-cam videos about our farm. Thank you for sharing and count us as new subscribers!

Great advice Adrian, all of it. My father hadn't much but whatever he had he worked damned hard for it, no easy breaks. His motto was "Let your eye be your judge, and your pocket your guide". Avoid debt like the plague and only borrow if you're buying land or for something that's going to make you money or at the very least is going to make your life easier. Sadly he passed away in 1990 at only 67 with prostate cancer. He left lots of good memories. I have now run the beef and sheep farm for 30+ years, got rid of 2 parasitic siblings out of the equation, expanded the farm a few times when land became available. But I will leave you with one word of advice, mind your health. A one man operation can be devastated if you take sick, particularly when the family is small. This almost happened to me last year, but thank God for the HSE and the wee country we live in, they fixed me up like new. I had 3 heart attacks in one day April 1st 2020, luckily I was in hospital when it happened. I was sowing fertiliser the evening before and felt bad and knew something wasn't right. Got into A and E 8pm, at 3am in coronary care I was dead for almost 8 minutes, 7am same again, 12 noon in helicopter heading for Galway, 40 minutes run from Letterkenny. 4 1/2 hours wide awake in theatre while they put in a stack of heart stents. 7pm another heart attack. They resuscitated me and 5 days later got home. Took a month before I got going right again. Avoid stress, keep people out of your life that stress you out, and take time to smell the countryside around you and make a bit of time for the young ones. It can all be taken away in a snap.
You are so right!! . I'm 33 years old and have been farming all my life Trying to take over from my parents It has been in my family for 5 generations. My family moved from Kilkenny Ireland and Bought land in Australia in the 1800s I fill a trimets amount of pressure to Continue the legacy But the future is not looking good for dairy farming in Australia😐 It is either get bigger or get out !! I have to make that decision
Fair play to you and the family you deserve it all. Great respect to you for saying “we didn’t get it easy” “we worked hard” behind every single great farm is a wife/partner supporting, and rightly so they deserve half the praise and reward.
Love your videos , no crap just straight talk. You are 100% correct that it’s the quality of the cows that count not the number. Best wishes from Tipperary.
Thanks so much Adrian for those words Everyone calls me a fake farmer becuae I'm barely on the farm while I'm trying to juggle family stuff, school and just free time to myself, I'm gonna start trying to work harder and ignore them lot Cheers Adrian 🍻
Great video and insight ! You should be seriously proud my man. I worked on a dairy farm as a kid with my uncle. Summer/October holidays and any other chance I got. Always always wanted to work on a farm my uncle always talked me out of it. 4 years as a car mechanic apprentice. 8 years operating heavy plant (which I love) and now 2 years into a complete career change (not loving it) I have a wife and kids and my job now allows me bundles of time at home which I love. God my heart still lies with farming/agriculture though. Your videos help me keep in touch and feel nostalgic and happiness watching. Thankyou
Adrian I've been watching your videos for a few days now! And what I've seen your definitely a man of your word! You say things how it is and honest about everything. Your a true gentleman and you keep a real tidy farm and you look after everything total respect for you! Keep up the great work.
Aidrian you're an inspiration to me and im sure many more people my age. Your a brilliant man and i love all your videos. Fair play to you and the rest of the team for all the work you do
Good man Adrian. Very well said. We milk 55 cows and make a good living. We have neighbours all round us with a lot bigger herds but don't let it bother us that we are not as big. Like you said we look after our own ladies because if we don't they won't look after us. Keep up the good work, myself and my 2 kids love watching your videos. Congrats to you and your wife on the wonderful news. Delighted for ye both
I love seeing a fella like urself with the right mind set .. im 33 i a farm with 350 head . 95 milking compared to 120 last producing same volumes also have 35 purebred Angus cows .. I do this with my dad and tis grand tough at times but just grand . But only for starting milk recording last year I b still in a loss with a 120 cows milking .. great video as always keep em coming👌👌😁
It's really shows you take pride in your work, and in the things you've managed to acquire to better your farm. That's rare these days, and a shining example to your girls. I hope they follow your example, as we need more women in agriculture, in various roles - farmer, vet, and every other thing that can help to make agriculture more sustainable, safer, and successful.
Hi Adrian, I went to Ballyhaise once upon a time and I milked cows for thirty years on my farm in Tipperary. I’m living in Somerset now where my wife hails from but still have the farm. I’d recommend watching Ryan Blacks videos, I think he’s amazing. He’s not from a farm background but he has the love and vision and a plan to farm in his own right, and he has to be admired for someone so young. I look forward to all your videos. Keep up the good work. John
I watch Ryan too John, but look at how tired and knackered he looks, he’s burning out, he’s young of course. I was shocked at how knackered he looked in the video he posted the other day. A bit worried about him to be honest,

@@Mikemurphy920 l have to agree he’s overdoing it somewhat but we’ve all done it from time to time. Hopefully he’s sensible enough to look after himself, otherwise there’s not much point
Great advice from a man that has been through the mill. You should consider motivational speaking if you ever give up in the farming. No nonsense honesty is rare these days. Well said.
I know of no herds in Aussie that small, big corporations are taking over with massive herds, mainly super funds. Definitely no grants or subsidies in Aussie and NZ.Impress with your property very neat, tidy and no junk around, keep up the good work
Great Video Adrian. I’m a similar size of farmer as your self, In my late forty’s. Started out with very little machinery and bad housing but over the last 30 years that has changed through hard work and the odd tear! I have been told that You’ll never last! that farms are getting bigger, you need to do this and that! And truth be told av seen farms going from 50 cattle to 500 cattle in this area and most are not here now. Some of them haven’t even time to eat a ice cream! I have time with my family and the farm. Love working with my cattle, I know every move they make and they know every move I make. Like your self I hope that doesn’t change, because once it’s gone it’s gone for good!
Your videos have been a blessing Adrian. I live in Fiji and its hard to get these valuable insights locally so i have to rely on videos like yours to grow my small farm. God bless
It sounds like running a farm can be stressful and hard work. What you said made a lot of sense to me and I'd like to see small farms continue.Good to see the swallows in the video and we can thankful for farmers like you providing us with milk to go on our cereals.
Thanks Adrian for talking a bit of sense... There is definitely people out there with an agenda that isn't necessarily for our benefit... Keep doing what you are doing... Good luck
That's an unreal video Adrian, very very rare to get such an honest and open view from a fella on his own farm, no hiding!! Very commendable & I fully agree with you, I do hope there's always going to be a place for the man doing 40 to 70 cows, 1 man show type job.
Really honest video. I’ve heard it said that a lot of farms are ‘only washing their face’ as in, they barely break even and that the off farm income is what the family lives on. I don’t know if your wife works but most small to medium farms that I know of can only enjoy some comforts such as a nice house, car or holidays because of the wife’s income.
I have to say Adrian that is one of your best videos I watched them all .Great advice for any young farmer out there 👌I have at least ten channels that I watch all farming ones and I always leave a comment or a like it does make someones day when you do say nice things 👍
I love your positive attitude. Your a great example to all small young old ago anyone thinking of getting into farming. Keep doing what your doing. I live in Canada and love driving through the country side looking at all the wonderful fields
Great to hear that there’s a future for the small farm in Ireland. Industrial farming is not the way to go. I have to admire your honesty and (hard) work ethic.
Adrian . The minister for agriculture should be made watch this video ...over and over again until he gets the message... As the saying goes you can satisfy the needy but you can't satisfy the greedy. Great video inspirational especially for young lads and girl's interested in farming..
VERY NICE video, you farm is as well, in my contry (uruguay) the small farmers is extinguishing for the expensives for produce milk, the big farms want more and more lands forgetting to take care of the environment as small farmers do. REGRADS FROM URUGUAY.
Yes Adrian, quality for quantity! I have a oneman practice for Osteopathie in Switzerland. I eork alone and take my time for the patients. It pays off. I always have 110% full. 👍👍
Great video, my father and his uncle split our farm from 120 cows with 40 acres to 60 cows and 20 acres we are up with 160 cows and 40 acres in 17 years so never give up we are still paying the bills butt we couldn't make a living because we need to pay for the sheds by the splitting and the choise for us was stop and sell the farm but we growed and now we are happy.
Finally I get the straight truth. I'm lookin at getting into farming and was thinking of goin into business wit my cousin but u said what I was think bout partnering up wit another farmer. Thank you, thank you, thank you
One of your best. I came home to farm in 2001. Worked crazy hours. I remember the stress of those grant payments. It was the biggest loan I’ve ever taken out. I couldn’t sleep from the stress.
You said about quality Aiden and the best two bits of advise I got when I started was 'the day you buy is the day you sell' and 'a bad one eats the same as a good one' beef here but I think in any walk of life its the same , great video
Firstly I would like to congratulate you and your family for the news of your future addition. My journey into farming pretty much mirrors your own. It is true what they say that hard work is never easy and easy work is hard to find and is not what you have but what you do with what you have. You are the voice for all small farmers and they will always be required.
Adrian, this was a brave but truthful video and should serve as a true idea of the job to the young coming on behind us. I’ve been & done exactly the road you’ve been down and I’ve nothing but respect for the operation you now run. All your implements are in tip top condition and people will always be looking for your stuff when you sell it. I wish you nothing but success and a long and fruitful life 👍
Love this video Its so recognizable. Allot of these lessons I learned the hard way too, but some I did right out of gut feeling. Stopped horse riding due to no time, now three years in I took it up again, turns out it clears my head and tunes my stature muscles. I agree 50 good cows is a better life than 100+ average ones. I wish you well.
lets hope small family farms keep going ,when we got to 150 /180 cows i got out of farming ,now i am 70 years old , still miss it. good luck your a good man.
Your top man Adrian I was brought on a farm me dad always asked for are help an paid us a bit of pocket money it taught us well hard work never hurts good luck an do well😊
Hi Adrian great video I went down expansion route but went renting land first before I went pouring concrete and stainless steel unfortunately rent started going through the roof before I could get cow numbers up had a few hairy years trying to stedy the ship with dry cattle before I had too call it quits and give up land rental I felt a complete failure having to cut down but my wonderful wife said to me you had too give it a go to find out when I finally realised this i copped on and i milked my 60 cows payed off my big super levy bill from 2015 and other stuff now I enjoy my farming and I am making a resnable living out of it and as the older I get I now realize it s great too be involved in a career which motivates me which I have control over and I'm not surfing burnout as one old timer said to me when I was young buck cows are a vocation not a career choice best of luck to you and your family
I’ve been watching you for a while and never knew you only had 50 cows milking. I always thought you work as larger farms do and naturally had more cows. Great video and fair play to you grafting for all you have. Inspirational as always ♥️
"Creagh farm".. a young lad from Wexford. Very small basic dairy farming family, 3 at a time in parlour. No greedy factory farming there. He's off to college at min I think. I enjoy his content. Good luck to him.
What an excellent video and a lovely thing to do for the young youtubers. I have 5 daughters and my 11 year old Daisy makes and edits these videos. She loves farming and loves making videos for everyone to see. She gets very excited if she gets a new subscriber or if her videos get some likes and comments. Thank you. Keep up the good work. Carl
Well done on your farm and your hard work for the last 20 odd years. Considering the policies that will be implemented in the next 5 years: If we cut the national herd by 10% across all farmers, your 5 cows are a lot more important to you than the 50 cows in a 500 cow farm. (all things being equal). This reduction in income will not be covered by any "extra" subsidies, because what the EU and the national government have done is reduce and re brand the farm subsidies to make it look as if farmers are being compensated with extra subsidies. If we have to reduce production to save the environment then that reduction needs to be replaced by (a) increase the litre price, or (b) the gross income loss should be covered by the EU/Gov. If trees shrubs etc. have to be planted then the subsidies kick in. Remember, we as farmers will - like everyone else- have to pay all the extra carbon taxes as well. Why should agriculture get penalized over and above any other sector. Airlines will add any extra cost onto the ticket. Haulage companies will increase their charges etc. etc. Apologies for the rant -better out than in as they say-. But it was not too long ago that we were all encouraged to increase increase increase.
Great video adrian you have ur priorities right you hit the nail on the head I started out with 35 cows at 80 now built up with very little debt and good breeding and hard work fair play to you well done adrian.
Excellent stuff Adrian 40 to 70 cow man is the real family farm (wish the IFA /Teagasc would realise this) You amaze me with your talents you would tackle any task Congrads on expanding(the family) I wish all you well keep on inspiring us
Well said Adrian some farmer can't can never have enough . you know what you are able to make a living for what you have.keep up the great work and videos.🚜🇮🇪
I grew up on a small farm, milking 15 cows, we weren't the richest people, but we never wanted for anything, that was some very sound advice Adrian, well put, wise man!
Great to here your flying the flag for small dairy farmers, and letting us in on your personal journey, I've said it here before, i am a retired uk dairy farmer now living here in Roscommon some 10yrs, i have also worked, as you did, in my early years on many other dairy farms and i can honestly say your operation is the nicest, cleanest, well set-up unit i have EVER seen, your passion for your stock and also for the cleanliness of your farm is a credit to you, and if there is any young farmer out there watching this and looking to start up they cold do no better than to emulate what your doing.
Fantastic video fair play to you Adrian, absolute truth everything you said, at the end of the day work hard for what you have and follow your dreams don't let people run you into the ground.
I have only just started following you (I know a bit late to the party) but just wanted to say thank you as this is the only video I have found even coming close to this topic. I am potentially in this very situation and any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Literally the best video you’ve made yet Adrian in my humble opinion, your always better off doing less better than a lot badly and for sure there’s much more pleasure to be had doing things properly than spreading yourself to thinly, thanks for all your hard work on the vids
In my view a small dairy farm is around 50 cows or less. As a former Iowa USA farmer.......and having milked around 40 cows....mostly during the summer time......... and now my own son.....just starting his dairy operation with 40 cows. It is doable ! Save your money !
Adrian, absolutely spot on. Love your farm, love the way you farm ,love the honesty and fair play to you and your family for these informative videos. 100% agree, and where I am with farming, I have taken a huge amount of good advice from you and thanks for that. To keep it short, if farming was politics Adrian, I'd want you straight in as Taoiseach.! God bless and by the way, none deserves better than yourself for that tractor, y'er well suited. Thanks again. Johnny, Mallow Cork
great video Adrian you are absolutely right what you said you don't have to be big. I have been watching your videos a while now always find them very good this was the best one yet very honest .I have a small welding fabrication /repair workshop in louth started in 98 (still investing in it) like any business you can't do it overnight . keep up the good work (by the way first time i'v ever commented on a youtube video)
Adrian that was your best video ever I think. I totally agree with your comments about the small farmer. I myself milk 50 cows in co. Cavan. I done an interview on thatsfarming in may 2020 and I made the exact same points that u made on this video. Please keep up the good work. Alan.
Great video Adrian, not a farmer but big fan of yours and my cousin farms similar to you. I've liked yours and will like and follow a less followed farmer too. I love your obvious love for your dad and what he's done. I've had direct experience of farm tragedy through my job, but I like your farm safety culture! Stay safe and look after that lovely growing wee family of yours please!
70 dairy cows in NL, Holland, cows first is really forgotten and I learned last few years, and also soil, we used to stock cows all year in barns, but went back to grazing, I know that's standard in Ireland, but not in Holland, went down to 50% but back to 70% due government/milk factory bonus, but grazing has done a lot to cow health and soil health too. I also learned, healthy soil = healthy plants = healthy cows = healthy milk = healthy calf, and so on. Also did a lot to breeding better cows, and yeah not the huge top milk cows, but cows that fit our barn (1976), and it saved me hell a lot of trouble and also the investment in a new barn, cause it simply isn't necessary. Vet used to visit about every one or two weeks, now this year, ehh, 3 times yet.. Also must say, very clean farm in this video.
Well done I'm a small farmer and your very very right wee need to look after our on little bit and never mind anyone else sometimes more cows means more borrowings. Well said keep the UA-cam channel going 👍
Loved this video!, we are milking 120 at home now we have big dairys all round us milking thousands of cows between them, they will never push us out we will carrying on plodding on.
One decent honest man...

Land price or rent is the biggest issue to most young Farmers. Having a farm handed down is a massive boost. Never take it for granted

God bless
Very very well said couldn't have asked for a better video on my birthday.

It sounds like running a farm can be stressful and hard work. What you said made a lot of sense to me and I'd like to see small farms continue.Good to see the swallows in the video and we can thankful for farmers like you providing us with milk to go on our cereals.
Drew’s Farming life and Harry’s Farm are a couple of my favourite You Tubers worth a watch
Adrian. I couldn't leave this page without saying how good this video is. Thanks. Watching from Norfolk Island, in the South Pacific Ocean.
Fair play well said, and well done for saying it, great to have someone sticking up for the smaller lads!
Excellent. Video regardless of country. Quality over quantity you nailed it. Dairy farms in us getting to large environmental timebomb
Great young youtuber called “the Irish farmer” down in Kerry great videos and a real genuine hard working lad! Go give a look at him! 👍🏻
He didn't do any vids in 2 months he was good
@@richardwalsh6024 He posted a vid today there
This, personal opinion, should be shown to anyone who is thinking or just starting a career in farming. One of your best videos Sir.
Well said. My ancestors came from Ireland and have always had the same values you have.
I wish you nothing but success and a long and fruitful life 👍
Love this video
Its so recognizable.
Your top man Adrian I was brought on a farm me dad always asked for are help an paid us a bit of pocket money it taught us well hard work never hurts good luck an do well😊
Well said Adrian , more farmers like you in the country would be better👍
Same story as my own
Love your honesty. I’m no farmer but love watching your real love for all of your ladies! Congratulations for the new addition soon to come! Stay safe
I’ve been watching you for a while and never knew you only had 50 cows milking. I always thought you work as larger farms do and naturally had more cows. Great video and fair play to you grafting for all you have. Inspirational as always ♥️
Adrian ,like what you said about your father's shed. Your right respect your father's work .
You enjoy Adrian. With your family you work so hard. You deserve it .
Carl
Adrian watch this young girl she is awesome I'm sure your girls would like her to
Well done on your farm and your hard work for the last 20 odd years.
Excellent comments Val big is'nt always beautiful
Quality over Quantity, spot on
Great video adrian you have ur priorities right you hit the nail on the head I started out with 35 cows at 80 now built up with very little debt and good breeding and hard work fair play to you well done adrian.
Excellent stuff Adrian 40 to 70 cow man is the real family farm (wish the IFA /Teagasc would realise this) You amaze me with your talents you would tackle any task Congrads on expanding(the family) I wish all you well keep on inspiring us
Well done Adrian and your wife I’m impressed with your perseverance and being a success and doing it your way For your family . 🙏👍👏
Well said Adrian some farmer can't can never have enough . you know what you are able to make a living for what you have.keep up the great work and videos.🚜🇮🇪
I hope you don't go out of business your a great man and I love your videos
Thank you.
Hi Adrian,
Probably your best video of all times I think. Your honesty and attitude is second to none, fair play to you 👏. 👍
Literally the best video you’ve made yet Adrian in my humble opinion, your always better off doing less better than a lot badly and for sure there’s much more pleasure to be had doing things properly than spreading yourself to thinly, thanks for all your hard work on the vids
Excellent Adrian, always admire your honesty, quality and variety in your videos.
Congrats on the new addition and keep up the good work🐮🚜🚜🚜
In my view a small dairy farm is around 50 cows or less.
Awesome seeing that there is people out there like you!
great video Adrian you are absolutely right what you said you don't have to be big.
This is the best most honest and real video on you tube god bless you Adrian thankyou and look after your lady and kids x
Well done. Brilliant video and by far your best one yet. Your a top man and put this fabulously clear.
Old saying.. "you're better with a wee fire to warm ye, than a big fire to burn ye". So true.
