  • ABOUT JEFF EDMONDSON
Jeff Edmondson is the executive director of Strive, a partnership of postsecondary, K-12, business, philanthropic, non-profit, and civic organizations in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, which is aimed at increasing educational aspirations, achievement, and attainment of students throughout the region. The lessons learned from the development of this partnership are currently being applied in four cities across the country-through a collaborative relationship with Living Cities and the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities-to help ensure resources in these regions are efficiently and effectively supporting the success of every child.
He most recently served as the foundation officer for KnowledgeWorks Foundation. In this role, Edmondson was responsible for assisting the president & CEO by leading and providing support for priority initiatives, communicating on the vision and strategies of the foundation locally and nationally, and managing the relationship with the board of directors.
Prior to KnowledeWorks, Edmondson served as a program assistant at the 21st Century School Fund, where he conducted research, published papers and wrote legislation on local and national policy issues related to school facilities. Edmondson also worked as the peaceable schools coordinator at Woodrow Wilson Senior High School, the largest public secondary school in Washington, D.C. In this role, he was an advocate for teachers and students in the school; built partnerships between the school, organizations and businesses in the community to improve student outcomes; and trained students and staff in mediation and other alternative conflict resolution techniques.
Edmondson has a bachelor's of science in biology from the University of Richmond and a master's in public policy from Johns Hopkins University. In addition, he served as a volunteer and supervisor for four years in Peace Corps Gabon, Central Africa.

    ABOUT TEDx
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

What Mr Edmondson's car analogy doesn't acknowledge is that learners are not predictable machines like cars. Machines work on fixed and relatively unchanging principals. Children are subject to innumerable and often unquantifiable variables such as background, nationality, economic and social positions, religion, family structures, puberty, biology, etc.... It's a cruel irony that often, the most influential and vocal people behind education policy have little to no experience of "on the ground" teaching and learning.

Agreed. It is easy to make the argument that social service agencies and parents will work together, but often parents don't do what is required to make that connection. I worked for a SS agency for three years and tried to connect parents with PsyD.'s, SW's, Head Start, etc., bringing the paperwork to their homes, getting AHCCCS on the phone and still parents would hem and haw and said "maybe later.." It is a nice idea, but the reality is slim.

I hear ya, folks! I think that Jeff does have a specific child in mind, and , of course, there is no 'one side fits all' solution in education. That's why it's helpful to track data but do it on a contintuous basis. Things change, culture changes, new issues emerge, so you can't use data from 5 years ago to solve the problems of today.

I enjoyed your TedTalk. Helped to solidify how we can more accurately support students when we have the right information.

While data privacy is so important, especially for children but the reality is that it is hard to have a full picture without it. Data can be used for good or bad and when it comes to education there are so many benefits.

This sounds like Big Brother. Who makes these decision? What information is there? As a teacher, I'm getting sick of this! Children are not a business or a product that you track!!!

Exactly. What he is talking to is governed by a deficit-oriented neoliberal agenda that commoditises students.

Who is this 'they' who keeps doing things for this hypothetical child? I am pretty sick and tired of these utopian visions based on a corporation (KnowledgeWorks), wanting to sell a product.

Sounds like just a pitch, nothing like either science or education.

Totally agree. 'The signal flashes showing this hypothetical monitoring agency, that the child needs daycare or a math tutor or some food to eat but the agency does not have sufficient resources; so, how does it decide who to divide what it has among the various demands? Or, suppose we do vote out the tax breaks for the 1% and austerity for the poor and underemployed and implement this 'nanny state', what happens to the development of responsible parents and communities. I believe in sharing the wealth and enriching community life for all but this is carrying it too far for even my socialist heart to follow. We have already seen in history what happens when you give such power to the state: more corruption and greed and backroom deals for cronies of the leaders. Further, which seems more manageable to you 20-million data streams feeding automated summarized data into decision algorithms monitored by decision-makers or allocating funds to townships and communities based on collective need for allocation by parent and citizen groups to families based on their willingness to apply and argue their needs? I, for one, choose the more human solution. Centrally Analyze the need data but let people manage their communities based on their willingness to access and use the data.

I was thinking the same thing! Also somehow this system would probably disproportionately track data of students who have grown up disadvantaged in some way. I don't like this idea! How about this? Teachers, let's get to know our kids so that we don't need big brother tracking the data of our students and "meeting their needs" before they've even been asked about?

So many assumptions being made here. This is his ego thinking that he can affect children like this. There is no way people want government to have that much “power”
