    Why shoot rabbits?
Rabbits are a major agricultural pest, costing the British economy an estimated £100million a year*. More than half of this figure is accounted for by damage to agricultural crops, with winter wheat, barley and oats being the most vulnerable. In terms of annual yield, a loss of 1% per rabbit per hectare (2.5 acres) has been recorded but overall yields can be reduced by up to 20%. Rabbits also graze on pasture, impacting on newly sewn areas, reducing available grass for livestock and the yield of crops cut for silage.
Wild rabbits burrow under roads, railways and through archaeological sites, causing subsidence and other damage to buildings.
They also contaminate the soil with their urine and droppings, so nothing but weeds can survive. In addition, rabbits chew through the bark of trees, killing nursery stock or young saplings and preventing the natural regeneration of woodland.
A Government survey in 1995 put the UK rabbit population at 37.5 million. This number is thought to have dramatically increased. Farmers and landowners now have a statutory responsibility to manage rabbit populations on their land, to prevent them causing damage to neighbouring properties.

This is a great video showing what an experienced shooter can do, it is a simple enough job to take them at these ranges with the right equipment. As for the controversy surrounding the neck shot, I have used a neck shots to take rabbits in positions where they do not present a head or heart shot and it is more than effective.Rabbits kick around like bug very when shot, it's a natural reaction of the nerves....some rabbits I have head shot have flicked themselves 10-15 feet from the place they were shot initially. The untrained or uninformed person will read that as being still alive, this is completely wrong.
If you are new to air gunning or hunting then you do not go out and try shooting things at random, you spend hours and hours on the range shooting 10pence pieces at ranges of 30 yds and more until you learn pellet drop and all the factors that effect your shot. Then you go out in the field and do the same thing until you're good enough.

Great marksmanship and a real eye opener to the capabilities of a sub 12ftp pcp air rifle if you work out ranges. Indeed after checking the kinetic energy on chairgun there is more than enough power to take a rabbits at that distance. I applaud you for pushing through the perception of what is regarded as normal hunting ranges for sub 12ftp rifles.

The PCP rifles were just coming into their own about 15 years ago when I quit hunting as I moved to Asia. Great times though and good to see this, as it's exactly the direction I was going. No rangefinder, just walking, counting steps and writing it down. My friends called me a nerd but I was the one bagging bunnies while they were polishing their spring rifles at home and talking a lot.

Shouldn't have done it but a few years back when I had just got my first pcp, I took a standing unsupported shot at a rabbit and paced it at 74 yards. Nailed it. Complete fluke and fully expected to miss not knowing how much hold over was needed. It was stood up and the pellet went way lower than expected, straight into the heart and lungs for an instant drop. Now I have a range finder, good scope and know my rifle I comfortably take these shots and it is even more satisfying than that first pot shot.

Thanks for the comments - interesting info about the remaining power at longer ranges, I hadn't done the calculations. I don't like shooting too close with a .177 as I find it goes straight through and doesn't transfer all the energy. Accurate rangefinding is key, and the laser gizmo makes all the difference for me as I can't guesstimate accurately enough.

Glad someone has addressed long range shooting with air rifles as its always controversial. I am not saying ping off at anything at 80 yards. Plot your trajectory with chairgun by entering every known value possible then cross reference by shooting paper targets using the information given by chairgun to check it for accuracy between when it tells you and what you experience in real life. Best used when you can rely on a good steady position and shooting known distances. Such as shooting to a bait station or feeder. Don't even think about it in the wind as in the field it too much to just guestimate. Might be 5mph where you are shooting from but 10mph where the target is and even 5mph can effect a pellet considerably at 80 yards. As always with air rifle shooting if in doubt get closer if at all possible.

This is an example of excellent shooting, all those criticising it only do so because of their own lack of skill. If you put the numbers into the chair gun app you'll see that a pellet from a 12ft lb rifle will retain enough kinetic energy to kill a rabbit (5ft Lb) up to 110-120 yards. Therefore, as long as the shooter can place his shot correctly which we have seen this bloke clearly can, then there is plenty of energy to humanely kill.

Using a sub-12fpe gun to shoot live quarry at these distances is just irresponsible. It's not about how much energy the pellet has... it's about how much energy the pellet can _transfer_ to the target. There's a reason most UK farmers/landowners use .22 rimfires (or centerfire) for rabbits at long range. If you want to shoot live quarry at those ranges, get an FAC and a suitable tool for the job. Nobody can argue that the shooter is accurate and highly skilled, but shooting at live quarry over 50 yards with sub-12 in .177? Get a clue.

I know it's too late, yet for anyone searching, here is what i learnt from my own researches :
.22 pellets delivers more punch, makes bigger holes, while falling sooner than .177. BUT ! That is math, and nothing more.
People that actually hunt small game with airguns < 15 fpe report no problem hunting with .177 and a noticeable quantity seem to prefer .177 for a number of reasons, like its reach.
What seems to come out as an explanation is that .22 is in the absolute still a small caliber with small impact and makes small holes. Its advantage in punch seems to be unsignificant as it doesn't eliminate the need to shoot at vital organs.
It has better punch, but its penetrating power is apparently no better than .177, and since precision is the main criteria, the ability to penetrate vital points is not as neglectable as it seems. I have seen a video where a rabbit was killed with a heart shot by a 14.7 fpe .177 air rifle. Even though it may be great luck and not a responsible shot, it shows that .177 propelled by a sufficiently powerful airgun is quite deadly.
I think that .177 is on par with .22 for small game hunting, .22 won't have actual "stopping power" and .177 won't allow for an easy clean kill at tremendous distances. They are both small calibers that make small holes and have neglectible kinetic impact. I'd rather have a .177 rifle but I think that it is not a vital question for small game hunting. People should just buy an accurate and as powerful as possible rifle, and decent pellets.

    • @ToreDL87
      @ToreDL87 3 роки тому +1

.177 slug guns cost a lot to build.
For .177 slugs you need a beefier receiver in order to machine large enough ports for all the air needed to move the slugs at 1050+fps (which is the muzzle velocity .177 slugs need to be stable in flight).
Try porting out the gun in this video and there'll be so little material left in the receiver it'll pretty much explode into fragments on the first shot.
In addition you need a much longer barrel, to the point that even just the shooters heartbeat might throw an otherwise "simple" 80 yard shot.
Even then, great, now you have your slug gun, it cost you 2k to build (unless you did it yourself = machinery costs more than 10 times that brand new), now you need slugs.
Slugs are insanely expensive, and that's IF they are available (people that watch all the slug videos get desperate), so now you have to make them too.
You get where this is going.
Yeah sure, the South Africans and Utah Airguns blast away .22 slugs like they were candy, but they OWN or have close sponsorship relations to the companies that makes the guns, scopes, bipods, rangefinders, slugs, the whole shebbang, and so, they can very well afford it 👍
Heck, their bipods cost more than ALL of the equipment this legend uses.
I'm not saying the other youtubers dont know how to shoot (most of them cut their bones on rifles like the one in this video), but you have to look at those videos for what they are: Marketing.

Cool shots, but I doubt the rifle is set at sub 12fpe because a pellet leaving the muzzle at 822fps and weighing approximately 8 grains will need to have a ballistic coefficient of at least 0.0600 to have the minimum required 5fpe for a humane kill head shot, unless the skulls of the isle are softer. I wish the video had stated the pellet type, weight and muzzle velocity. Numbers don't lie, but you can lie with numbers; although, I did see the rabbits did not suffer, too, much with the calculated 1fpe at 80 yards with an average round nose pellet, which gives the best B.C. number when fired from the muzzle at 12fpe, but cool video and I liked the sniper tape with the visual circumferences showing the ranges.

there's a lot wrong with this comment .. an 8.44 grain pellet (jsb exact's spec) with a bc of 0.027 (also jsb exact's spec) will have a 545.48fps leftover velocity at 80 yards, from a 790fps muzzle velocity. this equates to 5.58 fpe. I chose jsb exacts here as they are one of the most commonly used pellets.

Game over & out in the US air guns aren’t covered by any firearms laws. They’re popular for hunting within city limits (where you can’t use a firearm and because air guns aren’t one ....) so in effect you can walk into a shop and buy what you like.

Clean kill should always be no.1 priority.
It’s a hunters responsibility to place 10/10 shots inside a 1 inch circle practicing in hunting conditions.
I don’t find it clever to take long shots at live game even if the range is known, any small gust of wind will result in a wounded animal.A good hunter will use field craft to normally get to within 30 or so yards of a rabbit, maybe 40 in ideal conditions if the range is known and not much wind.A good hunter will have the self control and patience to not take risky shots.
    I’ve spoken my peace.

Mad shit talk In the comments. I’ve killed a few squirrel at 70-80 yards with my spring gun and a shot to the lungs. Pellet came to rest just under the opposite side rib cage. But also I live in America I can buy a .22 rifle for 1/3 as much money as a pcp air rifle and it will shoot accurately with good killing power out to 200 or more yards. even 30 ft lbs is weak, a 22lr generates like 88-108 depending on loading. But if it works it works, pellet slingers have worked for me you just have to make a very good shot.

I’m sure this post probably won’t get checked by your good self anymore.. but 10/10 if you can do it and you can then absolute fair play..
For anyone watching the man is up a height where the breeze is.. as his range falls to the rabbit’s they are more sheltered.. as another chap says! He did it..
And a .177 does have enough power to take humanly at that distance..
Mine to date is humanly at 58 yards..
But I will be pushing that out further..
It’s just time, plotting the trajectories and practice, along with reading the conditions.

4-5 ftlbs ish. not much but enough.
I used chairgun to work out the range my rifles no longer have lethal energy for a humane kill. Figures of between 5-3 ftlbs are often quoted is minimum on target energy for a clean kill.
My .177 (with aa field) drops bellow 5ftlbs at 65 yards and bellow 3ftlbs at 105y. My .22 (with aa field) drops bellow 5ftlbs at 100y and 3ftlbs at 160y. High ballistic coefficient going on there, both sub 12ftlbs.

I shot my friends Benjamin Nitro break barrel last weekend. .22 caliber\30ft\lbs. Shot a squirrel at 30 yards through the head, out the top of the skull, and through the feeder. Way too much power and heavy a pellet for such small game animals. I will stick with .177\20 ft\lbs guns for varmint hunting. Far more deformation and a total lack of over penetration like the Benjamin. Air rifles are deadly accurate all the way out to 60 yards or more. P.S. The .22 pellet had little deformation and wasted a lot of energy. Had to shoot the squirrel two more times in the head before he died. Not good.

People like you give this hobby a bad name. Those distances are well outside the capability of sub12 fpe air rifles. One twitch from the rabbit or a small gust of wind and the rabbit has a pellet lodged in it for the rest of its life. If you want to shoot at long distance then get an FAC air rifle, rimfire or HMR17 which are the correct tools for the job.

Absolutely not. This will encourage people to routinely attempt these shots and probably end up with air gun hunting being banned like in several other countries. The slightest mishit, even to the head will just wound with a low power air gun. And you will get mishits. Get a proper gun like a 17hmr for gods sake.

Damn British people narrate their hunts like they are snipers with the range and scope calibration. But being from Missouri it's good to know some people elsewhere practice ethical hunting because many people around here just shoot "to hit" the animal. Good shooting and I'm sure the rabbit was very good eating too.

    • @jacobcarolan1172
      @jacobcarolan1172 6 років тому +1

I would use a .22 long rifle but that may not be an option for him. As long as he can hit them in the head and get through the skull it will work. Most of the time I shoot a few while pheasant hunting with a 20 gauge. It only takes one good pellet from a 20 gauge to kill one.
