    Always a pleasure watching Mr. Xepoleas teaching and playing. I have a question: would you do a series about jazz fills with brushes? I've seen a lot of drummers playing fills with brushes just on the snare drum and the colors and sound they get out of that drum are incredible. The other thing is that there are times when brushes can't "substitute" at all the sticks and trying to play a fill with brushes that you play with sticks in those situations just doesn't work... Keep inspiring us Mr. Xepoleas! :)

    It's interesting the way a mind works. I was trying this exercise out and doing fine until the ride and snare together part (I'm a long ago decent drummer who is taking it up again in the later part of my life). Then I was just absolutely not getting it. Until I decided to score the beat out on paper. Then bingo, I saw the pattern and was able to do it perfectly. Crazy.

    great lesson just a minor detail. when you are alternating between bass and snare you are not playing the hi hat, sorry im a stickler for detail. adds a dimension of independence

    • @JohnXDrumLessons
      @JohnXDrumLessons  9 років тому

      I'm glad you like the lesson. I always played this with the hi-hat for the sake of independence, but when I recorded with the hi-hat part it didn't groove as well is it did without the hi-hat. I later had a conversation about this with jazz drumming legend, Colin Bailey. His response was, "It's all about how things feel when you are playing in a band. Nobody really cares if you are playing the hi-hat or not". So there you have it.
      Best wishes,
