That is the best example of triplets i have seen u break it down to so its easy to follow and practice i cant believe how fast im getting them thank u so much keep the videos coming your a great teacher thanks again
It is my great pleasure. I was filming a new video yesterday and found myself smiling the whole time. I absolutely love making these videos and sharing my knowledge of drumming.
I can confirm it takes time! Last summer I had no idea what I was listening to in a Bonham fill but now I can play the end Rock n' Roll with ease. This video is all you need.
Hi John from Scotland, just to let you know I really enjoy your videos. Ive been playing drums on and off for 40yrs and still going strong. Ive watched other videos but I tend to keep coming back to yourself LoL
Jason, It is nice to see you commenting on all my videos. I truly appreciate it and I ask that you share my material with your friends. All the best, John X
John, I've been checking most of the drumming teachers on UA-cam. You're easily the best. You break it down perfectly. You're also a great and versatile drummer. The 'one te-ta two te-ta...' etc '3 even notes' is at the core of good triplets and you say don't try to go too fast until you've mastered a slow steady and consistent beat. It's like you're there in person teaching me. Great stuff!
tx john, you are making it easy for me to be good. notwithstanding, it doesnt mean it's easy: its just your teaching style that brings these things down to my level. keep that teaching anointing going ....it works, thats the main thing. hasta la proximo, from peru!
Man you sound so smooth! Triplets are actually very easy and powerful, yet there's excercise needed to get them that tight. Keep up the good work and thanks for this lesson :)
One of my favorite triplet fills is keeping left hand on snare and pattern goes:R snare L snare (kick), R floor tom L snare (kick). Sounds and feels great when done fast!
Thanx a lot for sharing your knowledge, sir. Without knowing it, you gave me a serious help to understand and play that crazy triplettes you can hear in the end of "Song For The Deaf" of Queens Of The Stone Age. You're great!
Thank you for the positive comments. I've been teaching in the SF Bay Area since 1978. I'm glad you've enjoyed the videos, they have been fun to make and very well received.
Hi John, thanks for sharing this triplet fill. I already use it for quite a while now, but watching this video gives me news ideas to orchestrate them on the kit. Cheers, I wish you all the best
When you're taught by somebody who sucks, you probably don't end up leaning as much about the lesson because you don't care much..... I LEARNED SO MUCH! That kicked ass dude, you're hella good :)
Thanks, I love the DW's with the Aquarian Heads. The heads are Aquarian Clear Super 2's. Easy to get a fat punchy sound with them. I don't tune to a pitch. For this set I do like my bottom heads as bit lower than the top heads. When it comes to tuning the best advise I can give to to have a sound in mind before you start tuning, then keep p-laying around with the drums until you can get the sound in your head. Have fun.
Awesome Mr. X! You have inspired me to blow the dust off my kit and start practicing to become a real drummer ager being a garage band guy for 45 years..."time" to be a real drummer!!! Thanks!
You're welcome. It's OK, even for a 1st vid, it was good enough to learn how to get the foundations of the triplettes. Well, I've checked 'em out already and they're all quite interesting; Thanx!
Christine, I am happy to hear that my video lesson was helpful. Please check out my other lessons and share them with your friends. All the best, John X
I'm glad you like the lesson. This is actually the first one I ever made. The drums are the DW Collectors series. 22, 10, 12 and 16. Don't recall what snare I used. The key to developing the technique to play the triplets is to practice slow and focus on keeping them evenly spaced. If you continue to focus on playing them evenly before you know it the speed will come on it's own. Have fun. JohnX
Jerome, On this set I'm using Clear Super 2's on the toms, texture coated on the snare, Super Kick 1 one the bass drum batter side and the 4 3/4" ported head on the front side. On my jazz set I use all texture coated except for the bass drum where I'm using a texture coated Super kick 1.
Thanks ,good lesson...I've been practicing linear triplets and can get them pretty fast and even..but have had trouble getting them into a beat...this has helped a lot...thanks for opening a door...I'm off!!!
Steve, I've been working on my hand technique for the past 35 years. I've spent a lot of time with the push/pull technique as well as many of the rudiments, especially 5 and 7 stroke rolls. Work on your hand technique 5-6 days a week and you'll start to see a relaxed feel when playing patterns like the five/seven fiil.
Try taking it very slow using the R,L,Foot sticking and play it until it becomes muscle memory. Over time gradually increase the speed. Good luck with it, JohnX
Thank you for your comment. I've been teaching this method for learning this fill for years now. However, this is the first UA-cam video I ever made. The production value is a bit ruff around the edges, so I'm very happy to hear you found it helpful.
Your DW's sound amazing, Aquarians and tuning also superb. If you have any extra time, any tuning tips would be appreciated. Do you tune to a note? Bottom head ?'s interval down. Thanks. (I have been on here for years and these are the best lessons i have yet to come across).
For fun double your right hand on the snare with your left hand going around the toms then alternate with a double on your left etc...then double time...then drop out the kick........then double strokes with the kick on the 5th for a five stroke...endless variations...
Glad my video was helpful. Take a look at some of my other video and please share them with your friends. There is a jazz triplet fill lesson that you also might find helpful. Best wishes, JohnX
Thank you for your comment. This is the first drum lesson video I ever made. It's a bit ruff around the edges production wise, but the content is solid. Glad you dug it. Be sure to check out my other videos. Best wishes, JohnX
I've been using this lesson but it is coming slowly. Too fast, I get sloppy or my kick goes off time. Absolutely love the tuning of your kit. Which DW drums are you using?
John I have a question for you. I'm learning your five and seven drum fill. How long approx.did it take you to become proficient on a fill like that. You make everything look so easy and I work and work on your stuff, still doesn't sound anything like you....Thanks John, steve
Thank you for your comment. I glad to hear that my video has made it easier for you to learn how to play these triplets. Do me a big favor and share my videos with your friends. Thanks, JohnX

my biggest problem is trying to start the triplet with my right hand. i always start with my left, and it makes these triplets much harder to sound properly.
John, i'm using your lessons for many years now. This one is a real game changer!
Thank you. I am happy to hear my lessons are helpful and this one is a game changer.
All the best,
John X

I love the technique. I am learning and this will be included my daily practice routine now.
You are the man, plain and simple!
This was a little better than the Steve Fisher V-drums video, What a great teacher.
One of my favorite triplet fills is keeping left hand on snare and pattern goes:R snare L snare (kick), R floor tom L snare (kick). Sounds and feels great when done fast!
So far this was the best way of explaining the triplet
Thanks for the lesson . awesome job .

ugggh, this is what i'm looking for! thanks!
Jerome,
On this set I'm using Clear Super 2's on the toms, texture coated on the snare, Super Kick 1 one the bass drum batter side and the 4 3/4" ported head on the front side. On my jazz set I use all texture coated except for the bass drum where I'm using a texture coated Super kick 1.
You are very welcome. It's a pretty simple fill when you can break it down into bite size portions.
Thanks ,good lesson...I've been practicing linear triplets and can get them pretty fast and even..but have had trouble getting them into a beat...this has helped a lot...thanks for opening a door...I'm off!!!

i love the way your toms are tuned. they sound like a helicopter
I've been using this lesson but it is coming slowly. Too fast, I get sloppy or my kick goes off time. Absolutely love the tuning of your kit. Which DW drums are you using?
It sounds better if you lead with your left hand but that's just me. Snare-floor-kick
Thank you so much John for the really usefull lesson!
What the songs John Bonham used triplets in most like Moby Dick?
Listen to Dazed and Confused starting at 4:56
Start slow, get everything in sync then gradually increase your speed. Don't sacrafice a smooth even feel for speed.
Which Aquarian tom heads do you use?
Do you think if i practise just the R-Foot it will become more smooth
John I have a question for you. I'm learning your five and seven drum fill. How long approx.did it take you to become proficient on a fill like that. You make everything look so easy and I work and work on your stuff, still doesn't sound anything like you....Thanks John, steve
