Most things have been dumbed down, even for Steve. It is true you have to change your mindset from the Tekken 7 style, but it doesn’t require much learning, just reconditioning. Then, I just want to say, these top tier characters don’t even have to learn Tekken in general, so it’s somewhat a fair complaint lol.
cycling decisions on block has always been a thing even in tekken 7, stuff like weaving after b1 is blocked at -1 was common for steve mains, the main complaint about Steve is that he lost his identity because he's constantly forced to commit to options that are less safe traditionally, and offer less reward than other character's options. Steve might read ducks with a sonic fang and be punishable, but you have so many other characters that can read ducks the same way with a launching df2 or hopkick for example
Cycling decisions on-hit and on-block was way less good in Tekken 7. Returning to neutral was almost always stronger for Steve imo, it's why the best consistent tournament players were, well, so consistent. Heera was probably the exception to this style, among the popular high-level Steve players
Unsurprisingly Steve is fine. The problem being the Steve players makes sense. If you can beat one of the best people to ever play the game with a "weak character", then the character isn't weak.
Yeah Steve doesn't need buffs, he is already one of the most frustrating opponents to fight with. One of the biggest movelist, yet almost all moves look the exact same. I think there is no other character I hate more. 😅 Hope his pick rate won't go up too much... at least I didn't had to fight him often up until now. He and bears get no rematches. 😅
Damn. I have gotta be on to something. My Steve is suspiciously similar to Numan in terms of playstyle. Just like a lot less clean. Definitely a big boost to my confidence.
All they need to do is let all of the transitions into LH let us cancel them or implement a way for us to go into peekaboo stance since they dont want us to have a laucher, let us be a mixup character and that's pretty much it in my opinion
I agree, I mastered the 1 frame tech from LH into PKB for nothing since their removing it so it remove the mixup options, especially since the opponent still just decides between a 31 damage poke from the guardbreak, or to duck and give me a chance to launch or get heat, which leads to a pretty obvious choice unless they're very defensive and get caught in LH mix alot
Before watching this video, i definitely think the main thing he needs to have lion stance be a real 50/50, instead of being to break free from it with armor move. Other than that, maybe more consistent combos. Another buff is that steve's b1 doesn't hit victor at round start distance but hit everyone else properly
I get the feeling next patch will be over-buffing and over-nerfing all over the place. Stuff that's really not THAT bad will get touched too much basically.
@@beastant12itachi8 Over-nerfing will happen with King and characters who really don't need to be touched. Over-buffing will make certain characters OP. That's your example, they literally said in the patch notes they'll address characters who they didn't touch last time.
Even the best of us fall to the mental stack, it’s healthy imo that even the top guys are needing to adjust to this new game and letting other players shine, should be an interesting 5-10 years.
How to play steve like Numan. Enter ultrainstinct. Predict all your opponents low parry hits. Im sure any beginner can do it based on hard work and determination. Thats sarcasm BTW. Steve is inaccessible for beginners and intermediate players. Only used by legacy players.
Like i'm rewatching this video and i feel like this kind of playstyle would be so much more well facilitated with a character like feng or lee, it's very much not steve's strengths that makes numan win this
One thing people seem to fail to understand or realise, is that Steve's Movelist is one of the most potent Long Set Toolbags in the entire game. He doesn't spam Normal Hit Launchers, but his Stances are all good. Many characters in Tekken have Stances where either the Stance itself is very difficult to get into vs good Players, or only have one or two good options so it skews the risk/reward game. Steve's Albatross, Flicker, Peekaboo, Sway Left, Sway Right, Back Sway, and Duck-In all have more than one good option attached to them that you can use in a real Match. Steve's Stances aren't highlight reel Stances where it's hype because they used a Move that's garbage to win, they're all good, and actually very usable in a Match. His Mental Stack is real because Steve has over 100 Moves that he can use. So even if it's very difficult to win with simple tools, it also means that conversely, creative Players that also happen to have excellent Fundamentals can literally present more problems to deal with than almost any other character.
feel like the main problem is he has good options but he doesn't get much reward off of a good amount of them, for example I wanted to test Steve's damage output with my friends who was playing Alisa at the time, I did my LH combo which is 71 damage, he did 2 chainsaw pokes and it did about 68. The range on so many of his moves end up being a problem a good amount of the time, especially on his heat smash, which is why they're changing it. Almost every if not every character has over 100 moves so I don't understand that point, but I do agree that using Steve creatively will get you far but the opportunities end up being dampened with how glitchy he is, there are many times me and my friends just sit there and laugh at the times I would've won a match if moves didn't randomly whiff and make me negative or have steve just get forced out of blocking in peekaboo, If Steve worked as intended without all the bugs i'd 100% agree with you.
@@litfrvr1552 Steve's movelist is all about stance transitions. Unlike other characters with stances that can be used in any situation, Steve's stances each have a specific purpose and are crucial for controlling the match flow. The match typically starts with a poke game to test the opponent. From there, you build a plan based on whether to pressure or play defensively. Based on that, you have the option to go from a defensive (Flicker, Sway, Duck) or offensive (Peekabo, LionHeart) stance. Learning Steve's movelist is essential. Each move has a specific purpose and timing, providing a pool of options to adapt to situations. Unlike characters with generic tools, Steve relies on his entire kit, fundamental game understanding, and matchup knowledge to succeed.
I like Speedkicks's take. When a new game comes out it takes a lot longer to figure out how to defend than how to attack. Steve is about breaking down defense. He's "weak" right now because he doesn't have much to break down. As people get better, Steve will get better, even if he remained completely untouched. I'm paraphrasing from memory but I think that was the gist of it. Hopefully they don't overbuff him.
I would agree with this just on the basis that my matches against better players are legitimately 10x less stressful than matches down in the jungle of reds and purple were. The game is overall more enjoyable in blues cause it feels like everyone’s grinding out matchup knowledge instead of going for whatever wins the quickest
yeah spinning down 2- seemed like a lot of players at the end of T7 could deal with it pretty easily by just reacting to it or low parrying it. Downback+2 similar problem, really reactable but I dunno, I guess I do know that the slower timing might throw off someone's low parry.
Steves i run into are either easy dubs or absolute nightmares. I think he is good but lacks a lot of tools that make him easily accessible. He is like a boxing variation of mishima.
Im a little torn, not being anywhere near the pro scene and dealing with him is really tough sometimes i dont like the idea, but if buffing him, and others helps that scene and by virtue helps Tekken get more attention and support, I can get behind it. As long of defensive options are viable and "good" for those of us who commit to learning how.
Honestly i feel he's completely fine after what he is about to get in 1.04. I just picked up a second character and it made me really see clearly how much i appreciate Steve's tools. He's still hard to play for sure, but he can definitely get it done
yes ofcourse. would be nice if lionheart had more than 3 rock paper scissor options. PAB and flicker got cool things, lotta options and grabs too. but oh well it is what it is, but let me say that steve is a boxer i think lionheart stance should be able to dodge just like Ali in real life was dodging punches (but no they gave that to azucena lol). ik they know this because lionheart in heat dodges mids so.... you know what im saying?
The fact that the best player in the world is getting hit by random rage arts shows me that it's not just us ranked players getting hit by it.😂it's so rage inducing for someone to just pop it every single round and win
I have been consuming your content like crack phi. Easily one of my favorite youtubers in such a small amount of time. I dont even have Tekken lol I play GGS! keep up the great vids and blessings to you and yours.
Steve is called a CH paragon but steve does not have the best ch tools in the game King has a i13 ch confirmable df12 thats better than steve b1, or even my boi lee has a magic 4 if your good you can confirm it. They can give steve his old df2 back that combos and that just fixes things a lot he dosent have a good low yes but his mids are more scary now and that enough.
They should buff his up back 3 lion heart stance so that he can do anyone of his options a little bit sooner during the animation of him back stepping. That way he can whiff punish attacks faster with lion heart 2 or since he doesn’t have any good lows he can use that lion heart guard break a lot more instead of having to do db3,2 first. Also buff damage on b1.
High level gameplay reviews are fun and all but I want to see more low - mid ranks replay reviews too. I think they are much more beneficial to newer and intermediate players who plateau.
I dont think Phi knows this but Numan Heera and a lot of top Pakistan Steve players have been excellent tekken players since tekken 5. Theyre not just the best at steve theyre also excellent at tekken..would they achieve better results with top tiers like dragunov feng and victor. Yes infact heera has shown this in T7 when steve got too much nerfed. Meanwhile the top tiers of this game are terrorized by law Dragunov victor lilly feng lars and a lot of characters who have low input high reward. If nothing else steve at least needs to live upto his legacy of "counter punch paragon" eventhough his punches are objectively weaker than feng lilly Dragunov law azucena interms of ch launchers. Steves current identity is a ch poker and stance whiffer which needs change. Tekken devs need to stop trying to make LH work. Arguably the worst stance steve ever got. Replace it with any stance peekaboo duck in sways. All his previous stances are objectively stronger than LH stance.
I genuinely just thought I was trash wanting lionhart to be a bit more defensive but now I realize I’m just trash regardless and I need to understand timing
Or *OR* you don’t understand timing, because your idiotic brain dead opponents only know how to execute one thing and one thing only: MASH MASH MASH MASH MASH SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM CRUSH CRUSH CRUSH CRUSH
I think you had a previous video on this but i think some players respect minus frames too much and then end up eating deadly mixups for it. Like its okay to mash when your opponent is taking too much of an advantage of plus frames by doing long moves.

cycling decisions on block has always been a thing even in tekken 7, stuff like weaving after b1 is blocked at -1 was common for steve mains, the main complaint about Steve is that he lost his identity because he's constantly forced to commit to options that are less safe traditionally, and offer less reward than other character's options.
@@PhiDX actually true i never even thought about that, Heera always felt very distinct in his playstyle
Bro spent 11 minutes getting me more excited to watch the video than when I clicked.
Unsurprisingly Steve is fine. The problem being the Steve players makes sense. If you can beat one of the best people to ever play the game with a "weak character", then the character isn't weak.
So when I throw random and unexpected attacks at people I get exploded but when Numan does it he wins tournaments. Yeah, very fair game.
yoshi needs buffs
Yeah Steve doesn't need buffs, he is already one of the most frustrating opponents to fight with. One of the biggest movelist, yet almost all moves look the exact same. I think there is no other character I hate more. 😅
Hope his pick rate won't go up too much... at least I didn't had to fight him often up until now. He and bears get no rematches. 😅
while this might be true standing block beats 80% of his move list 😂
Damn. I have gotta be on to something. My Steve is suspiciously similar to Numan in terms of playstyle. Just like a lot less clean. Definitely a big boost to my confidence.
Leroy needs ACTUAL BUFFS
Yeah leroy is bad
that's a really solid steve plays
OK like what can u give example
@@beastant12itachi8 Over-nerfing will happen with King and characters who really don't need to be touched. Over-buffing will make certain characters OP. That's your example, they literally said in the patch notes they'll address characters who they didn't touch last time.
@@FieryAnubis Can't wait to see the overbuff to Claudio by fixing one more obscure bug or some shit, surely
The fact that Phi puts so much effort into his content and is sub 100k is actually criminal.
This analysis was hype! Love it!
To compliment that, he compliments that with another complimentary compliment!
Buffs are one thing, but he has so many things that need to be fixed that this may be a multi-season process.
Even the best of us fall to the mental stack, it’s healthy imo that even the top guys are needing to adjust to this new game and letting other players shine, should be an interesting 5-10 years.
I feel like playing Steve is just conditioning the opponent and then pulling out the bag of tricks and random bs and hoping they fall for it
Numan is not only my favorite Steve player, he might be one of my favorite overall players to watch. He's just so good and so fun.
How to play steve like Numan. Enter ultrainstinct. Predict all your opponents low parry hits.
Im sure any beginner can do it based on hard work and determination. Thats sarcasm BTW. Steve is inaccessible for beginners and intermediate players. Only used by legacy players.
Like i'm rewatching this video and i feel like this kind of playstyle would be so much more well facilitated with a character like feng or lee, it's very much not steve's strengths that makes numan win this
Bro, you might want to consider commentating. Your excitement during T8 matches is infectious.
Haven’t watched the video and all I can say, with a tone of frustration, is.. “OVER HERE!”
LMAO...Steve players gotta normalize WWND "What would Numan Do?"
But why is everyone mashing? They are absolute pros but it looks like intermediate masher…
That’s just Tekken 8 man
Sad
I see this as a video for why Steve needs buffs.
The game is overall more enjoyable in blues cause it feels like everyone’s grinding out matchup knowledge instead of going for whatever wins the quickest
awesome content Phi, thx!
I think he will be a in a good place;. Steve mains just deep in their feels about the way he 'should' be.
Something something algorithm. Nice breakdown
One thing I hate about the community is that people win one match against you, then leave. Smh weak sauce why are players so scared of the run back
bro's RA timing is way more better than Low High ☠
yeah spinning down 2- seemed like a lot of players at the end of T7 could deal with it pretty easily by just reacting to it or low parrying it. Downback+2 similar problem, really reactable but I dunno, I guess I do know that the slower timing might throw off someone's low parry.
Those grab breaks were crazy
I'd say he probably because his counter hit game is somewhat lacking, especially his B+1 which needs buffed frames and damage along with DF+2 and B+2
glad you covered it
Yo Phi you should announce on the side. This is pretty much announcing I support, but this just adds so much to the game.
STEEEEVEEE!!!! I'm a scrub player but i still come back and play some Steve. This was nice to see
This man is playing Tekken 8 while everyone else is trying to catch up
If you are threatening everything , you can do anything you want
Steves i run into are either easy dubs or absolute nightmares. I think he is good but lacks a lot of tools that make him easily accessible. He is like a boxing variation of mishima.
Im a little torn, not being anywhere near the pro scene and dealing with him is really tough sometimes i dont like the idea, but if buffing him, and others helps that scene and by virtue helps Tekken get more attention and support, I can get behind it. As long of defensive options are viable and "good" for those of us who commit to learning how.
He needs buffs off course
Yes he does especially in this tekken.
Honestly i feel he's completely fine after what he is about to get in 1.04. I just picked up a second character and it made me really see clearly how much i appreciate Steve's tools. He's still hard to play for sure, but he can definitely get it done
Love this format dude :D
yes ofcourse. would be nice if lionheart had more than 3 rock paper scissor options. PAB and flicker got cool things, lotta options and grabs too. but oh well it is what it is, but let me say that
steve is a boxer i think lionheart stance should be able to dodge just like Ali in real life was dodging punches (but no they gave that to azucena lol).
ik they know this because lionheart in heat dodges mids so.... you know what im saying?
they got rid of dempsey roll too that was a fun move lol
I find it baffling that a boxer lacks power on a counter hit hook, and lacks a fast+safe high-mid in his tool kit.
Or if he just had a lionheart 14 frame grab that would fix everything.
The fact that the best player in the world is getting hit by random rage arts shows me that it's not just us ranked players getting hit by it.😂it's so rage inducing for someone to just pop it every single round and win
body, sh*t, fire!
Would make more sense to leave the options alone and let him cancel outfox into duck sooner than his other options so duck, 2 is available sooner.
All his previous stances are objectively stronger than LH stance.
basically Numan plays Battle Ruler Steve with GoD knowledge of the game
I can feel the fear in the balancing team tryna not make steve an absolute monster and hesitating to give him buffs
That was sick, thanks
I do love these longer ones
I think you had a previous video on this but i think some players respect minus frames too much and then end up eating deadly mixups for it. Like its okay to mash when your opponent is taking too much of an advantage of plus frames by doing long moves.
Im not gonna lie... his style of steve wasnt anything new to me. I feel like i play a similar Steve. This is my 1st time playing Tekken, and i main Steve. Not sure what the correct form of how to play him.. so i just do what i can lol. I do think Steve needs a major buff though. Its so easy to play against him.
why you anever talked about Paul ?
Steve supremacy. Steve always needs buffs when he doesn't need buffs :)
Talk nerdy to me! I'm here for it.
I have fought this really good Steve player that I don't even won a round not just that I felt like my King is hopeless against him. I'm dumbfounded.
This is how I try to play, and how I used to start matches in T7. Good. I'll keep this up with my own mediocre playing, lol.
EDIT: You just gave me an idea - thanks for discussing this pro's style.
