As a knitter of 10 years I can respectfully say that crocheting is like a foreign language to me 😅 I tried to crochet a square, it turned into a triangle and I had no idea what I did wrong. I can see how crocheting bra top triangles would be super easy and preferable to knitting! I made one cup by accident 🤣🥲

You can tell you're a crocheter by the way you hold your needles and yarn and I mean that in a good way 😅 I used to be the same before I got a lot of practice, I find knitting a bit looser than crochet ? If that makes sense. Don't know how to explain it, but knitting strains my hands less than crochet does. But they both have their good and bad things! Ps. It's casting on and not "chains", but I have been calling crochet hooks "needles" for so long and only your videos made me realise that so no judgement here! Ps 2: you're so good at casting off!!! You gotta teach me those tricks please! Loved this so much!!!!
its funny because people have told me they could tell i knitted before crocheting because of the way i hold my hook lol! I also call crochet hooks needles too!
Also, here's a secret, crochet hooks can help out a lot with casting off for knitting. Much easier to slip that earlier stitch over if you're using a hook.
Omg, I suffered SO much when I started knitting right after learning how to crochet, until I learned continental knitting. Right after two hours, it turned out *GREAT*. And the fact that you took a big project from the start is amazing too, cause you learn way more techniques with an intermediate project rather than knitting a scarf or something easy like that.
I love when you chat with us when we crochet/knit I have no friends who crochet so it feels like I have someone to chill with. (Also crocheting some cows rn 😌)

If you're looking for something even easier, the easiest sweater construction in knitting is typically a top-down raglan. I recommend the pattern Flax by Tin Can Knits. It's free (yay!) and it also comes in children and baby sizes - perfect for practicing on a small scale (and gifting to a little one in your life). look for a bump reading your stitching helps ALOT so don’t try to remember what row your on, look for a bump in purl, and purl in purls, knit in knits. knit has not “bump” purl does. hope this helps!!!

There's a way to fix a previous row with a crochet hook! Knitting is sideways crocheting (to a very limited point lol), so you can slip the stitches off the needle to the place where the mistake is made, start undoing it downwards (which is pulling the stitches out from the previous row) and use your crochet hook to redo the stitches upwards. Its complicated to explain in text but a video can explain it better!
I'm like a month and a half late to the party, but I just wanted to say kudos for taking on such a big project so early! It looks like this was a fairly beginner friendly sweater pattern, but the issue is a sweater is not a very beginner friendly project. When I see a sweater pattern labeled like that I think "Good for someone who's knit some but has never made a sweater before" rather than someone who's just started knitting. I knit for years before even trying to make a fitted garment! And even then, it took me like four or five tries to actually get something that fit me in a way I was happy with. But I've noticed a lot of crochet people pick complicated projects early on, I guess in crochet it makes more sense to start bigger projects sooner? Anyway, your crocheted projects are beautiful, I totally understand it if you want to stick with them, but I hope you give knitting another chance! Mistakes are inevitable, but there's lots of tricks for fixing them, and you make less of them the more practice you get.
You need to be proud of you! Continental knitting! I can continental knit but not purl. I watched in awe as you purled like a champ! Consider a knit 'life line'. After completing a row, thread a tapestry needle with contrasting and smaller yarn. On the live needle with stitches weave the tapestry needle between the knitting needle and the stitch. If you need to 'frog' (rip back) the life line is where you can stop because the stitches can be added to a knitting needle and you are off an running again. Hard to describe but there are videos. Next learn to 'unknit'. Where to put your needle to unknit a stitch and put it back on the left needle. Consider your cardigan as a bed jacket. I personally give my 'opps' to good will. When using a pattern of multiple sizes, print a copy and go through and highlight your size you are making. Enjoy your journey!
I have been crocheting for years but recently learned how to knit. One thing that has been invaluable is learning how to fix mistakes. Watch videos on how to “tink” (knit backwards!) or UNknit. I also learned how to drop a stitch on purpose and then use a crochet hook to pull it back up. That would be how you can fix those random purls you did by mistake! There are lots of helpful UA-cam videos on beginner mistakes and how to fix mistakes.
The best thing you can do is learn to read your knitting as well as learning to “tink” (or unknit) when you recognize a mistake in your current row (possibly the row or two below). I am working on a pretty complex lace tunic and through a lot of experience with knitting and all the increases and decreases, I am able to spot most things that go awry during a row/round. I’ve had to tink ssk’s, k3tog, p2tog tbl etc. multiple times during this project. I hope you continue with knitting!! You are so brave for tackling a seamed cardigan on your first knitting project! Good for you!
I by mistake bought a Harry Potter yarn kit thinking it was a crochet project... just to go home and read KNIT in the front. :( I've been putting it off cause Knitting looks so harddd. But I love watching all your vids. You're so pure!
I would recommend before starting a project is to make a swatch so you can check your tension/gauge. If the tension is too loose (less the number of stitches than the pattern recommends) then you would go down a needle size (or two) if it's too tight (higher number of stitches than the pattern recoomends) then go up a needle size until you can match the gauge on the pattern. It's always interesting seeing people trying out knitting for the first time. I know a lot of people either knit or crochet, but as someone who does both, I would say that both can have their rough parts. It just takes a lot of practice. Sweaters are not the best thing for beginners because it's easy to get frustrated and want to give up, but I commend you for taking a stab at it. I would recommend starting with a garter stitch scarf, washcloth, or any small piece that's worked flat. Sweaters require a lot more techniques and it's better to start with the basics before getting into garments.

I've been knitting for a little while now and even I haven't knit a sweater yet haha You should know that the frustrations (like finding out you're doing the ribbing wrong, didn't knit the right length, etc) is all part of the process of learning and I admire you're ability to keep perservering despite the difficulties!! I know well the frustration of getting to a point in your project where you realized you messed up and contemplate unweaving the whole thing -- it can be very discouraging!! I was always a crocheter everyone called me a crochet queen but then i wanted to knit a pull over sweater and so i did it. I got the ribbing wrong so many times and frogged then started again and in the end it turned out so good. You will become confident enough to frog without taking the stitches off the needles.
You make knitting look so easy and crocheting I do both and it's really hard for me because I have small hands you did really good and the tension on it's perfect just keep practicing your knitting and it will get better I taught myself how to knit off of UA-cam I'm still teaching myself to crochet from UA-cam and your videos help

Around 8:00 ish mark... that is actually seed stitch! It’s very pretty and it’s actually the border in the cardigan I’m making rn! I’ve been knitting for years but this cardigan is my first ever attempted garment in knit. I think it was kinda cute in the end, maybe right around the armpits but I love a good cropped cardigan! I have a few tips for you: 1. Did you gauge swatch? If you don’t know what this is I’m sure you can find a UA-cam video. Depending on your gauge the gauge swatch should show you about whether or not you need to size up/down in needles, change your stitch and/or row count, or maybe it will prove that your gauge is generally dead-on. Check the gauge swatch measurements that are in the pattern if the creator provided 2. Did you check into more than just the size name of the instructions? What I mean is different creators have different ideas of what is a small-medium-large etc. there should be a place in the pattern that gives you each sizes’ cm/inch measurements of the body + final measurements of the garment for that size. I learned the hard way in crochet and knit that sometimes I’m a medium and sometimes I’m a large, I just have to see what size the creator considers my body measurements to be 3. What style of knitting do you do? English is the way I learned but typically my gauge was too tight mostly and too loose in random places. Learning continental knitting helped me even my tension, knit faster, and make knitting easier. I didn’t have the confidence to make a garment until I learned that! Of course, some people are comfortable with traditional styles of knitting like English and that’s fine, you can totally learn how to do everything that way Anyways I hope I didn’t confuse you, your first piece was actually pretty impressive. Love your usual content and I will also be looking forward to possible knitting in the future!
Good tip is to write things down before you start and during the project ( after to if you want ). Helps you keep track and random numbers like 34 wont pop into your brain 🤣☺️😁☺️
As a knitter who has known how to knit for a very long time but just attempted my first sweater this year, this is so commendable!! I’m also trying to teach myself crochet so this was fun to watch in vice versa. It’s definitely very hard to switch from one to the other!
I finished the sweater I was crocheting and am now working on a sunflower granny square blanket for summer. Good effort with the knitting! One of these days I'll try to learn it myself
I just started my own knit sweater I haven’t ver really knit anything before but my first crochet project was a blanket so... I guess I’m an over achiever. It’s going well so far I’m on the back panel which is the first panel I’m starting on and I just finished the ribbing last night. I’m in Kansas right now so hopefully I’ll be able to finish the back panel!
Ribbing was also really difficult for me in the beginning, I would recommend knitting in the round, then you don’t have to deal with purls, except for on the ribbing

Yes when you start with purl after you started with the knit. Just to let you know what you did was the seed stitch. Pretty stitch but yes for ribbing on the 2nd row you do the opposite. So row 1: (knit 1, purl 1) repeat, row 2: (purl 1, knit 1) repeat or row1: (knit 2, purl 2) repeat and row 2: (purl 2, knit 2) repeat etc... depending on ribbing pattern. Hope this help. Just take your time. You will get it and improve as you practice😊👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing your struggles!! I’ve been crocheting for most of my life and I finally started learning how to knit a couple months ago and it is SO HARD for me. I’ve only successfully picked up stitches once after having to frog some rows because of mistakes. I’m in the process of making a waffle stitch scarf just to get used to pearling and knitting and how it’s supposed to look. I hope to see more of your knitting projects in the future! 💕
Learn about tinking so you don't have to rip all the way back. And also life lines. It will save you time when you don't want to rip back to begin. All I can say is just keep going and use this as a practice. Don't get mad and just keep going. That way when you do another sweater or project you know how to read knit and purl stitch. Just keep going Anna because for many first project is a trouble shot. More you do it the more even you get, more comfortable you get and learn to read your stitches etc. Just keep going and learn instead of worrying it is not going to work. It will look like decorative stitches so keep going and power through you will get it before you know it.

Attempted same cardigan used too big a hook so my back piece is now the bottom half of the entire sweater cropped cornflower blue and I think I'm gonna embroider flowers on it
before i started crocheting i tried knitting with old needles from my grandma. I just couldn’t figure it out lol. I tried soo much with youtube tutorials etc. Then i can across a crochet tutorial, ran to the store to get some hooks and have been crocheting a bunch of things since. 🧶
as a knitter and a crocheter, I find it much quicker and sometimes even easier to crochet, but I love how knitted sweaters look, and I prefer them to crocheted sweaters, so normally for bigger projects I stick to knitting, but if im making tote bags, bucket hats, bralettes, things like that- I like to crochet
I have a little tip that I learnt this year. If you drop a stitch or make a mistake with a stitch (purl when you're meant to knit) you can actually use a crochet hook to fix that stitch. check out some videos on how to do that, this trick has helped me a lot!
Frogging will be worth it in the end! 🐸I love knitting, but it can be tricky. Keep going! The ribbing is usually done in the smaller needles.Everyone makes mistakes-keep going!!

I bought the same designer's tulip sweater as my first knit project last week only to realize i did really not have enough yarn and all our shops are still closed due to covid. so this entire video just made me side eye the 1/3 finished sleeve i have still on the needles on my desk. It looks GREAAAT especially for a first knit!! you went big for your first projet (which is really cool) but I think that maybe you should try knitting a smaller garment just so you adjust yourself to the technics?? my first few knits were bralettes, I used the "my secret little crop top" and "summer crop top" by Jessie Mae and the "basic bralette" by Saraknitco, these pattern are super well written and really easy to understand, and reallyyyy quick to knit, I highly recommend them to get started on the whole knitting journey!!

I'd probably have started with something a little less complex. don't get me wrong, its not a bad pattern, it's just difficult to learn and retain so many new things/moves in one piece. you'll learn how to correct mistakes, pick up stitches, pick up stitches in the middle of a piece so you can unravel freely to that point (!!!), with time. (it's actually super helpful to just check out "how to fix knitting mistakes" while learning) which makes everything so much easier. I'd say counting and double checking is the way to succeed at knitting. you rly don't have to be "good" or fast or "know things by heart", if u just take it step by step and follow the instructions religiously. however, once you've learned the basics you can just toss the patterns if u want and just make ur own (like me👻). crochet is much more free-form but knitting is so...smooth? knowing both is *chef's kiss*

I can definitely relate to this my first knitted project was a vest and I didn't even make a gauge for it but good thing 'cause it was just a bit bigger to me so I can still use it. Get a pattern that works in the round so that you wouldn't get confused
damn I've been so bummed with how my projects are going lately. I'm still a beginner i only started knitting back in october so some projects are a bit cat and I have such high standards for myself. When you said first projects may not come out the best, it really stuck with me. Something I've been needing to hear from another crafter x
knitting is like cantonese and crocheting is mandarin. one is harder than the other and takes more time to understand. both are hard, but one is just that much more complicated and has more nuances to make the turnout good.

Hi Anna! I recommend you look into lifelines in knitting. If you make a mistake you don’t have to rip out everything just to where the mistake happened :)
oh honey, you have to learn to undo the job without starting over, or you will have a nervous breakdown XD there are many tutorials that explain it here on youtube, but in short: if you pick up the right leg of all the stitches of the row below the one you want to correct with a free needle, when you undo it the thread will stop at that row. At that point you just have to check that all the stitches are there and that they are all turned in the right direction, and you can start working from there ^^

I made exactly the same mistakes on my first few knitting projects, two three times too less cast-on, misunderstanding knit and purl for ribbing. I had to redo everything several times, was soooooo frustrated. 😂

Since this was posted 7 months ago, you may have already picked up this skill - it's a LIFE SAVER when you realize a mistake was made several rows back. It's literally called a Lifeline. Thread a tapestry needle with dental floss and thread through each stitch on the row of or the row below your mistake. Make sure the floss is threaded through each stitch, and then you can remove your needles and frog safely. When you reach the row with the dental floss, re-thread your needles back through the stitches and voila!
Crocheting just makes so much more sense to me 😂

The best thing you can do is learn to read your knitting as well as learning to “tink” (or unknit) when you recognize a mistake in your current row (possibly the row or two below). I am working on a pretty complex lace tunic and through a lot of experience with knitting and all the increases and decreases, I am able to spot most things that go awry during a row/round. I’ve had to tink ssk’s, k3tog, p2tog tbl etc. multiple times during this project. I hope you continue with knitting!! You are so brave for tackling a seamed cardigan on your first knitting project! Good for you!
I by mistake bought a Harry Potter yarn kit thinking it was a crochet project... just to go home and read KNIT in the front. :( I've been putting it off cause Knitting looks so harddd. But I love watching all your vids. You're so pure!

I would recommend before starting a project is to make a swatch so you can check your tension/gauge. If the tension is too loose (less the number of stitches than the pattern recommends) then you would go down a needle size (or two) if it's too tight (higher number of stitches than the pattern recoomends) then go up a needle size until you can match the gauge on the pattern.

It's always interesting seeing people trying out knitting for the first time. I know a lot of people either knit or crochet, but as someone who does both, I would say that both can have their rough parts. It just takes a lot of practice. Sweaters are not the best thing for beginners because it's easy to get frustrated and want to give up, but I commend you for taking a stab at it. I would recommend starting with a garter stitch scarf, washcloth, or any small piece that's worked flat. Sweaters require a lot more techniques and it's better to start with the basics before getting into garments.

yay another knitting video!!! I'm so happy you're keeping on with knitting!! I was a little surprised that you decided to start with a sweater though, very ambitious!! I've been knitting for a little while now and even I haven't knit a sweater yet haha You should know that the frustrations (like finding out you're doing the ribbing wrong, didn't knit the right length, etc) is all part of the process of learning and I admire you're ability to keep perservering despite the difficulties!! I know well the frustration of getting to a point in your project where you realized you messed up and contemplate unweaving the whole thing -- it can be very discouraging!! But I think you're doing great and I'm proud of you for keeping at it!!! (also I noticed you're now knitting continental style which is usually easier for crocheters who are getting into knitting, idk if anyone suggested you knit continental bc of that, but I just thought that was interesting!! As a knitter, I've recently took up crochet and I found it really awkward at first figuring out how to hold my yarn after being so used to knitting English style haha... anyways, keep up the great work!!!
I was always a crocheter everyone called me a crochet queen but then i wanted to knit a pull over sweater and so i did it. I got the ribbing wrong so many times and frogged then started again and in the end it turned out so good. You will become confident enough to frog without taking the stitches off the needles.
You make knitting look so easy and crocheting I do both and it's really hard for me because I have small hands you did really good and the tension on it's perfect just keep practicing your knitting and it will get better I taught myself how to knit off of UA-cam I'm still teaching myself to crochet from UA-cam and your videos help

Around 8:00 ish mark... that is actually seed stitch! It’s very pretty and it’s actually the border in the cardigan I’m making rn! I’ve been knitting for years but this cardigan is my first ever attempted garment in knit. I think it was kinda cute in the end, maybe right around the armpits but I love a good cropped cardigan!
I have a few tips for you:
1. Did you gauge swatch? If you don’t know what this is I’m sure you can find a UA-cam video. Depending on your gauge the gauge swatch should show you about whether or not you need to size up/down in needles, change your stitch and/or row count, or maybe it will prove that your gauge is generally dead-on. Check the gauge swatch measurements that are in the pattern if the creator provided
2. Did you check into more than just the size name of the instructions? What I mean is different creators have different ideas of what is a small-medium-large etc. there should be a place in the pattern that gives you each sizes’ cm/inch measurements of the body + final measurements of the garment for that size. I learned the hard way in crochet and knit that sometimes I’m a medium and sometimes I’m a large, I just have to see what size the creator considers my body measurements to be
3. What style of knitting do you do? English is the way I learned but typically my gauge was too tight mostly and too loose in random places. Learning continental knitting helped me even my tension, knit faster, and make knitting easier. I didn’t have the confidence to make a garment until I learned that! Of course, some people are comfortable with traditional styles of knitting like English and that’s fine, you can totally learn how to do everything that way
Anyways I hope I didn’t confuse you, your first piece was actually pretty impressive. Love your usual content and I will also be looking forward to possible knitting in the future!
Good tip is to write things down before you start and during the project ( after to if you want ). Helps you keep track and random numbers like 34 wont pop into your brain 🤣☺️😁☺️
As a knitter who has known how to knit for a very long time but just attempted my first sweater this year, this is so commendable!! I’m also trying to teach myself crochet so this was fun to watch in vice versa. It’s definitely very hard to switch from one to the other!
I finished the sweater I was crocheting and am now working on a sunflower granny square blanket for summer. Good effort with the knitting! One of these days I'll try to learn it myself

I just started my own knit sweater I haven’t ver really knit anything before but my first crochet project was a blanket so... I guess I’m an over achiever. It’s going well so far I’m on the back panel which is the first panel I’m starting on and I just finished the ribbing last night. I’m in Kansas right now so hopefully I’ll be able to finish the back panel!

Ribbing was also really difficult for me in the beginning, I would recommend knitting in the round, then you don’t have to deal with purls, except for on the ribbing
You can always unravel it and start over. It is great you had the courage to teach yourself. You no doubt learned a bunch of good techniques. Regards

Yes when you start with purl after you started with the knit. Just to let you know what you did was the seed stitch. Pretty stitch but yes for ribbing on the 2nd row you do the opposite. So row 1: (knit 1, purl 1) repeat, row 2: (purl 1, knit 1) repeat or row1: (knit 2, purl 2) repeat and row 2: (purl 2, knit 2) repeat etc... depending on ribbing pattern. Hope this help. Just take your time. You will get it and improve as you practice😊👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing your struggles!! I’ve been crocheting for most of my life and I finally started learning how to knit a couple months ago and it is SO HARD for me. I’ve only successfully picked up stitches once after having to frog some rows because of mistakes. I’m in the process of making a waffle stitch scarf just to get used to pearling and knitting and how it’s supposed to look. I hope to see more of your knitting projects in the future! 💕

Learn about tinking so you don't have to rip all the way back. And also life lines. It will save you time when you don't want to rip back to begin. All I can say is just keep going and use this as a practice. Don't get mad and just keep going. That way when you do another sweater or project you know how to read knit and purl stitch. Just keep going Anna because for many first project is a trouble shot. More you do it the more even you get, more comfortable you get and learn to read your stitches etc. Just keep going and learn instead of worrying it is not going to work. It will look like decorative stitches so keep going and power through you will get it before you know it.

Attempted same cardigan used too big a hook so my back piece is now the bottom half of the entire sweater cropped cornflower blue and I think I'm gonna embroider flowers on it
before i started crocheting i tried knitting with old needles from my grandma. I just couldn’t figure it out lol. I tried soo much with youtube tutorials etc. Then i can across a crochet tutorial, ran to the store to get some hooks and have been crocheting a bunch of things since. 🧶

as a knitter and a crocheter, I find it much quicker and sometimes even easier to crochet, but I love how knitted sweaters look, and I prefer them to crocheted sweaters, so normally for bigger projects I stick to knitting, but if im making tote bags, bucket hats, bralettes, things like that- I like to crochet
I have a little tip that I learnt this year. If you drop a stitch or make a mistake with a stitch (purl when you're meant to knit) you can actually use a crochet hook to fix that stitch. check out some videos on how to do that, this trick has helped me a lot!

Frogging will be worth it in the end! 🐸I love knitting, but it can be tricky. Keep going! The ribbing is usually done in the smaller needles.Everyone makes mistakes-keep going!!

but I think that maybe you should try knitting a smaller garment just so you adjust yourself to the technics?? my first few knits were bralettes, I used the "my secret little crop top" and "summer crop top" by Jessie Mae and the "basic bralette" by Saraknitco, these pattern are super well written and really easy to understand, and reallyyyy quick to knit, I highly recommend them to get started on the whole knitting journey!!

I was looking for your crochet with me and stumbled upon this gem. Never been early before lol
I'd probably have started with something a little less complex. don't get me wrong, its not a bad pattern, it's just difficult to learn and retain so many new things/moves in one piece. you'll learn how to correct mistakes, pick up stitches, pick up stitches in the middle of a piece so you can unravel freely to that point (!!!), with time. (it's actually super helpful to just check out "how to fix knitting mistakes" while learning) which makes everything so much easier. I'd say counting and double checking is the way to succeed at knitting. you rly don't have to be "good" or fast or "know things by heart", if u just take it step by step and follow the instructions religiously. however, once you've learned the basics you can just toss the patterns if u want and just make ur own (like me👻). crochet is much more free-form but knitting is so...smooth? knowing both is *chef's kiss*

damn I've been so bummed with how my projects are going lately. I'm still a beginner i only started knitting back in october so some projects are a bit cat and I have such high standards for myself. When you said first projects may not come out the best, it really stuck with me. Something I've been needing to hear from another crafter x
knitting is like cantonese and crocheting is mandarin. one is harder than the other and takes more time to understand. both are hard, but one is just that much more complicated and has more nuances to make the turnout good.

Hi Anna! I recommend you look into lifelines in knitting. If you make a mistake you don’t have to rip out everything just to where the mistake happened :)
yess i’ve literally been waiting months for this moment
oh honey, you have to learn to undo the job without starting over, or you will have a nervous breakdown XD there are many tutorials that explain it here on youtube, but in short: if you pick up the right leg of all the stitches of the row below the one you want to correct with a free needle, when you undo it the thread will stop at that row. At that point you just have to check that all the stitches are there and that they are all turned in the right direction, and you can start working from there ^^

I made exactly the same mistakes on my first few knitting projects, two three times too less cast-on, misunderstanding knit and purl for ribbing. I had to redo everything several times, was soooooo frustrated. 😂
Wow are you doing the continental knit style already? I english knit and I tried to do the continental style knitting and I almost quit knitting altogether 😂🤣. I started out doing crochet but like yourself I also wanted to be able to knit for some more variety plus I just love the softness of a knitted fabric....I find crochet tends to be a bit more blocky , yes i made up that word 😊😁.

Since this was posted 7 months ago, you may have already picked up this skill - it's a LIFE SAVER when you realize a mistake was made several rows back.
It's literally called a Lifeline.
Thread a tapestry needle with dental floss and thread through each stitch on the row of or the row below your mistake. Make sure the floss is threaded through each stitch, and then you can remove your needles and frog safely. When you reach the row with the dental floss, re-thread your needles back through the stitches and voila!
