Fun fact: Tony Grayson, this game's director as well as composer and the voice of Anton, just said on social media that they've recouped all expenses related to ANTONBLAST's development, production, and marketing, meaning the game is now officially deemed profitable! Feels really good to have a good game be successful in this way! Really hope they'll use the profits from this game to add some cool DLC, particularly what they teased in the Peanut Park section of this game.
I will just say, this game is not Pizza Tower, and you should not play it like Pizza Tower...at least on your first attempt of each level. Take your time and explore (when its not Happy Hour). This game channels Wario Land even more purely, because it is all about maximizing treasure. (In that vein, I do wish it would save your highest chip score for each level) I think it was a good design choice to make Combo Chain a bonus "hard mode" and let you take your time in the default mode. (What wasn't a good choice was tying the combo chain to your health bar, and giving you only 3 hearts for both damage and broken combos...but I digress) This review doesnt mention the boss fights, which is a damn shame, because they are the best part of the game IMHO. Some of the BEST boss fights ever, especially the farther you get through the game. The giant, wacky bosses were a part of the Wario experience missing from PT that you will find better and badder than ever here. If we HAVE to compare them, I cant in good conscience rate this above Pizza Tower, the smooth-like-pepperoni game that deeply encouraged me to sink hours to speed run and combo chain as much as possible. I found there are too many difficulty spikes, frustrations, and issues in Antonblast to get that here...plus I find that Anton/Annie's controls are too wild and imprecise compared to Peppino or even The Noise. But, Antonblast is absolutely still fun on its own right, divorced from comparison to PT. Just...take your time with it.
Worth noting for anyone concerned, the performance issues, as far as I've experienced, do not exist in the Steam version. Either way it's definitely worth checking out!
I saved you 9 minutes: It's absolutely worth it (just keep in mind that it plays nothing like Pizza Tower, treat it more like traditional 2D platformer with nods to Crash Bandicoot and Wario Land 4, it has unique levels with fun gimmicks, fantastic soundtrack, stylish graphics and great representation of urban aesthetics)
My favorite thing to do in any platformer is just recklessly charge through everything. Antonblast letting me do that with just the right amount of friction and a character that I think would do the exact same made for a very satisfying experience
I absolutely love this game but the launch was ROUGH. I bought it the day it came out and the framerate was absolutely atrocious. We had a patch right before Christmas and the game runs a hell of a lot smoother.
I liked the concept of it and the cartoony style it had, but it was too laggy with crashing issues (yes I know there's a patch, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth) and the happy hour segments can be very long and difficult
I highly advise you to give it another go with the patch. I played it at launch and felt similarly, but after the update I just could not put the game down until the credits rolled. It’s not perfect, sure, but it gets so close that I doubt any imperfections will be a dealbreaker.
Anton Blast is better than Pizza Tower IMHO. Pizza Tower puts to kuch pressure on the onus of speedrunning the level and combo chaining enemies and i felt like exploration took a back seat. Much of Pizza Tower's levels are nonsensical and a bit poorly designed whereas AB's levels are absolutely gorgeous and very rarely did i feel like the levels were playing against me. The controls are tighter in Anton, maybe due to its slower pace. Pizza Tower felt way too slippery. The boss battles in AB are some of the best on the switch
OF COURSE YOU LITERALLY INSTANTLY COMPARE IT TO PIZZA TOWER LOL also the only reason it runs iffy is just it has things that the switch just hates in general, on my iffy computer that basically starts heating up to temperatures you’ll REALLY have to get used to, and has a super small 2 hour battery, and antonblast can run for about 6 hours without heat up, so it’s just the switch though I did also get it on the switch, I’d say it’s worth it!
