  • July 16 on The Story: Since the beginning of last year, Oregon's agricultural industry has needed to pay workers overtime - the result of a law passed in 2022. It's been a gradual ramp-up, currently only applying when farm workers labor for 55 hours or more in a week. It will be a few years before farmers need to pay overtime once workers pass 40 hours. But even now, there are indications that farms are doing everything in their power to avoid paying for overtime, mostly by hiring on additional workers and dismissing any who hit the weekly threshold. A farmer who spoke with The Story says that she simply can't afford to pay what it would take to cover overtime wages for her regular workers.
